Kangaroo Mother Care

Kangaroo Mother Care is a care of preterm infants carried skin-to-skin with the mother or a surrogate who can be relatives or healthcare workers.

AIM

My aim for this kangaroo Mother Care for babies James who were born prematurely at 35weeks weighing 1.2kg and 1.3kg respectively is to:

-initiate early, continuous and prolonged skin-to-skin contact between the parents and the babies.

-To encourage bonding between the parents and the set of twin

-To facilitate their early discharge from the hospital.

-To ensure continuous care at home after discharge.

-To encourage breastfeeding.

INTERVENTION

-The parents were counselled and health educated about Kangaroo mother care.

-Their level of understanding about the care, that is the benefits and requirements, were assessed by asking for feedback.

-The Kangaroo Mother Care was initiated as soon as possible after counselling following the protocol of my training unit for 8 hours daily, that is 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening.

EVALUATION

The Kangaroo Mother Care was quite successful with the guidance of my mentor nurse as the the babies steadily gained weight and they were approaching the 1.6kg which is the standard practice for discharge of such babies in my training unit.

The KMC was not able to facilitate breastfeeding in this case due to the mother not lactating. She was counselled and advised to see the Doctor for proper evaluation and treatment.
