WHO AM I
My name is Kingsley from Nigeria and am enthusiastic about travelling, caring for people, and putting smiles on the faces of people in the field of health care by always supporting and caring for them the right way.
I have heard couple of Nursing internship at the university of Nicosia as a Nursing student before I moved to Finland to get a Masters degree in Toxicology and Environmental health risk Assessment. So the working life and daily practice of a student Nurse is not new to me but I believe every place comes with a new experience. I have also done my first internship at Attendo Vänrikki, my medical Internship at the cancer department, NICU, Aistinelin ja pehmytosakirrgian leikkaysyksikkö and worked as a care giver at Attendo Saaristo, Pratical nurse at Harjula Osasto 1, Puijonlaakso osasto 1, levasen dementia osasto and also kotihoito.
WHAT KIND OF A LEARNER AM I
I see myself to be an active learner and also, I really like to learn by practicing. Am quick to ask questions when am either confused about a task or an application I do not understand.
LEARNING SKILLS.
I am eager to gather more skills from the clinical practice and also achieving the goals that have set aside for this internship, such as, implementation of safe medication practices in mental health and addiction, promotion of mental health and sobriety of clients from different cultural backgrounds, identification of the most important collaborators of the internship employer organization and work in a multi-professional team, mentor patients, patient groups, family members, fellow students or personnel and by working accordingly to the principles of professional ethics and analyze the importance of attitudes and emotions in mental health and addiction care through the application of what I have studied in school and with the experience I have gathered in the years, also by listening, watching, and taking corrections from my mentor at practice all the time.
I hope to achieve this goals by applying all evidence-based practice through my period of internship with the help of my mentor nurse and other nurses at the workplace.
TEACHING AND GUIDANCE:
As a nursing assistant, I have practiced guiding patients and their relatives through various ways of communication skills. I have been guided with the use of various aseptic techniques , patient guidance, catheter insertion, medical interventions and various pediatric intervention.
in my previous internship i have been told that i pay attention to details and very willing to take up new responsibilities and am not scared to ask questions when needed, so this been noticed by my previous mentors i will like to capitalize on that and achieve the following goals.
ETHICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PROFESSIONALITY:
Level of competence: I acquainted myself with the values and principles of nursing care/profession. I am easily accessible to new people and my strength is being social in new situations and try to calm the situation down in an unfriendly environment. “
How to achieve goals: “I want to become a professional who, despite the patient’s behavior, remains self-contained and professional. This is why I want to be involved in a variety of challenging listening situations. I need realistic feedback about my working with patient from my mentor nurse and other nurses” especially on the spot in other to help me improve and avoid such mistakes again.

CLINICAL SKILLS:
At the school I have been training to work ergonomically, i have also gained experience from previous internship like the cancer department in KYS,NICU and surgical department and also in the home care services in Attendo. My pediatric experience comes as a result of several simulation classes that i have acquired during simulated nursing scenarios and procedures in school, I have done my possible best to follow all procedures set aside by the teachers and ethically.
I hope to improve on my clinical skills by following the protocols in the ward, mentor advice and also remembering my lessons in school, i will also remember to follow adequate patient care and follow all ethical procedures. Also, I hope my mentor nurse to guide me how to work and support me ergonomically in different situations and give me feedback at all times.”
I know how to guide the patient in preparing for their daily activities, giving of medication, ergonomy, AVEKKI and also understanding and explaining of medication to patients and relatives because I have already practiced it in skill lab at school and previous internship.
However, I have never guided either patient’s or the patient’s relatives, and I can’t really say in which matters they may need guidance at this internship. So I don’t think I know how to guide other family members when it comes to mental health or its correspondence.
Means and methods to reach the goals:
”I hope that my mentor/preceptor and the tutoring teacher of this practice will show me where to look for additional information suitable for guiding patient´s family members and how to handle individual situation in a professional way. I believe that there will be such guidance situations, I will participate in
them together with my mentor and thus learn more.”
One way i wish to achieve this is by asking if i can have my own patients and i can plan their care, implement and assess, in other to crate a care plan.
CULTURAL COMPETENCE: I plan to handle all cultural sensitivity, diversity issues with both patients and patients´ families in relation to using of substances, immigration, religion matters and all possible situation i find myself in. I will accomplish this by always keeping an open mind and empathetic attitude towards everyone in a professional way.
multi-professional Competence: I hope to interact with all forms of multi professional team members by acknowledging our various Interaction skills, peer work, team work through the use of proper networking.

In this internship, for example, aseptic skills, cannula insertion or catheterization are not practiced. The main goal is to practice nurse patient relationship and recognize psychological symptoms in patients, make treatment plans and interact with patients.

Hi Kingsley! You had made some changes to the blog as I requested. I accept your blog now, but in the future pay attention to what exactly are the goals and competencies of this internship period. Write future texts ( mid-and final evaluation and reflections) with them in mind. The evaluation form can be found on Moodle.
In particular, clinical skills are now very different from previous internships. Also show here on the blog that you understand what clinical skills are in mental health and substance abuse treatment work. For example, nurse patient relationship, psychoeducation and various functional methods are important clinical skills. Knowing and understanding the legislation is also important. For example, what does the M1 referral mean? What about Involuntary treatment or Isolation? Guidance, on the other hand, is being close to everyday things in the wards. Patients are guided, for example, in relation to eating, washing or taking medicine.
