FINAL EVALUATION
Time of my Paediatric Internship has run really fast. Therefore step-by step I have got to my Final Evaluation.
First of all I would highlight this internship has been pretty interesting and absolutely new for me, because it has been very different from my previous ones in a hospital environment.
However this practice had been very useful and interesting for me. I very love to be here 💜
LEARNING SKILLS
Level of competence:
After my Middle-Evaluation discussion with my teachers, I reviewed and updated my blog; I have once again done own analysing with self critical view and make conclusion for my next steps in this practice.
I am seriously attentive and really cautious about various nursing care work and especially my duties related to family and their health.
I am always open and welcoming honest and fair feedback. I am able to evaluate my skills , as well as critically evaluate myself and my actions. I have a great attitude to criticism, I like to receive feedback , as well as to request it. I understand that it assists me in adjustments and developing my skills and knowledge as well as improve my abilities .
Goals:
- Beginning this internship: reviewing and creating my training plan; description of initial level, previously completed internships, planning of own activity;
- During the internship: evaluate progress of learning in blog and participation in collective activities of training;
- On the last steps: make analyse and summarise of gotten new experience and new knowledge the I have got during this internship; update and correct my individual training plan independently in accordance with instructions; reflects on the progress of my learning; identifies my own strengths and areas to be developed.
Self-Evaluation
At my first step in this internship, I had have to implement the knowledge and practical skills that I had already been learning In Savonia UAS and by my previous internships in various nursing care fields.
And by my final steps in this internship, I had been demonstrating my new knowledge and progress in my nurses skills.
I may say promptly that I have tried and succeeded in making that goodunderstandeble connection with children. By the end of the last fifth week of practice , I felt that I had learned to feel the children and pour out their mood and show empathy for them in different situations.
Following recommendations and guidelines from my tutor-teacher at Middle-Evaluation, I changed my writing style and have started to write my blog by describeing in detail my thoughts , experiences and summarize the most important things directly according to Evaluation sheet.
ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALITY
Level of competence: Particularly during this internship in the Kindergarden where there are kids all over the world I have to apply the ethical guidelines and legislation related to children’s rights . Morover, I have to consider child orientation and the cultural aspect in his or her nursing work
Goals: To speak with kiddos in that language which is suitable for them and more comfortable. If a child doesn’t speak yet, I think it it even easier to build trust and respect with him ot her. To get to know the child’s background and culture closer and be able to understand better the mindset of a kid.
This rule works both with children and with colleagues in our team-work.
Self-Evaluation:
Thus I am pleased to work in multicultural team and working with collective rules and instructions. I very well know how to play in teamwork.
I am able to help my colleagues by substituting each one.
For example:
- I had been woking 1 day in a new group, where there were children of 2 years old. It was because a colleague was ill. Therefore me and Minna were substituting her. By substituting our colleague, I have once again seen that teamwork and helping each other are very important aspect in nursing life;
- When we played in the yard, I offer my help-hand to my colleague with a baby without waiting for her to ask. Therefore I am able to understand my colleagues without words.
Thereby I understud once again the significance of multidisciplinary collaboration in nursing care of children and family. And I have familiared with instructions governing exceptional circumstances in the training unit.
Throughout the practice , I had been communicating with children in Finnish and in English. and built trusting relationships with them. Even though different children came from different backgrounds, I understand and respect their point of view and world outlook, and I succeeded.
WORKING SOCIETY COMPETENCE
Level of competence: I have already encountered with the team members of this very kindergarden when was having an interview, however, I still have to get to know them better and it may help me in gaining more experience in this field.
Goals: It is very important to be able to work in teams and assume responsibility for my own work . This goal works both with kids and collegues.
Self-Evaluation
I was part of the team at this practice , many times I received feedback about my work and moments that need to be adjusted a little in order to develop my skills in a practical way.
CHILDREN – ORIENTED NURSING CARE
Level of competence: Uses child-oriented approach and takes cultural aspects into consideration in my nursing care
I have never worked in kindergarten, especially with children and their parents and relativies. Thus I assume that this is a big first step in Paediatric field. I believe that I will be needing a lot of guidance at this stage since you cannot just tell children information in that way you tell her to the adults and elderly.
Goals: It refers to the many aspects of Paediatric knowledge, skills, and abilities required of nurses who provide care to children. This includes knowledge and expertise in areas such as child development, pediatric pharmacology, communication and assessment of children, and family-centered care. Nurses who specialise in children-oriented nursing care must be able to appropriately adapt care to meet the unique needs of children, as well as be knowledgeable about the specific health conditions that commonly affect children; provide resource-oriented family nursing care, inform the kid’s parents about the current situations, talk about the experiences of the child, his or her thoughts and feelings, achievements for the day and overall well-being , maybe some problems that need solutions and the things that we can focus on.
Self-Evaluation:
In this internship I have got great experience and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with children and their families. Additionally, nurses who provide children-oriented nursing care must have a compassionate and empathetic attitude towards their patients, and be able to provide care in a way that is reassuring and non-threatening to children.
