The first week of my internship started with attending an information session organized by the Kuopio University Hospital on Monday, August 5, 2024. After the meeting, I was taken to the KYS sensory and soft tissue surgery unit. I joined other students and a resource person who took us around the unit to help us know our way around the hospital throughout our period of studies at the hospital. I was also later introduced to my mentor (Aki). We both decided that the first two weeks of my internship would be spent studying and practicing the work of nurse anesthetists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first-week goal was to familiarize myself with the combination of drugs that are used by nurse anesthetists<\/strong> to put a patient under anesthesia throughout the period of surgery. Working closely with my mentor, he educated me on drugs such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Propolipid 10 mg\/mL (Propofol)<\/strong>: It is used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. It has a rapid onset and short duration of action, making it ideal for induction and sedation. It requires careful monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function, as it can cause hypotension and respiratory depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Profast 20 mg\/ml<\/strong>: It is a more concentrated form of Propofol, used for the same purposes as Propolipid 10 mg\/ml but with different dosing considerations due to the higher concentration. Both are essential in anesthesia practice for their rapid onset and to achieve the desired effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Midazolam<\/strong> Hameln<\/strong> is a short-acting hypnotic-sedative drug with anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, sedative, hypnotic, and amnesic properties.6<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It belongs to a class of drugs called\u00a0benzodiazepines<\/em>.<\/strong> This drug is unique among others in this class due to its rapid onset of effects and short duration of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fentanyl Hameln 50 \u00b5g\/ml:<\/strong> It is a potent opioid used for pain management, particularly during and after surgery. It is also used in anesthesia and for chronic pain management in patients with opioid tolerance. Fentanyl is very potent and can cause significant respiratory depression and bradycardia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultiva 2 mg:<\/strong> It is used for pain management during surgeries and as part of anesthesia. It has an ultra-short duration of action and is often used in procedures where rapid recovery from anesthesia is desired. It can cause respiratory depression and require careful monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medications use for the treatment of Bradycardia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atropine 1 mg\/mL<\/strong>: It is frequently used during surgery to treat bradycardia (a slow heart rate), which can occur due to the effects of anesthesia. It must be used carefully as it can cause tachycardia, dry mouth, blurred vision, and confusion, especially in higher doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effortil 10 mg\/mL<\/strong>: it is used to treat hypotension (low blood pressure) that can occur during surgery. It can cause an increase in heart rate (tachycardia) and blood pressure. Continuous monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate is essential during administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noradrenaline Sintetica 1 mg\/ml<\/strong>: It is used to manage hypotension, particularly during complex surgeries where blood pressure may drop critically. Continuous monitoring is needed due to the risk of excessive vasoconstriction, which can lead to tissue ischemia, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other medication used in the treatment of hypotension and high blood pressure include Nifedipin-Ratiopharm 20mg\/mL, Albetol 10mg\/mL, Catapresan 150 mg\/mL, and Nipruss 60 mg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mentor also introduced me to some drugs like Bicain Spinal 5mg\/ml, Pankaine spinal tung 5mg\/ml, Ropivacain fresenius KA 5mg\/ml and lidocaine baxter 20 mg\/ml, which are used for spinal and local anesthesia<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
