I worked in the neonatal intensive care unit which has been filled with various challenging, but nevertheless, surmountable situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was a case of a baby that needed to be fed through a nasogastric tube. My mentor asked if I would like to do the procedure of passing the nasogastric tube because during the orientation, I told her I would like to practice as many clinical procedures as possible in order to perfect my hand skills. In answering her question, I told her even though we have learnt it school, I would love to see her do it first so that I can see how it’s done in real life situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After taking the tools we needed for the procedure together and seeing her perform the procedure, this really encouraged me that with her guidance, I will be able to do the next one, and so, when another opportunity arose, I was able to pass the nasogastric tube and feed the baby successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think what helped me in this procedure was that first of all, we have an extensive curriculum in school that has prepared us for various scenarios and procedures in the hospital and my mentor was able to work with the kind of learner that I am because I like to first see an example being done. Also, I would like to say seeing her do it boosted my own confidence and I was ready to learn, because neonates are very tiny babies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know I need more practice in order to perfect my hand skills and I have been doing that at every given opportunity, thus, achieving the goal of this internship of performing the most common nursing care of children and adolescents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
