Mid Internship Summary and Evaluation

LEARNING SKILLS

My internship has been going on smoothly and accordingly because I was able to draw out a clear plan on how to achieve the goals of the internship with my mentor and on a daily and weekly basis, I reflect on my progress and how I can improve on my areas of weakness.

ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALITY

My nursing practice has been guided by the ethics governing the profession especially as regards to children and adolescents. I have ensured to respect and protect their privacy and keep information confidential.

WORKING SOCIETY COMPETENCE

I ensured I comply with the rules and instructions in my unit and I am always eager and willing to work in a team because that is an area I need to improve my competency on since the hospital is a multidisciplinary environment.

PATIENT-ORIENTED NURSING CARE

I have been able to involve the parents and family members in the care of the patients though I find this a little bit challenging because I mostly care for neonates which are often in incubator, but I also observed that with proper health education and counselling about various procedures and their benefits such as the Kangaroo mother care (KMC), they are willing to cooperate and the results are encouraging.

EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING

I have been consulting the notes from school, various educational and research portals such as terveysportti and the school library online and also asking my mentor questions in order to guide my nursing practice. I have also been able to practice my documentation skills which I was not able to do effectively in the previous internship due to the language barrier.

CLINICAL NURSING CARE

With the guidance of my mentor, I have been able to identify the basic needs of my patients and also plan and perform their nursing care. I do physical examination of neonates to check for parlor, dehydration, jaundice. I also check and record vital sign and ensure ergonomics while doing all these. I have not been involved in resuscitation of neonates as the two cases we had was not during my shift.

Another aspect of nursing care I find interesting is the fluid therapy because in neonates , intake and output are closely monitored. While in school, I was familiar with the infusion pump but in my unit, we use the manual method where we transfer the needed fluid into a marked cylindrical container called soluset, I have been able to adapt to its usage in order to ensure accuracy and prevent cardiac overload in the neonates.

I also ensure all my procedures are carried out aseptically.
