As a Registered Nurse working in both Finland and Norway, my daily activities involve working directly with patients and performing various administrative tasks. Hospitals, health centers, and homecare services, and digital tools play a vital role.
Some of the programs I have used include Lifecare, Abilita, Hilkka, Kunta Esko, Social Lifecare, and Pegasos. These programs have enabled me to document patient care, manage medication, and communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and supervisors. With digital documentation in homecare, I can ensure continuity of care even if the patient moves from one municipality to another or if two or more nurses care for the same patient.
In Norway, digitalization in the field of healthcare is advanced, and I have had the opportunity to realize how important digital competency is in everyday work as a nurse. Although the documentation systems differ slightly from those used in Finland, the main idea is the same: to prioritize patient safety and security. Documentation and communication among different healthcare professionals is also important. In home care services in Norway, digitalization is used in care planning, documentation of medication, and in reporting changes in patients’ conditions. I have noticed that in Norway, as in Finland, security and strict rules about confidentiality are prioritized, which builds trust between patients and different healthcare professionals.
Apart from professional tools, I also use social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube for daily use. These platforms are helpful in keeping me updated regarding healthcare trends and professional networking.

- TikTok: is considered an entertainment social network, but it can be utilized for healthcare education and awareness. For instance, videos can be created for self-care tips, healthy behaviors, and safety measures for patients. In my profession, TikTok can be utilized for sharing health and hygiene practices among younger patients.
- ChatGPT: This is a tool that can help in research, generate ideas for care plans, and even create patient education materials. For example, I can use this tool to provide information about a medical condition and make it easy to understand for a patient.
- Facebook: is also useful in healthcare as it could be utilized for posting updates on healthcare services, support group meetings, and community information. I could also use it as a page administrator for patients or families of homecare patients seeking information and answers from reliable sources.
- Instagram: This platform can be used for awareness, motivational, and educational content, as well as health tips. As a nurse, I can use this platform to post infographics, videos, and stories, promoting health literacy among my patients.
- WhatsApp: This tool is extremely useful for real-time communication between colleagues and patients with consent. Updates on patient conditions and reminders regarding appointment schedules or medication schedules are also possible.
Positive and Negative Aspects
Positive aspects:
- Social media and digital tools improve communication, accessibility, and patient engagement.
- Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube allow sharing health information in ways that are easy to understand and visually appealing.
- WhatsApp and professional platforms streamline coordination and reduce delays in care.
- AI tools like ChatGPT can save time and support decision-making.
Negative aspects:
- Patient confidentiality must always be maintained; social media use carries the risk of accidental data leaks.
- Misinformation can spread quickly online, which is why content must be carefully verified.
- Overuse of digital tools may reduce direct patient interaction and impact empathy if not balanced.
- Some patients, especially elderly or non-native speakers, may struggle with online communication and access.
Elements of Successful Digital Application Use
- Purpose: The application should help in patient care, team communication, and education, but not replace personal interaction.
- Usability: The application should be user-friendly and easy to use for both professionals and patients.
- Security & Privacy: The application should have high security features, such as authentication, encryption, and GDPR compliance.
- Integration: The application should integrate well with existing healthcare applications such as Lifecare, Pegasos, and Hilkka.
- Accessibility: The application should be patient-centered and accessible to patients regardless of their age, language, and digital literacy.
Self-Reflection
The use of social media and technology has opened my eyes to the potential that technology can bring to nursing care and professional communication. Although I feel comfortable using technology such as Lifecare and ChatGPT, I realize that with this privilege comes a sense of responsibility. The use of technology in this assignment has reminded me that there is a delicate balance between the use of technology and the quality of care. While technology can be useful in healthcare, it should not replace human interaction. In the future, I will continue to look for ways to use technology in a responsible and safe manner to support patients through social media while maintaining ethical standards in the process.
