As a dentist and Digital Health student, I have seen how technology can support diagnosis, treatment planning, patient communication and information management. Digitalisation is changing not only the equipment used in dentistry but also how dental professionals work and how patients receive care.
Digital patient records and imaging are important examples. Electronic records make patient information and images easier to store and access, while digital radiography provides faster access to images and supports communication between healthcare professionals.

Digital Technologies in Dental Practice

Intraoral scanners can create digital impressions, which can be used for treatment planning and communication with dental laboratories. CAD/CAM and 3D printing have also improved the design and production of some dental restorations and appliances.
Digital images and 3D models can also help dentists explain oral health conditions and treatment options to patients. This can improve understanding and support shared decision-making.

Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry

Artificial intelligence is likely to become increasingly important in dentistry. AI can analyse large amounts of information, identify patterns and support areas such as dental imaging, treatment planning, risk assessment and administrative work.
However, AI cannot replace professional judgement. AI may provide incorrect results, so dentists need to evaluate its recommendations and consider the individual patient. I therefore see AI as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for dental professionals.

Benefits and Challenges

Digitalisation can improve efficiency by reducing time spent on documentation, appointment management and other repetitive tasks. This could give dental professionals more time to focus on patients.
At the same time, digitization creates challenges. Dental practices handle sensitive information such as medical histories, dental records and X-rays, which must be protected from unauthorized access and cyber attacks. Digital awareness are also important because both healthcare professionals and patients need sufficient skills to use digital services effectively. Moreover data does not automatically mean better healthcare. Data needs to be accurate, relevant, secure and used appropriately.

Future of Digitalisation in Dentistry

In the future, I expect dentistry to become more connected and data-driven. Digital imaging, intraoral scanning, AI, CAD/CAM and 3D printing may become increasingly integrated into dental practice. AI could support earlier detection, prevention and more personalized care, while digital monitoring could help patients and professionals follow oral health between visits.
Digitization will also require healthcare professionals to continuously develop their digital skills while maintaining professional judgement. Overall, I believe digitization has strong potential to improve dentistry, but technology should always support better patient care rather than be used simply because it is available. Privacy, safety, professional judgement and the human relationship between the patient and healthcare professional should remain important.

Risks of Digitalisation

An open digital society provides many benefits, such as faster communication, easier access to information and convenient digital services. However, increased use of technology also creates risks, including privacy violations, cyber attacks, misuse of personal information and the spread of false information. In healthcare, these risks are particularly important because digital systems contain sensitive information. In dentistry, patient records, medical histories, X-rays and treatment information must be protected from unauthorized access. A data breach could affect both patient privacy and trust in healthcare.

GDPR and Data Protection

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) aims to strengthen the protection of personal data and give individuals more control over how their information is used. It emphasizes transparency, data minimization, accuracy and security. People also have rights concerning their personal information, such as accessing and correcting their data. For healthcare organisations, GDPR is especially important when handling sensitive health information. Dental practices need to consider who can access patient information, why it is collected, how long it is stored and how it is protected.

Positive and Negative Effects of GDPR

A major benefit of GDPR is increased awareness of privacy and data security. It gives people greater rights and organisations clearer responsibilities, which can increase trust in digital services. However, GDPR can also create challenges. Healthcare professionals and organisations may need additional training, documentation and security procedures, which can make some processes more complicated.Overall, I believe GDPR is necessary in an increasingly digital society. The benefits of digitalisation should not come at the cost of privacy and security. The main challenge is finding a balance between using data to improve healthcare and protecting individuals’ rights.

Using ChatGPT

I used ChatGPT and asked questions related to artificial intelligence in dentistry:

1.How can artificial intelligence support dentists in diagnosis and treatment planning?
2.Could artificial intelligence replace dentists in the future? Why or why not?

The answers were generally clear, relevant and easy to understand. ChatGPT explained that AI could support dentists by analysing dental images, identifying possible problems, supporting treatment planning and reducing some administrative tasks. It also explained that AI is unlikely to completely replace dentists because clinical judgement, professional responsibility and communication with patients are still important.
However, I noticed that the answers can sometimes be general and may not consider every individual clinical situation. AI can also provide information that needs to be checked. Therefore, answers from ChatGPT should be compared with reliable professional and scientific sources, especially when dealing with healthcare.
Additionally, ChatGPT showed me that AI can be a useful tool for learning, finding ideas and supporting professional work. In dentistry, it could help reduce repetitive tasks and support decision-making. However, I believe AI should be used as a supporting technology rather than a replacement for professional knowledge and human judgement. Privacy, accuracy, and patient safety should also be considered when using AI in healthcare.

Self-Evaluation

During this assignment, I learned more about how digitization is changing society, healthcare and working life. The topics on Big Data, the Industrial Internet, cyber security, AI and future technologies showed me that digitization can create many opportunities but also new risks. I also learned that privacy, cyber security and responsible use of data are especially important when dealing with healthcare information.
Reading other students’ experiences helped me understand that digitization can develop differently between countries, organisations and professional fields. The GDPR section also made me more aware of the importance of protecting personal information and giving people greater control over their data.Using ChatGPT gave me a better understanding of the possibilities and limitations of AI. I learned that AI can be useful for learning and supporting professional tasks, but its answers should not always be accepted without checking.

Finally this tasks gave me a broader understanding of digitization and its impact on society and working life. It also showed me the importance of using digital technologies responsibly and critically.

Links to blogs i commented on

DIGI SOCIETY

DIGI SOCIETY

My Experience with Digitalisation Digitalisation has changed healthcare, including dentistry.
