My current job and digital tools in it
I currently work as a solutions specialist in an IT firm that specializes in the public social and health care sector. We provide solution services, application services and information technology services to the current hospital districts and in a few weeks well being counties. As a solutions specialist I currently focus on digital solutions for the healthcare sector. These can be for example services related to appointment bookings, chat services, mobile applications and applications for small specific needs. In my work I use digital tools consistently. Most of my work day consists of collaboration client meetings through Microsoft Teams. With Teams we as a team also communicate and with its link to SharePoint we store our information, memos, instructions etc. In addition to this I use many virtual desktops, intranets, VPN-services and remote connections. For the hour sheet related to billing I use Project Online and there we also have different sections for our Project Informations, reporting and guides. In application support especially we use Efecte which is a ITSM platform that combines the data of support tickets, change notifications, CMDB and the notifications that we send to our customers. In addition to these we use OneNote for meeting notes and infomation spreading inside our team, Visio for drawing process or architecture pictures for customers and also the other basic Microsoft products Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
Five new tools
Monday
Monday was a totally new tool for me. When exploring it I was surprised it had so many different important functionalities to it, and that it had many big companies as listed int he trusted customers section, for example CocaCola. Monday could be used to create fluent workflows with a modern visualization. For example the monthly planning visualization I found very good and clear. I think Monday helps you have a clear visual outlook on the work situation and this promotes staying update on tasks and progress. Their project overview looked really good,
I think Monday contains all the important parts with work management, marketer, sales CRM, projects and dev and could be well used in my team of digital solutions. (Monday.com 2022.)
LinkedIn is familiar to me before with my personal life, but it could be used more in working life also. Nowadays I read the site a lot more, and there clearly is a raising importance with the visibility that individuals get there while representing their company also. This can work as a doublesided sword and needs careful consideration in the topics chosen. It can be used to get visibility to the services and products but this requires something new that interests the readers. It also would require authenticity because people are very sensitive to too aggressive marketing and not being genuine. I think the best way it could be used, would be to showcase your interesting projects and services (with customer approval of course) to create awareness and create interest. (LinkedIn 2022.)
Open Badges
Open Badges was a service I had not heard of before. I think it would be a good service to demonstrate skills in my team to showcase our value to our customers and also to spread information about peoples special skills inside my company.
In a big company it can be hard to manage who has knowledge and skills and in what sector or technology. Open Badges would make skills and learning visible in a new and visually good way. Also the sharing oh these in social media would create trust to our capabilities and also create interest to learn more inside the company. (Open Badges 2022.)
Mural
Mural was also completely new to me. Mural would offer my work time an interesting way to collaborate virtually with a digital whiteboard solutions. This could be used when innovating, designing and planning. In my work team there are people from various cities in Finland so virtual ways to communicate are needed to collaborate efficiently. I especially found interesting Murals offered ready templates for project kickoffs and for leading better hybrid meetings.
Mural had many categories for ready templates that I could immediately see beeing useful in collabotion. These possibilities of joint working, collaboration and input would create much value to our team. (Mural 2022.)
Todoist
This was an interesting solution where you could also embed your personal tasks and your professional tasks to plan the whole day. I think the Todoist is simple yet effective and could help organize and prioritize your work. In my line of work there are always many ongoing projects simultaneously and while jumping from one meeting to another the day can easily feel like you haven’t accomplished enough.
With a simple application like this, you could easily great tasks for your day that helped you make visual what you need to accomplish and see your progress. I thought that it is good that this application also has the possibility to do subtasks, create projects, discuss them together and categorize them. This would also help when looking at the bigger picture and how the tasks connect to each other. (Doist Inc. s.a.)
Social Media
With the using of social media, I find it very important to always evaluate your actions with a long perspective. If I comment this or post this, how will this effect me if this was for example seen by my future employer? What kind of representation am I giving of myself? I have read many colored comment sections in news and sometimes I can also feel getting provoked to react to unkind comments or peoples lack of compassion. But I have kept a line that I will not participate because I can see no good coming out of it. In some cases it might even turn on me. I also carefully consider what I post myself and who I accept to see my posts and stories. I like to keep my private life quite private and I do not share very openly my life. I for example do not share my locations and if I share my children’s photos to my closed ones I usually delete them after a short while. This is my way of trying to ensure them some privacy in the future.
On the other hand I think social media enables some interaction to the people whom you live far away from and want to have some link to your life easily. And on one perspective some people have turned the social media into their work and get their income from it. I would not be willing to sacrifice my privacy in that way. I enjoy my privacy and also do not want to use my mobile phone any more then I already do. I think it important to try to keep the phone using in a small role.
Succesful use of digital applications
Digital applications help us and are to advantage, but at the same time I am happy that I grew up in the age when applications were not in an important role in our lives. I think it is important that the application is easy to use, serves it purpose and also to consider that you do not spend time on multiple applications that serve the same purpose. I think digital applications are here to help us, but need to remain that way. In the side role of our lives.
Self-evaluation
This assignment showcased me many interesting and totally new digital platforms. I work in a large publicly owned firm so in that case the products we use are carefully evaluated and we for example cannot download software to our own work computers by ourselves. If we wanted to start using one of these it would need to go through a process in out IT ward and be carefully evaluated regarding data privacy and data security and the software’s possible interoperability to other programs.
