My work combines laboratory diagnostics, patient care, health coaching and the use of digital healthcare technologies to support high-quality, patient-centred care.

As a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist, I collect and process patient samples, perform laboratory analyses and point-of-care testing (POCT), evaluate sample quality, assess and report laboratory results, and participate in internal and external quality assurance. I am also responsible for ensuring that laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables are functioning properly and meet quality standards. An important part of my role is providing guidance to patients and healthcare professionals regarding laboratory examinations while maintaining high standards of patient safety, accuracy and customer service.

In addition to laboratory work, I specialize in sleep coaching and CPAP therapy. As a sleep coach, I provide evidence-based counselling for patients experiencing insomnia and other sleep-related difficulties. During appointments, I assess patients’ sleep history, review sleep questionnaires, identify factors affecting sleep, and develop individual care plans together with the patient. I guide patients through behavioural strategies and practical exercises to improve sleep quality, monitor their progress and, when necessary, refer them to the appropriate healthcare professional for further assessment.

As a CPAP nurse, I initiate and monitor continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. I educate patients about their condition and treatment, configure CPAP devices according to prescribed settings, fit appropriate masks and provide comprehensive instructions on the use, maintenance and cleaning of the equipment. I also utilize digital remote-monitoring platforms to evaluate treatment adherence, therapy effectiveness, mask leakage and other clinical indicators. Based on the follow-up data, I provide additional counselling, optimize treatment when appropriate and collaborate closely with the treating physician to ensure successful long-term therapy.

My work requires close collaboration with physicians, occupational health professionals, physiotherapists, laboratory specialists and other healthcare personnel. Effective communication, multidisciplinary teamwork and patient education are essential for delivering safe, evidence-based and high-quality healthcare services.

Digital tools play a central role in my daily work. I use electronic health record systems to document patient care, laboratory information systems to manage samples and report results, and digital appointment management systems to coordinate patient visits. Communication with colleagues takes place through Microsoft Teams, email and telephone. In sleep coaching, digital questionnaires and electronic documentation support patient assessment and follow-up, while CPAP therapy relies extensively on cloud-based remote-monitoring platforms that enable continuous evaluation of treatment outcomes. These digital technologies improve communication, patient safety, efficiency and continuity of care.

Because my work combines laboratory medicine, nursing, patient education and digital health technologies, I believe that modern digital applications and selected social media tools can further enhance collaboration, professional development, patient engagement and the overall quality of healthcare services.

Utilization of New Social Media and Digital Tools in My Daily Work

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) application developed by OpenAI that generates human-like text and supports tasks such as writing, summarising information, brainstorming ideas and organising knowledge (ChatGPT n.d.). As a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist, Registered Nurse, Sleep Coach and CPAP Nurse, I perform a wide range of tasks that involve patient education, clinical documentation, communication with healthcare professionals and continuous professional learning. ChatGPT could support these activities by helping to organise information, improve written communication and prepare educational materials.

One practical application would be the development of patient education resources related to laboratory examinations, sleep disorders and CPAP therapy. Patients often need clear explanations about their condition, treatment and self-care, and the tool could assist in producing understandable drafts based on evidence-based information. Similarly, it could help simplify professional language when preparing written instructions or educational materials for different patient groups. However, all content would require careful review to ensure that it is accurate, clinically appropriate and tailored to the patient’s individual needs.

The application could also contribute to my professional development by summarising research articles, comparing information from clinical guidelines and supporting the preparation of presentations or training materials. These functions may reduce the time spent on administrative tasks and information processing, allowing more time for direct patient care and professional collaboration.

Despite these potential benefits, ChatGPT should only be used as a supporting tool rather than as a source of clinical decision-making. Healthcare professionals remain responsible for evaluating the accuracy, relevance and reliability of any generated information. Clinical decisions must always be based on professional judgement, current evidence and established guidelines. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasises that artificial intelligence should be implemented in healthcare in a safe, transparent and responsible manner while ensuring that responsibility for decision-making remains with healthcare professionals (World Health Organization 2021, 23–30).

