It came with different learning skills which enhanced my theoretical knowledge and practical background in nursing. It was a great privilege and learning experience for me to work for the first time as a substitute nurse during an internship for a mentor. At first, I was nervous but eventually, I managed to follow the nursing procedure and achieve my goals and objectives throughout my internship.

INTERNSHIP ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I have different roles and responsibilities during my internship in the group home, but the main responsibilities were to support young people with mental health problems and traumatic kids. This internship widens my scope in nursing and shows me how different multiprofessional teams such as social-workers, nurses, doctors, dentists and edustaja (young people representative) can collaborate to help young people struggling with mental health problems. The collaboration among the multiprofessionals team impacted the patient health and overall wellbeing.

One of my responsibilities is to provide medication for young people who have terrible nightmares and restlessness at night due to past traumas. I contacted the doctor to discuss the situation with him; the doctor had ordered ketipinor and melatonin to help the dopamine and serotonin of the patient. I started to evaluate and monitor the patient’s restlessness at night by encouraging them to use the prescribed medicine and sleep early at night.

QUALITY AND SAFETY IN SOCIAL AND HEALTHCARE SERVICES

Safety comes first before anything in the group home. Right from the first day of internship, my mentor told me the importance of safety in the unit. I always use safety alarms and keys every day during the internship. I am ready to use my AVEKKI skills to help aggressive patients if needed. I disposed of needles or any sharp objects carefully, avoided being alone with aggressive patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At first, I was stressed and worried about how I could help patients struggling with mental health problems. I developed a nursing-client relationship with the patients, with this idea, young people started to trust and open to me. I then realized the importance of communication by asking frequently what is wrong with the patients, what does the patients want and how I can help.

I had an experience with one of my assigned patients who was stressed mentally after contacting his home country, this patient suddenly started asking for sedative medication. I was confused and contacted my mentor to ask if I could proceed with the sedative medicine. My mentor asked me not to give him the medication and instead discussed with the patient and listened to his explanation behind the sudden request for sedative medicine. Luckily for me, the discussion helped better and lighten up the mood of the patients who did not later get the sedative medicine. This case study serves as another learning experience for me during my internship.

ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALLISM.

During my internship, I adhere to all nursing ethics and act professionally by respecting patient privacy and listening to them when they do not want to take medicine.

I asked for feedback on every step and procedure I took during my internship. This feedback has played an integral role in my internship and my career as a nurse. I was told to perfect my drug calculations and focus on time management and be able to multitask when needed. Therefore, I asked questions when I was unclear about a procedure and revised my drug calculation again. I also use my interprofessional skills when communicating and dealing with patients by making their privacy private. As a nursing student, I gave my opinion during the meetings between the representative, doctor and the social worker. Overall, constant feedback from my mentor has impacted my internship positively.

COMPETENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING

To understand unit procedures, I examined the Mental Health Act. I also followed Terveysportti and the BNF’s best practices. I engaged with different multidisciplinary team such as nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, and representatives (edustaja). I also took part in care decision sessions to enhance my knowledge as a nursing student. When our patients start to have emotional, psychological, or mental problems, my mentor has shown me how to integrate them into the Finnish healthcare system, which may include making an appointment with the doctor, psychiatrist or psychologist depending on the situation. With the help of my mentor, I was able to adequately document on NAPPULA.

Conclusively, the internship at the group home has come with good experience which has increased my knowledge in nursing and social environments. All the internship aims and objectives were accomplished, including enhancing patient privacy, effective communication, while identifying possible protocol development areas and cooperating as a team. Supporting traumatic children and working in the mental health department have improved my professional skills and prepared me for additional roles in the healthcare department.

Attached is my Tyotodistus

WEEK 3 The third and final week of my internship is the summary of my three weeks internship.
