The first electronic system was highly anticipated and welcomed, because data security and proper ways to store information had been topics of discussion for a long time.

Moving to the public sector led me to a completely digital world. Even a paper calendar is forbidden! Communication, especially with familiar collaborators, is done through Teams, either via messages or calls, while confidential communication is handled within client information systems. In health social work, documentation is still done in two separate systems, which is very time-consuming. However, the increased use of digital services has made communication easier and, for example, reduced the need for travel during the workday. Digital calendars allow seamless sharing of meeting invitations and effective time management. Yet, I sometimes wonder, what happens if the digital systems crash? I wouldn’t be able to check who I was supposed to meet or document our meeting.

Social work clients are often among the most vulnerable individuals, requiring extensive support and services. While some of them use digital services fluently, not all have access to smartphones, ID cards, or online banking credentials. Typically, they rely on prepaid phone plans, and even waiting in line to call official numbers can cost so much that they feel it is unaffordable. Clearly, professional assistance and support are often essential to resolving their issues. Therefore, it is important for professionals to have a solid understanding of digital services and how to handle them efficiently.

In today’s world, it is very common for people to share details about themselves and their lives on various social media platforms without much thought about who might see or misuse this information. Various scams are common, and we might place a little too much trust in the safety of our personal information. For this reason, it is crucial to remain vigilant and ensure that our professional work adheres to laws and regulations.

GDPR is the strictest data privacy and security law in the world. GDPR is also relevant to my work, as it involves handling clients’ personal information. I can only process data that I am authorized to access due to my position, and I must understand how to handle it appropriately. Every click and every second spent is saved in the customer’s data. Following the data protection reform, broad consents are no longer allowed, which has its drawbacks. Sometimes, restricted access rights make it more challenging to manage clients’ matters, which can also frustrate the clients themselves. In network collaboration, separate consent forms are often used to facilitate the smooth handling of a client’s case.

The European Commission aims to ensure that by 2030, all key public services are available in digital form, everyone has access to electronic health records, and all citizens have access to a digital ID. Security has been emphasized in these goals, and I truly hope that those developing these services will stay one step ahead of criminals. In my opinion, the goals should also ensure that everyone has access to services and assistance, whether through digital means or without them.

Captivated by AI

I first became acquainted with ChatGPT this autumn. I’ve observed how some acquaintances have used AI to compose music or create visual characters, and I’ve also heard that in certain industries, it’s completely normal to leverage AI for crafting written content or marketing tailored to specific customer groups. This feels quite foreign to me. Reflecting on my own work history and the questionable ways client information was stored in the early days, I asked ChatGPT about the risks associated with modern patient and information systems. In response, I received a lengthy list mentioning data security risks, privacy risks, technological risks, organizational and human factors, as well as legal risks. It even provided a checklist for managing those risks.

In the social sector, professionals are known for their comprehensive approach to understanding a client’s situation. Out of curiosity, I asked AI how it would address the case of a homeless client struggling with substance abuse. I was genuinely surprised by how thoroughly it considered different perspectives. It acknowledged the urgency and complexity of the situation, the need for multidisciplinary collaboration, and the importance of harm reduction efforts. However, it did overlook local resources and the client’s own will.

Still, perhaps AI could serve as a useful tool when a professional encounters an entirely new situation and needs assistance in considering various perspectives.

Self-evaluation

I was absolutely amazed by ChatGPT and even got a little excited about its potential. At the same time, my inner critic immediately began pondering the kind of damage a system this intelligent could cause. Will people’s own cognition and ability to assess situations start to decline if we rely too heavily on AI to tell us the best course of action?

Overall, while I accept technology and digitalization as part of progress and see many benefits in them, I hope their use will be approached with caution, broadly recognizing the risks and vulnerabilities involved. I acknowledge that my knowledge in these areas is quite limited, but my concerns were not eased when I read in the orientation materials that even the programmers of AlphaGo didn’t fully understand the decisions their creation made. As early as 2013, Marco Annunziata said, “So we are moving to a world where the machines we work with are not just intelligent; they are brilliant. They are self-aware, they are predictive, reactive and social.” And that`s little bit scary!

Topics related to digitalization and IT solutions feel very unfamiliar to me. To truly understand what’s being discussed, I would need to dive much deeper into these phenomena. At work, I’m willing to learn what’s necessary, but in my free time, I simply lack the interest to go further. While I believe I have a general understanding of the risks, this course has made me realize just how superficial my knowledge really is.

From history to today When I started working in the social sector about 20 years ago, client records and weekly notes were kept in a paper notebook stored in a locked cabinet.
