LEARNING COMPETENCE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was involved in the planning of my work schedule during my internship which made learning easier and more flexible for me to be able to achieve my goals. From the start of the internship, I informed my mentors the procedures I will like to learn and practice and my method of learning, which is to first observe and then practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also, at the end of every procedure, I ask my mentor nurse for feedback, sometimes, I was given feedback without asking which made me get better at the next opportunity, for instance, after an antibiotic infusion ended, I stopped it and started the next infusion without my mentor’s supervision. On coming back, she let me realize that she has to present at such procedures which I heeded to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I ensured I work as ethically as possible by maintaining the privacy of my patients at all times. Patients were also treated with respect and dignity. I reported directly to my mentor nurse when I made I made an error in dispensing a medication which prevented the administration of such medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CLINICAL COMPETENCE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During my internship, I was able to assess the care need of patient by using the ABCDE and NEWS approach and act accordingly. For instance, a patient who suddenly developed breathing difficulties, using the ABCDE, my mentor and I were able put the patient in cardiac position in order to make the airway more patent, oxygen therapy was also started immediately at 5l\/min to improve breathing and oxygen saturation while the oximeter was placed on her finger to continually monitor her oxygen saturation level, taking her circulation into consideration, her blood pressure was also checked and monitored. through out the ordeal, she was spoken to to ensure response. The ISBAR tool was used by mentor to communicate with the doctor on duty and the patient was later referred to the teaching hospital in Kuopio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I ensured I work aseptically during medication preparation and administration. Hand hygiene was also observe before and after coming in contact with a patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Working ergonomically is an area I need to work more on as I often times just dive into the procedure without first checking the right position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BNF was used during my internship to source for information on drugs used in ward to treat or manage various ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
HEALTH AND FUNCTIONAL ABILITY PROMOTION<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Patients were encouraged to be as self reliant as possible in order to aid their rehabilitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
GUIDANCE AND TEACHING COMPETENCE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was somewhat of a challenge for me due to the fact that patients are more fluent in Finnish, nevertheless, I observed my mentor doing the patient’s guidance. I believe I will be able to make up for this in subsequent internships as these will be done in English speaking environments<\/p>\n\n\n\n
