DIGI SOCIETY

We are living in a “Digi Society.” This means our lives and jobs are connected to digital technology every day. This change brings numerous benefits, including working faster and connecting with people more easily. However, it also brings risks regarding privacy. In this post, I will share my experience in the tourism industry in Thailand and discuss how data protection laws affect my work.

My experience: From manual work to social media and online branding

My work journey in Thailand began in 2013 when I worked as an accounting officer at a 4-star hotel. Back then, technology was not very advanced in my workplace. I had to work with a huge amount of paper. Every day, I manually typed guest information into the computer system. It was slow and tiring work.

In 2016, I became a business owner. I opened a small hotel and a swimming pool cafe. This was when the digital world changed my life. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram (IG) were becoming very popular in Thailand. I used them for marketing, and it worked very well. I earned a good income because customers could find me easily online.

However, the digital world changes fast. Social media has become a common tool, and every business uses it. Customers now have access to so much information and many choices, making it difficult for me to stand out. To survive, I had to change my strategy from just “selling” to focusing on “branding.”

The future: Technology in the hotel industry

In the future, I believe digitalization will change the hotel industry completely. Basic tasks will become automatic. We will see robot workers helping as cleaners or waiters. The front desk experience will also change with self-service kiosks and online check-in systems. Guests will use digital door locks on their phones instead of carrying physical keys. Because machines will do these routine jobs, humans must focus on creativity and service. We must use technology to make things convenient, but use our personal touch to make guests feel special.

The Digi Society has changed my career from doing manual paperwork to managing digital marketing and branding. Technology offers great opportunities to grow a business, but we must be responsible. We must use digital tools to improve our work while respecting the privacy and safety of our customers.

Risks and Data Protection (GDPR)

Living in an open digital society has risks. The biggest risk is losing personal data. If a business loses customer data, it can cause big problems. This is why the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is important. Although it is a European law (started in 2016 and applied in 2018), it affects tourism everywhere because we welcome guests from all over the world.

How GDPR affects my work

The data protection laws have both positive and negative effects on my life as a business owner:

Positive Effects: It helps me build trust. When I tell guests that I keep their data safe and private, they feel comfortable staying at my hotel. It also forces me to be organized and only keep the necessary information.

Negative Effects: It creates more work. I have to be very careful with documents and computer systems. I also have to study the laws to make sure I do not make mistakes. Sometimes, this feels like a burden for a small business owner.

AI & ChatGPT

AI is everywhere in today’s world. Learning how to use AI and being able to adapt to it is an important responsibility for humans, especially for people in the workforce. I have tried using ChatGPT myself. I asked about Thailand tourism trends, and it provided up-to-date news and summarized information in bullet points. It even asked whether I wanted data from other sources or help with specific topics, which impressed me at first.

However, I later noticed that some information seemed mixed up, so it is my responsibility to check the accuracy before using the data. Even so, AI services like ChatGPT offer many benefits for searching for information. They are fast, have access to a large amount of data, and are useful tools for generating ideas on many topics. AI also supports education, such as language learning, coding, and summarizing complex theories.

In general, artificial intelligence provides benefits for both individuals and businesses. How useful it is depends on how well we use it. Humans should continue developing their skills, especially soft skills. Creativity and adaptability help people work effectively with AI tools. Human involvement in workplace communication also improves work efficiency.

Self evaluation: What I have learned and what I need to learn more about

During my studies on topics related, I have learned many important ideas about technology and artificial intelligence. These topics helped me understand how technology affects work, society, and daily life. They also helped me reflect on what I know and what I still need to learn.

First, I learned that Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT) play a major role in modern life. Big Data refers to very large amounts of information collected from different sources, while IoT connects everyday devices to the internet. These technologies help organizations improve efficiency and decision-making. However, I would like to learn more about how data is analyzed and how data privacy is protected.

Second, cybersecurity made me aware of the risks of using digital systems. I learned about threats such as hacking, phishing, and data breaches. This topic taught me the importance of protecting personal and organizational data. I still want to learn more about advanced security systems and how companies manage cyber risks.

Third, learning about GDPR and data protection reform helped me understand the importance of privacy. GDPR gives individuals more control over their personal data and forces organizations to be more responsible. I would like to gain more practical knowledge about how GDPR is applied in real workplaces.

Finally, the topic of future visions showed me how technology may change the workplace. Robots, drones, and intuitive AI can improve healthcare, productivity, and communication. However, I would like to learn more about ethical issues and how these technologies may affect jobs.

In conclusion, I learned that technology offers many benefits, but human skills such as creativity, adaptability, and communication remain essential. I aim to continue developing both technical knowledge and soft skills for the future.
