WEEK 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a pleasure to be back at the unit where I completed my previous internship developing of nursing competencies. But this time, I came for a three-week internship, development of interprofessional nursing care internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This internship comes with different experiences in terms of learning, understanding and fundamental of nursing practice in group home (Rhymakoti). I made plans with my mentor at the start of internship so that I could work closely with her and our residents. Most of our residents are between the ages of 11-18 years old. These residents are traumatic kids, asylum seekers who need support mentally, physically, emotionally and psychologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was given three new patients who just moved to the group home as a case study for my internship, these patients need support in their daily activities and to integrate them into Finnish system. During my first meeting with one of the assigned patients, I noticed redness and heavy itching in the hands of the patient which has caused discomfort on the skin of the patients. Therefore, I helped the patient by applying hydrocortisone cream on the surface of the discomfort to ease the pain. Hydrocortisone cream was put in a small jar for the patient to apply once a day to help cure the redness and itching. I kept a close monitoring on the situation to see the effect of the hydrocortisone, luckily the cream cured the swelling, itching and redness after a couple of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first week, I managed to form a good relationship with the assigned patients by going on a walk together, showing them Kuopio city and playing video games in the group home. Engaging in both outdoor and indoor activities has lit up the mood of the young people and made them feel loved and gradually overcome the traumas they are going through. I also encouraged the patients to use the medicine they brought from their home countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have managed to communicate with my mentor, nurses, social workers and the residents using Finnish language. Personally, the internship environment has helped me develop my language proficiency. I achieved the following in the first week of my internship; working with professionals and multidisciplinary teams, professional skills and asking for feedback from my mentors, guiding and mentoring the patients during the integration process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
