Final Evaluation

The past five weeks of my internship have been both enlightening and informative at the same time. I have encountered a lot of scenarios and challenges that has made me a better person and a nurse in the making and I hope to improve on what I have learnt in order to become an excellent nurse.

ETHICAL COMPETENCE

I ensured I got familiar with and followed the guidelines and protocols of my training unit in order to have a safe work environment. Also my nursing practice was guided by the principles and ethics that guides the nursing profession, that is autonomy, beneficence, justice, non-maleficence. The patients rights were respected and their privacy and confidentiality were ensured. I ensured I act professionally at all times around my patients and colleagues.

EDUCATION AND TEACHING COMPETENCE

I was actively involved in the guidance and education of patients through the encouragement of my mentor. The usage and side effects of drugs were explained to patients and I counselled patients on the disadvantages or drug and alcohol abuse.

WORKING COMMUNITY COMPETENCE

Interestingly, mental health care involves so many professionals in the multidisciplinary team, I was able to navigate this with the help of my mentor nurse. In the rounds, it requires the presence of the occupational therapists, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and so on. I was able to give suggestions that are backed by research in order to improve the lives of the patients. I also attended seminar on latest best practices in drug detoxification held for all nurses.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE AND DECISION-MAKING COMPETENCE

In discharging my nursing duties, I ensured I am up to date with the latest best practices and also that they are evidence based. I was able to seek for these information through various academic search portals such as terveysportti, BNF to support my evidence based nursing and to make nursing decision. I will continue to seek information from reliable portals so as to improve on my practice.

CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Patients’ personal belief belief was respected and not interfered with while discharging my nursing duties. I also was open to to learn more about different belief system which made my internship quite successful.

CLINICAL NURSING COMPETENCE

I was able to guide patients and family members to resources needed for their health journey thereby being able to work on my interpersonal relationship. I made nursing care plan focused on the nutritional and hygiene needs of patient. I administered prescribed medication safely by ensuring all the right of medication administration were followed. I was also involved in the planning and evaluating of activities for occupational therapy. I also was able to practice my documentation skills more due to the fact that there was no language barrier.

For my assignment, I planned and implemented occupational therapy activities for 5 patients in rehabilitative care who consented to it and positive feedback was given at the end of the session.

  1. Thank you Damilola for your final evaluation text. In your text, you have carefully described the different aspects of nursing and how you have learned. You have had a versatile and educational internship. You have learned a lot about mental health and substance abuse treatment and your knowledge has deepened. Your mentor nurse has also given you good feedback about the internship period. This is a good way to move forward towards new challenges. I wish you nice autumn and all the best for your future studies! See you again on campus 🙂