For example:
- There was the Finnish national holiday – Kalevala Day.With my colleagues we organised a celebration event in our group in which we were listening to music, reading the Kalevala poem and discussing it with the our children. Thus thereby I have I have implemented different national culture aspects and child-oriented approach into consideration in the nursing care;
- There are a couple of children with their own cultural and religious background in our group. Thus, when we was planning the lessons (päivän ja viikon ohje), we always keep this aspect into our mind and due to proper respect they religious backgrounds we had not been playing heavy music. Thereby it had been realising respectful and non-judgmental towards our children and they families, regardless of their cultural or religious background by implementing cultural and religious practices.
In result, I have payed my y consider onto different national culture aspects and child-oriented approaches in nursing care, I had been providing individual care that takes into account child’ unique needs, values, and beliefs. All of this make better outcomes, increased children and they family satisfaction, and improved overall health and well-being.
Additionally, I have learnt about implement in practice the different cultural and religious practices: be respectful and non-judgmental towards our children and they families, regardless of their cultural or religious background. By implementing these steps, me and my colleagues had been creating a supportive and respectful environment for children and families from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, and provide care that meets their unique needs and expectations, learn about the cultural and religious practices of children in our group; understand and respect different beliefs, values, rituals, and customs to provide appropriate care.
EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING
Level of competence: I assume that in order to explore these competencies further, I will consider examples from this very practice, and links will be made between the various examples from practice and the competencies in order to demonstrate their importance.
Goals: be able to apply evidence-based information on children’s growth and development, the factors influencing them and on family nursing.
Self-Evaluation:
I have got more information and learnt about Initial Discussion. It takes place before the child is gone in and during child is being in kindergarten environment + VASU – preschool observation form. My mentor deploy explain me about interview with parents and about B-W – 4 year old kids’ form and demonstrated me how it works in real life.
All these care plans and meetings help me and my colleagues in settings shared objectives and agreeing on the ways to promote each child’s individual development, learning and wellbeing in a systematic and goal-oriented manner.
CLINICAL NURSING CARE
This very aspect is really specific and differs from a hospital environment
Level of competence: I have experienced “working” with kids only at my lessons during the labs and simulations.
Goals: I want to analyse and evaluate children’s needs, mood changes wishes , threats and how they see perspectives as it really differs from adulsts’ ones . I know for sure that I will be playing a lot with kids during this preriod and I wanna build trusting relationships with kids , so they can openly and easily share their emotions and worries with me. Also each kid is an individual, so I want to experience building a particular approach with everyone , so we can get to know each other better. According to the care for children and mentor them, this in my goals as well. Aslo offering emotional supportand and handling difficult family members or situations what comes to my mind when I think of clinical goals for this practice.
Self-Evaluation:
Like I have mentioned over, in this practice there are not the most common nursing care interventions as erform children’s pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy / injections or medication calculations and management for children.
But I have got really great experience to identifies basic needs of 2-4 years children and plans and performs basic nursing care with every day monitoring and assesses children´s vital signs.
For example:
During holidays-week (hiihtoloma) we had group with different ages children from 2 to 5 yeas and there were many new children. In this way, I was supervising, assessing and monitoring each of new children and providing my care with paying more attention to the various individual characteristics of each one child.
- The children who are more younger sleep more longer and therefor they should sleep separately from the older children who sleep little. Therefore we did not put our children to sleep all together in one room. Otherwise we have divided our group into 3 small groups and put them to sleep in different rooms separately. Thereby we provided them quite comfortable environment for healthy sleeping.
- The children with food allergies to eggs were seated at a separate table in order to prevent the negative effects of smell and inhalation of the allergen.
I have once again realised the important role kindergarten workers play in promoting the health and well-being of young children, as well as in developing healthy habits in kindergarten!
Paediatric nurses in kindergarten must be skilled in working with children from different backgrounds and developmental stages. They must be able to communicate effectively with both children and their parents, providing education about healthy habits and disease prevention. Furthermore, they should be knowledgeable about child development, so that they can identify any potential problems.
I think that I have enough demonstrated my abilities, my nursing skillful and my resource for families, educators, promoting healthy lifestyles and helping children to realise their full grow physical, cognitive and emotional potential. To summarise, I would say that have enough demonstrated my previous knowledge and experience from previous practice as well as my nursing skilful paediatric field.
I am very pleased, inspired and motivated to have this unique experience!
Many thanks to my colleagues and especially to my mentor Mina!
Aika meni niiiin nopeasti.

Dear Inga,
Supervising you is challenging because you talk and write a lot and sometimes it’s hard to find out what you mean? Practice focusing on what’s important/ (see my comment about reflecting) I hope you don’t mind when I instructed you to “twist the iron wire” Many times less is more :) I believe that this internship gave you new skills (knowledge, skills and attitudes) to care for and deal with children and their parents. I can´t find your TASK of this internship here in your blog? After that I have checked that ( let me know) Ill give you the credits :)
