DIGI Citizen
What is a digital citizen? After all, we all deal with digitization on a daily basis, sometimes even hourly. Phones and apps, work tasks and devices, applications, visions and hearings. Digitalization is a great opportunity for citizens when its use is everyday.
Kela
Personally, and my family doesn’t have much use for Kela’s services either. Child allowance is a benefit that still comes and the university’s health fee goes away. After a few years, our children will progress to vocational studies, and then we will apply for study social benefits for them.
I just applied for a European health care card, and we are also applying for the other family members. Below is information collected from the website of Kela.
European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can bring several benefits. Here are a few explanations of these benefits, based on information from the official website of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela).
- Accessing healthcare abroad: The European Health Insurance Card allows you to receive healthcare in Europe when you are traveling. You can use the card in the same way as residents of the country you are visiting. By presenting the card, the healthcare provider can verify the type of treatment you are entitled to.
- Treatment free of charge or at a reduced cost: With the European Health Insurance Card, you may receive healthcare services free of charge or at a reduced cost. However, there may be a deductible for the treatment, which is usually lower when you use the card.
- Emergency care: The European Health Insurance Card ensures access to emergency care when you are abroad. The card helps you receive the necessary treatment quickly and with minimal costs.
- Easy to use: Using the European Health Insurance Card is straightforward. You simply need to present the card to the doctor or hospital, and they will take care of the rest. The card contains all the necessary information, so you don’t need to remember or explain anything.
It is important to note that the European Health Insurance Card does not cover all healthcare costs. Therefore, it is still advisable to have travel insurance that provides broader coverage for healthcare-related situations. Additionally, the card does not cover the costs of non-essential or non-urgent treatments.
Overall, the European Health Insurance Card facilitates access to healthcare while traveling in Europe. It provides peace of mind, knowing that you can receive necessary treatment if the need arises.

