week 2

I participated in the usual activities of caring for patients in the ward, that is helping in taking care of their hygiene needs, feeding, positioning, monitoring vital signs etc.

Under the supervision of my mentor, I prepared an antibiotic infusion and administer it to the patient as prescribed via Iv site. I had the opportunity to observe wound dressing two wound dressings. I was also allowed to practice the dressing of wounds in between the toes of a patient who have being transferred from the university hospital for the treatment of sepsis and receiving palliative care.

My mentor book two days for me to go and work with the ward pharmacist. During this period, learnt about dispensing and dosetting of medication for the various shift. I was also allowed to use the patient medication list to practice dosetting of medication for the morning and afternoon shift for the next day. I also practiced with him the preparation of antibiotics. This really boosted my confidence in drug calculations and drug dosetting.

I administered drugs directly to patient under the supervision of my mentor.  Together, we practice bed making and took some patients have the bath. I observed my mentor changed the stoma of a patient and replaced it with a new one. I hope that going forward I will get the opportunity to practice that whenever we get a patient with that kind of condition.

Lastly Learnt about Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This  is usually spread in the community by contact with infected people or things that are carrying the bacteria. This includes through contact with a contaminated wound or by sharing personal items, such as towels or razors, that have touched infected skin.

There was a patient in one of the rooms who had MRSA, so I was educated about how to take care of such patients. Before I enter the room, I use an alcohol base hand sanitizer, put on nose mask and wear hand gloves and the put on the protective goon before attending to the patient and immediately after that I take off everything sanitize my hands again and leave the room. This is to make sure that the bacteria do not spread to other rooms. I hope to learn more nursing skills in the coming week
