Week 2

I worked in the in-patient female wards and the most common mental disorders are: schizophrenia and manic disorders. I observed that the most common symptoms of schizophrenia includes; hallucinations, delusions, hearing of voices and seeing imaginary things. I was able to safely administered prescribed oral medications, the common drugs we use in my unit are Risperidone and Olazenpine and also I was able to document and create nursing care plan for the patients.

Apart from pharmacological therapy, occupational therapy is also used in my unit where patients’ time are pre-occupied with different activities such as basket weaving, crotchet, knitting and so on, one of the things I like about this program is that the patients are allowed to sell their products and make profits thereby enhancing their productivity and giving them a sense of responsibility. I was involved in the coordination and evaluation of activities for the occupational therapy sessions. I also ensured patients’ personal care and hygiene are well taken care of. Feeding was done in a general dinning hall and I ensured patients were fed in order to ensure their nutritional requirements are met.
