My mentor nurse, has tutored me on several techniques on the various ways to remember the tools used. Also, hand disinfection and sterile equipment been kept sterile has been also the focus of our practice in the first week.

I have been able to scrub in and make couple of mistakes still while wearing the double gloves the easiest way but my mentor nurse has been very helpful in this. i have been able to work aseptically and minimize the feeling of trying to put my hands down wile putting on the sterile gown.

I have been able to assist other scrub nurses in giving them different equipment and tools that could and will be used during the procedures and doing this has also made me feel that i can be trusted by the staff of the ward.

Been a scrub nurse or an operative nurse requires that you gather knowledge of the procedure and what might happen during the procedure and understand the function of everyone who is there as well. Taking of vital signs

Monitoring of vital signs during surgical operation

Medication

Description

During this week i have worked closely with the anesthesia nurse and doctor, and understood the routine of how things are done and the communication route between an anesthesia nurse, anesthesia doctor and other surgical team that makes the procedure move smoothly.

understanding of the vital signs and different parameters for different patients has been explained adequately to me, thereby making me able to follow on every patient that undergoes a certain procedural process.

I was able to follow up on the medication given to each patient and also monitoring the medications, thereby giving the opportunity to act as soon as possible.

i have understood virtually, the most important medications needed for a surgical procedure and know which drug comes first and which helps what in a certain situation.

Feelings :

I have felt much more calm understanding all this and appreciating the significance of why active an anesthesia nurse must be at all times.

Evaluation :

My mentor nurse has given a positive feedback on my willingness to ask questions where i feel lost and ability to understand different situations.

Week 5:

LEARNING SKILLS
In the beginning of the internship i came with an open mind to improve on what i have learnt from school and to embrace the learning skills of professionals in the working field.

ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALITY
I understand that even when a patient is on the surgical table either on general anesthesia or local, the right and privacy of that patient must be respected at all times and also the dignity of the patient.

WORKING SOCIETY COMPETENCE
I have worked and enjoyed working in this environment and the staffs has been cordial and helpful, for this i can say i have grown very well in this field of studies.

I have done my best to follow the working schedule and also tried to do so independently with the help of the each shift head and this has made my internship a success as well.

PATIENT-ORIENTED NURSING CARE
The patients has and its always my first concern and i have ensured to put their concern first before any other, also considering that every patient is different and has an individual need and as such must be treated as an individual.

EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING
I have been able to make research on my own and also read couple of booklets here in the ward given to me by my mentor, also my mentor has explained holistically through the process of been in the anesthesia side or as an instrument nurse and this has helped me grow.

CLINICAL NURSING CARE
I can gladly say that my clinical skills has improved radically and this is a huge thanks to the staffs of the department and especially my mentors for their flexibility and willingness to let me try new things.

I have had the opportunity to try and learn everything at the ward and even more and this is a great tool for the future and shapes my idea of my future as a nurse.

I do believe that my goals were achieved and met my expectations and a big thanks to my mentors.

Goal to be achieved in my next internship.

in my next internship i do hope to work more in Finnish language and also communicate more and more with my mentors.

During your three weeks in scrub nurse duties you have learned:
How to perform surgical hand disinfection and properly put on surgical gown and glowes. How to remain sterile. How to perform basic abdominal surgical site disinfection. How to handle different machines and instruments

You clearly understand the outlines of sterile areas and are able to open packages safely. You have made good observations and questions during your internship. I would like to give you special credit for your consentration while practicing your skills.

In future use your voice and Finnish proudly. Language and communication can only blossom when you practise them =)

  2. Anesthesia mentor Liisa

During your anesthesia weeks you worked as pair of the anesthesia doctor and nurse. Like you already wrote, it was nice to notice that you asked good questions and also if you didn’t quite understood the task you were given. This is important when working in this kind of intensive enviroment which like the surgery room is.

We discussed about medicines and how do they affect. It seemed that you learned the basics of the anesthesia medication. You were also able to tell with little help, how did the medicine affect to the patient. Also, you learned to prepare the basic tools that we need to use during taking care of the anesthesia.

You observed the patients breathing in the beginning of the anesthesia. You noticed, when patient stopped breathing and then you started ventilating the patient. It’s important to first check the patient and then the monitors. Monitoring can be difficult, especially when you have to wait a little, before making decissions. Your style to work was calm and you did think before you acted. Especially when you want to run the anesthesia smoothly and patient safely, it’s good to give the patient a little time before making a lot of changes. Otherwise the anesthesia will be like a rollercoaster.

I also want to cheer you to speak finnish more bravely, because that’s how you master it. And your basic finnish was good! Thank you Kingsley. 🙂