Data protection is another essential consideration in healthcare. Because my work involves handling sensitive patient information, identifiable personal or clinical data should never be entered into AI applications unless they are specifically approved for healthcare use and comply with applicable privacy and security requirements. The WHO also highlights the importance of protecting privacy, maintaining confidentiality and establishing appropriate governance when implementing artificial intelligence in healthcare (World Health Organization 2021, 19–22).

DeepL

DeepL is an artificial intelligence-based translation service that enables fast and accurate translation between different languages. It is widely used in education and working life because it produces natural-sounding translations and supports communication across language barriers (DeepL n.d.). In healthcare, translation tools can improve access to international information and facilitate communication in increasingly multicultural care environments.

In my professional roles, DeepL could support access to English-language research articles, clinical guidelines and manufacturer instructions related to laboratory diagnostics, sleep medicine and CPAP therapy. As new research and recommendations are published continuously, efficient translation could make it easier to stay informed about current evidence and incorporate new knowledge into clinical practice. In laboratory services, the tool could also assist in understanding documentation related to laboratory equipment, quality management and emerging diagnostic methods.

Another valuable application would be patient education. Clear communication is essential for patient safety, treatment adherence and informed decision-making. When caring for patients with limited Finnish language skills, DeepL could help prepare simple written instructions about laboratory examinations, sleep hygiene or the use and maintenance of CPAP equipment. Although the translated materials could improve patients’ understanding and confidence in their treatment, they should always be reviewed carefully before use to ensure that the language is accurate, culturally appropriate and clinically correct.

Language barriers remain an important challenge in healthcare. A systematic review by Al Shamsi et al. (2020) found that limited proficiency in the local language may negatively affect communication between healthcare professionals and patients, reduce the quality of care and increase risks to patient safety. Translation tools may therefore provide valuable support, particularly when combined with effective professional communication (Shamsi, Almutairi, Mashrafi & Kalbani 2020).

Despite these advantages, DeepL cannot replace professional expertise or qualified interpreting services when accurate clinical communication is essential. Medical terminology may occasionally be translated incorrectly or lose important nuances, making professional verification necessary before translated content is used in patient education or clinical practice. Furthermore, confidential patient information should never be entered into translation services unless they comply with healthcare-specific data protection and privacy requirements.

Miro

Miro is a digital visual collaboration platform that enables users to create, organise and share information on an online whiteboard. It supports brainstorming, project planning, teamwork and education by providing a shared visual workspace for individuals and groups (Miro n.d.).

In healthcare, visual collaboration can improve communication and make complex processes easier to understand. In my professional roles Miro could be used to support multidisciplinary teamwork, patient education and quality improvement activities.

For example, Miro could help visualise patient care pathways, laboratory workflows and CPAP treatment processes, making it easier for healthcare professionals to identify areas for improvement and discuss possible solutions. During multidisciplinary meetings, the platform could provide a shared workspace for collecting ideas, planning projects and documenting agreed actions. This could strengthen collaboration between professionals working in different locations and support more structured decision-making.

The platform could also be useful when developing patient education materials. Visual diagrams, flowcharts and illustrations may help patients better understand laboratory examinations, factors affecting sleep quality and the practical use of CPAP equipment. Presenting information visually can support learning, encourage patient participation and improve understanding of treatment and self-management.

Although Miro offers many practical advantages, its effective use depends on adequate digital skills, user engagement and appropriate training. In addition, healthcare organisations must ensure that collaboration platforms are used in accordance with data protection regulations. Confidential or identifiable patient information should not be stored or shared through such platforms unless they have been approved for healthcare use and meet the required security standards.

Doodle

Doodle is a digital scheduling tool designed to simplify meeting planning and appointment coordination. By allowing participants to indicate their availability, it helps groups identify suitable meeting times efficiently and reduces the need for extensive email communication (Doodle n.d.; Teräslahti 2023).