Omakanta- service
I logged in to the Omakanta service through strong authentication. Ensuring the utmost security, accessing the Omakanta -service requires strong authentication through the Finnish identification service (suomi.fi). This method offers the highest level of safety, particularly when dealing with personal health information.
Keva
I was able to check my pension on the spring website, where you also log in with a strong identification. It was easy to check the accrual of my pension, and by adjusting the salary figure, you could also see what a good salary level could be considering the target pension.
I have been shopping online on several different sites. I have found the products and services to be purchased easily and the payment is convenient. My favorite shopping places are zalando.com, nike.com, BonPrix.fi, Verkkokauppa.com, newera.com and booking.com.
I have received enough information and the customer service in problem situations works well.
A digital service in my professional field
Open Educational Resources (AOE): Supporting Teacher Creativity and Creating High-Quality Teaching Materials
Introduction:
In the era of digitalization, teachers have increasingly more opportunities to leverage open educational resources in their teaching. As digital service manager, i assist teachers in producing teaching materials by providing them with resources and tools to utilize open educational resources.
Why should you use open educational resources?
- Doesn’t cost much: Open educational resources (OER) are free.
- Easy to get: Open educational resources are online, so you can easily access them anytime. You can use them on your own computer or phone if you have an internet connection.
- Updated information: Open educational resources are often updated to include the latest knowledge and research. This way, teachers can use up-to-date information in their teaching and help students learn new things.
- Customization for your needs: You can modify open educational resources to fit your own needs. Teachers can make materials that align with their teaching goals and students’ needs. Everyone learns differently, so it’s good to be able to adapt materials to different learning styles.
- Collaboration and sharing: Open educational resources encourage teachers to share knowledge and collaborate. You can learn from other teachers and share your own good ideas. This way, teachers can help each other improve and make better education.
I have personally benefited a lot from open educational resources. They have helped me develop my teaching and provided new ideas. It’s great that these resources are available and that teachers can share information with each other.
As a digital service manager, I have leveraged the library of open learning materials to assist teachers in creating their teaching materials. Additionally, I have actively contributed to the production of materials for this library. Furthermore, our organization’s online learning platform encompasses its own repository of learning materials, allowing us to share resources not only with our colleagues but also with the broader educational community.
In my role, I have witnessed the tremendous value of open learning materials. By utilizing this library, teachers have access to a wide range of resources that can enhance their instructional content and engage students effectively. The collaborative nature of the platform encourages knowledge-sharing among educators, fostering a vibrant community of practice.
Moreover, the online learning environment provided by our organization serves as a hub for sharing and disseminating valuable educational resources. Teachers can contribute their own materials, making them accessible to their peers within the organization. Simultaneously, the wider educational community can benefit from this repository, gaining access to a diverse array of high-quality resources.
In conclusion, as a digital service manager, I have witnessed the transformative power of open learning materials in supporting teachers and enhancing the educational landscape. The library of open learning materials, coupled with our organization’s online learning environment, provides a robust platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the creation of impactful teaching resources. By harnessing these resources, educators can elevate their teaching practices, enrich the learning experience of students, and contribute to the broader educational community.
Digitalization and the widespread use of virtual services have brought many benefits and opportunities, but they have also posed risks and challenges for those who do not use these services.
- Exclusion from essential services: Many essential services, such as online banking, public services, healthcare portals, and educational materials, have transitioned to digital platforms. People who do not use virtual services may miss out on access to these vital services, which can hinder their ability to perform daily tasks, obtain information, and fully participate in society.
- Limited access to information and skills: The internet is a vast source of knowledge and skills. Individuals who do not engage in virtual services may miss out on important updates, news, educational materials, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. This can lead to a knowledge gap and make it difficult for them to stay updated and learn new skills.
- Social and economic disadvantages: The digital divide can deepen existing social and economic inequalities. People who do not use virtual services may face barriers in finding employment, accessing job opportunities, participating in online shopping, and engaging in digital communication. This can limit their ability to connect with others, pursue economic opportunities, and improve overall well-being.
- Cybersecurity and privacy concerns: Individuals who are not familiar with virtual services may be more vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, scams, and privacy breaches. Lack of knowledge and experience on digital platforms can make them easier targets for identity theft, fraud, and other harmful activities.
- Dependency on others: People who do not use virtual services may increasingly rely on others for tasks that have become digitally dependent. This dependency on others can limit their independence and autonomy, making them more susceptible to exploitation or manipulation.
It is important to recognize that while digital services offer countless benefits, there should also be alternative channels for those who are unable or unwilling to use virtual services, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital transformation.
In conclusion
The tasks were really interesting to do. The transition to national and commercial digital services was really good to go through from the point of view of my studies. Even though the services are used almost every day, some were completely new to me – for example, I haven’t thought much about pension savings yet, but now I have set a salary level goal for myself for the future.
The digital competence wheel was a bit simple, a lot of questions, a few of which I was left to think about, but otherwise it went quite smoothly. I did not apply for a competence mark on the subject.
I commented three bolgs: Taija´s site, Titta´s site and Laura´s site.

Kaisu discusses her interactions with online businesses, the European Health Insurance Card, Omakanta, Kela, and other digital services in Finland in this blog. She highlights the advantages of these services, like convenient internet shopping and simple access to healthcare while abroad. As a manager of a digital service, Kaisu underlines the importance of OER in assisting instructors and promoting collaboration. The blog also covers the dangers and difficulties experienced by those who do not use virtual services, such as potential exclusion from basic services and privacy and cybersecurity issues. Despite feeling that the digital competence wheel should have been more thorough, Kaisu considered the assignments to be worthwhile and fascinating, which inspired them to set new goals.

Hey Kaisu,
nice to read your thoughts. You told about the Open Educational Resources for teachers and what are its benefits. When I started studying as an adult these online learning platforms like Moodle was totally new for me. Fortunately we have these digital platforms because otherwise for example distance learning could not be possible and I could not complete these studies. Open Educational Resources are really challenging us to learn new things and as you told it is a good way for teachers to collaborate and share ideas too.
