My mentors and the residents made the mental health and substance abuse internship place a conducive environment for me. It has been a good feeling from the beginning to the end of internship. I was able to put the theoretical knowledge into practical. I am delighted that I managed to fulfil the goals and objectives planned at the beginning of the training. I would like to thank Lumiar Solina Oy for given me the internship opportunity at their unit. It was a privilege to learn from the head of the unit, employees and from the young people.

LEARNING SKILLS: I have had a good experience learning from my mentor and other professionals from the unit. I am a fast learner who ask questions and seek feedback when I am unsure about something, this approach assisted and increased me in knowledge.

ETHICS COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM

Nursing is a profession which is guided by rules and regulations all nurses must abide by such as: honesty, empathy, integrity, accountability, human dignity and so on. I worked ethically and abide by rules and regulation during the internship period. I was able to work ethically and abide by all rules and regulations with the residents, staff, and the environment generally.

EDUCATION AND TEACHING COMPETENCE

Communication plays an essential role when managing the patients. In most cases, I use basic Finnish language with the patients during my internship, although some of the young people speaks English language which made it easier for me to communicate.

WORKING COMMUNITY COMPETENCE

I have had experience working in Finnish environment before my internship began. In every way, the internship has been a great experience for me. Throughout my internship, I was able to establish positive relationships with the residents, coworkers, mentors, and residents’ relatives. I can state with certainty that during this time, I was able to collaborate with nearly every coworker at least once. Collaborating with diverse coworkers was a pleasant educational experience. In the same way, I get along well with practically every resident, especially the ones I was assigned to.

EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING

Evidence based practice is important for nurses who work in mental health and substance abuse department. Working closely with the boss of the unit who is a psychotherapist gave me an insight on how to handle emotions and reaction after a hard situation with the customers. Using AVEKKI techniques helps patients’ safety when they are aggressive.

CLINICAL NURSING COMPETENCE

Personally, I think the clinical nursing competence in mental health unit is quite different from every other nursing field. The most important intervention for me is creating nurse-client relationship. I gained insights into both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for these conditions.

The last week of the internship is the reflection and summary of my learning from beginning to the end of internship week.