Effective scheduling is an important part of healthcare because patient care often depends on collaboration between professionals from different disciplines. In my work coordinating meetings with physicians, nurses, laboratory professionals and other healthcare providers can be challenging due to varying work schedules and responsibilities. A scheduling tool such as Doodle could make this process more efficient and organised.

One practical use would be planning multidisciplinary meetings related to patient care, quality improvement initiatives or the development of laboratory and sleep services. It could also support the organisation of staff training sessions, workshops and continuing professional education, where finding a suitable time for all participants is often difficult. More efficient scheduling could reduce administrative workload and allow healthcare professionals to devote more time to clinical work and patient care.

Although Doodle does not directly contribute to clinical decision-making, it can support effective teamwork by improving communication and coordination. As with any digital platform used in healthcare, confidentiality must be considered carefully. Patient-identifiable information should not be included in meeting invitations or scheduling tools unless the platform complies with healthcare data protection and security requirements.

Linkedln

LinkedIn is a professional social networking platform that enables users to build professional networks, share expertise and access educational content. Unlike many social media platforms, its primary purpose is to support career development, professional learning and the exchange of knowledge. (LinkedIn n.d.)

Continuous learning is an essential part of healthcare because new research findings, technologies and treatment recommendations are introduced regularly. I could use LinkedIn to follow healthcare organisations, professional associations and experts in laboratory medicine, sleep health and respiratory care. This would help me stay informed about current developments and identify educational opportunities such as webinars, online courses and professional conferences.

LinkedIn could also strengthen professional networking by connecting healthcare professionals from different organisations and areas of expertise. Participating in professional discussions and exchanging experiences may provide new perspectives on clinical practice, quality improvement and patient education. Learning from colleagues and sharing evidence-based practices can support both individual professional development and improvements in healthcare services.

In addition to following professional content, LinkedIn could be used to share reliable health information and increase awareness of topics such as sleep health, laboratory diagnostics and CPAP therapy. When publishing professional content, it is essential to maintain patient confidentiality, follow ethical guidelines and ensure that shared information is based on current evidence. Because information shared on social media is not always scientifically reliable, healthcare professionals should evaluate sources critically before applying or sharing them.

By supporting networking, lifelong learning and knowledge exchange, LinkedIn can contribute to professional growth while encouraging collaboration across the healthcare sector. Responsible use, combined with critical evaluation of information and adherence to professional ethics, helps ensure that the platform serves as a valuable complement to evidence-based practice.

Table 1. A good digital application should make work easier, improve communication and provide benefits for both healthcare professionals and patients. Digital competence is an important part of using technology effectively. Healthcare professionals need to understand how applications work, evaluate the reliability of information and use digital tools responsibly. Continuous learning and proper training are essential because healthcare technology is constantly developing.

In my work, data protection and patient confidentiality are especially important. Digital tools must be secure, and patient information must always be handled according to privacy regulations and professional ethical principles. Technology should support professional decision-making, not replace clinical expertise. I believe the most successful digital applications are those that are easy to use, safe and well integrated into everyday work. When used responsibly, digital tools can improve teamwork, support professional development and help provide high-quality, patient-centred care.

Self evaluation

This assignment encouraged me to reflect on my professional practice from a new perspective. Although digital technologies are already an important part of my daily work I gained a broader understanding of how different digital tools can support healthcare work.

Exploring these tools showed me their potential in improving patient education, communication, information access and professional collaboration. At the same time, the assignment reinforced the importance of critical evaluation, professional judgement and evidence-based practice when using digital solutions in healthcare.

I also recognised the growing importance of digital competence in healthcare. Learning about tools such as Miro, Doodle and LinkedIn expanded my understanding of how digital platforms can support teamwork, lifelong learning and the development of healthcare services.

The assignment strengthened my awareness of ethical considerations, especially data protection, patient confidentiality and information reliability. It encouraged me to continue developing my digital skills and remain open to new technologies that can support safe, effective and patient-centred care.

References

ChatGPT n.d.
