My experiences living in both Finland and Norway, and my profession as a nurse, have enabled me to have a significant role digitalization plays in modern welfare countries. As a digital citizen, I have experience working and interacting with public services and digital marketplaces. I have come to appreciate the pros and cons of digital citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Public Services in Finland\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my time as a university student in Finland, I applied for financial support through Kela. I submitted applications for student financial aid and housing benefits entirely online. The whole process from application submission to receiving official decisions and payment notifications was handled digitally. I found the system efficient and transparent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital services require trust in electronic identification systems and confidence in understanding official language. Strong identification methods are secure, but they may also create barriers for individuals who are not comfortable with digital authentication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In healthcare, I have accessed my personal medical records through OmaKanta. Through this service, I can review prescriptions, laboratory results, and medical visits. As a healthcare professional, I consider this transparency a major strength of the Finnish system. Patients are more informed and can actively participate in their care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The service is mainly available in Finnish and Swedish. For migrants who do not speak these languages, this can become a significant barrier, even when they have good digital literacy skills. This highlights that digital access alone is not enough; language accessibility is equally important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reviewed my future pension estimate through Keva, since I have worked in the public sector. When comparing retirement at 63 and 68 years of age, I noticed a financial difference. Retiring at 63 would significantly reduce the monthly pension amount, while postponing retirement until 68 would increase considerably. This comparison demonstrates how digital tools promote transparency and help individuals make decisions about their financial future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Welfare Services in Norway <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Norway, similar services are offered through NAV, where citizens can apply for parental leave, sick pay, unemployment benefits, and other social support services. Healthcare services are accessible through Helsenorge, where patients can review prescriptions, vaccination records, referrals, and even change their general practitioner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From my experience, Norwegian digital platforms are slightly more intuitive in design compared to some Finnish systems. However, both countries maintain high standards of digital security and data protection. Development trends in Norway show increasing integration of telemedicine, and digital communication between patients and healthcare providers. Artificial intelligence is gradually being introduced for administrative tasks. These developments aim to improve efficiency and accessibility, particularly in rural areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Consumer Services and Price Evaluation <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in N\u00e4rpes, a small town in Finland, provides a unique perspective on digital commerce. Local stores such as Lidl, Halpa-Halli, Tokmanni, and Jysk provide everyday necessities. However, their product selection can sometimes be limited. For example, when purchasing a kitchen appliance, I compared prices between a local store and Amazon. The local store offered the product a slightly lower price, but the variety was limited, and technical information was minimal. On Amazon, I found multiple brands, and customer reviews. Although shipping costs slightly increased the total price, the additional information and broader selection helped me make more decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For travel bookings, platforms such as Booking.com, Trivago, and Airbnb offer different advantages. Booking.com and Trivago are useful for comparing hotels and cancellation policies, while Airbnb provides more personalized accommodation options. Reliability depends largely on user reviews, host ratings, and clear policies. As a digital citizen, critical evaluation of information is essential before making decisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comparison illustrates how digital commerce offers convenience, and broader selection, while local shops provide immediate accessibility and physical customer service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Services in Healthcare <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In nursing, electronic health record systems are essential tools. These systems allow healthcare professionals to document patient care, manage medication lists, and communicate across institutions. The main advantage of digital records is improving patient safety. Access to updated information reduces medication errors and ensures continuity of care. When patients move between municipalities, digital documentation ensures that their medical history follows them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital systems also have disadvantages. Documentation can be time-consuming and may reduce time spent in direct patient interaction. Technical issues or system downtime can disrupt workflow and increase stress. Therefore, digital tools must support healthcare professionals rather than dominate clinical work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telemedicine has also expanded in both Finland and Norway. Remote consultations increase accessibility for patients living in rural areas. The elderly patients or individuals with limited digital skills may struggle to use video-based healthcare services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digitalisation and the Digital Gap <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite high levels of digitalization in Nordic countries, the digital gap remains a challenge. The digital gap refers to inequalities in access, skills, and confidence in using digital technologies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elderly individuals, migrants, people with disabilities, and those with limited education may face barriers when services become primarily digital. If public offices reduce physical service points, individuals without internet access or digital identification risk social exclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also psychological and health-related risks. Constant connectivity may increase stress and blur boundaries between work and private life. Digital health and wellness require balanced technology use and awareness of mental well-being. As a healthcare professional, I recognize the importance of ensuring that no patient is excluded from essential services due to digital barriers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Rights, Security, and Responsibility <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital citizenship includes rights such as privacy, access to services, and freedom of expression. At the same time, it involves responsibilities, including protecting passwords, recognizing phishing attempts, and safeguarding personal data. In healthcare, digital security is particularly critical. Patient data is highly sensitive. Cybersecurity breaches can compromise privacy and patient safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethical awareness and compliance with data protection regulations are essential. My online behavior and digital communication also reflect my professional identity as a nurse. Digital etiquette and respectful communication are important aspects of responsible participation in digital society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal Reflection <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I think of this assignment, I can see just how digitalized my life is. I can use digital services in Finland and Norway, and I don\u2019t even think about it. It\u2019s just normal for me to log in and check my information, and I can take care of important matters online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By completing this essay, I have realized that not everybody has the same experience when it comes to digital services. To me, digital services are simple and convenient. However, to elderly people, migrants, and those who are not good at using digital services, these services can be challenging and frustrating. Even in countries like Finland and Norway, there can be inequality through digitalization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Digital Competence Test shows that I am good at communicating, information searching, and online safety. As a nurse, I have learned the importance of online safety and data protection. However, I have also learned that I am not only practical but also have room for learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I learned technology and responsibility are important in digital citizen. Being a nurse, I should assist patients who are having difficulties with technology and ensure that technology is not replacing human touch. This assignment helped me understand digitalization as convenient and affects equality and responsibility as a professional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
