the patients and medication distribution

learning from my mentor nurse

Description :

My mentor nurse and I was with different clients to assess them and take care of them and I was also asked to do the same and take some responsibilities in understanding measurement of different patients, understanding what it means to be breastfeed and to be feed by NG tube .

Feeling :

While i was with the patient i felt empathy for the client ,I was worried about the fragility of the babies and was concerned about not hurting or braking them but my mentor nurse gave me the confidence to be able to hold and access them.

Evaluation:

On evaluation , my mentor Nurse was with me and said it was a good one.

Analysis:

on my reflection while we were with the patient i was able to understand that even if the parents are there we still need to talk to the babies like they understanding everything we are saying and doing and also carrying the family along with every step of the way.

Conclusion:

my conclusion, i appreciate the immediate feedback and support from my mentor nurse and how they are willing to help me grow professionally, also, i think that as time goes on i will gain more confidence and more know how on how to handle them.

Action plan:

My action plan in the future is that I will be away to take on more responsibilities with the monitoring of my mentor nurse

Week treatment.

Understanding the different incubation reasons and why babies come into the ward with infections

Description :

Different babies who might not be premature visit the ward due to infections and other reasons and also my mentor helped me properly understanding the different reasons for this and also how to go about them.

giving of the sinivalo is an important act of the reduction or stabilization of the bilirubin level in premature and my mentor nurse introduced me to this and also how to utilize them and how to also read the readings.

i have learnt different techniques on how to carry and position the baby in other to make them feel comfortable and reduce their pain to barest minimum without needing to interrupt sleep or rest.

Feeling :

i feel much comfortable at this moment and glad that both my mentor nurse are giving me the guidance and opportunity i need to carry out this process and my questions are been answered when i ask.

Evaluation:

my mentor nurse has commended my effort and i appreciate the guidance

Analysis:

my reflection for this week, is the ability to handle the babies and care for them holistically is achievable and confidently and feedback helped properly.

Conclusion:

is that with confidence it is able to come out one shell and perform my duties properly.

Action plan:

I plan to continue to learn and focus on the pathway which i and my mentor nurse has spoken about and ensure i can start to achieve them from the third week

Week 3.

giving of medication under supersion

bathing under the sink under suupervision of mentor nurse

understanding the different technique in feeding NICU patients

understanding the difference between the parent and the baby as a patient in the ward

going to the delivery room to understand how babies are transffered to NICU ward

resuscitation training

Description:

in the third week i have understood the different timing of when and why we have to give the medications are does specific timing as interaction of drugs are very important in the human body.

bathinfg the baby under the sink has given me a broadeer view of difference between lappupesu and sink washing, as i have seen and understood that most babies tend to be calm and enjoy the feeling of the flow of warm water on their body.

feeding is a very important role with NICU babies and also for babies in general but what is more important is feeding properly and with the right direction. with the help of my mentor nurse she has directed me and guided me in how to feed, timing of when to let the baby breath using diferent technique and i know this is helpful for my future career.

my mentor nurse has been able to make me understand how we treat parents in relation to how we treat our patients (which are NICU babies), i have understood in as much as we treat the family as a whole entity, our major concern and priority is our patientthe NICU baby.

Feeling:

honestly that the pressure in healthcare system is real and more hands needs to be on deck.

i do feel good in my progress and although ii have had some set back, i feel that more time here, will make do more, as i really want to do more.

Action:

i plan on updating myself with various articles and research on how to better the life of NICU patients and also to help the bonding of parents and babies go smoothly.

Week 4

surgical room for tracheostomy change

preparation of baby to the surgical room

Giving of Medication under supervioin through PICC and CVK

Observation of minor eye surgery (retinopathy)

Medication room

Description

The fourth week was a change in normal NICU ward responsibilities, as i had time to try various things and also see something totally different from the ward. i was given the opportunity to go with one of our babies to the surgical room, to observe how a new tracheostomy is been replaced in such type of environment and as such giving me a proper understanding of precision and timing when it comes to dealing with prematures.

I assisted in the preparation of a baby for surgery and also taking the baby to the surgical room with other health care professionals and assisted in returning the baby back to ICU ward of NICU and preparation of post operative surgery for the baby in our ICU room.

i having been able to give medication through PICC and CVK under supervision of nurses and this has gone properly well, especially because i have learnt from their method s of how it is done and also applications from my previous internship.

in this week one of the most intense thing was the retinopathy, as i also witnessed how that was done and i never imagined that such type of procedures are been carried out on babies despite knowing that this are one of the abnormalities associated in the retinal vascular development that occurs in premature infants.

I have been in the medication room and assisted in medication calculation and i have seen how precise and accurate things are done, also the sensitivity of how a little mistake could be hazardous and disaster to baby.

Feelings :

the whole situation has been very new, interesting little like in the movies especially in the surgery room but as well, i love the experience.

I understand on a daily bases , more and more the very importance of aseptic method in healthcare system and especially while dealung with delicate babies.

Evaluation :

overall i will say i did good and the nurses i was with where really helpful and has impacted so much knowledge into me.

Analysis:

my reflection for this week is that things change very quickly and i should be ready to evolve as things change as well.

Conclusion:

I have been able to handle this period profssionally and without panic and i do feel like this is an amazing experience.

Week 5:

LEARNING SKILLS
In the beginning of the internship i came with an open mind to improve on what i have learnt from school and to embrace the learning skills of professionals in the working field.

ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALITY
knowing the right of the child and respecting the family was a vital part of the internship and knowing this before the internship helped me understand the process and respectit moe in work practice.

WORKING SOCIETY COMPETENCE
I have worked and enjoyed working in this environment and the staffs has been coordial and helpful, for this i can say i have grown very well in this field of studies.

I have done my best to follow the working schedule and also tried to do so independently with the help of the each shift head and this has made my internship a success as well.

PATIENT-ORIENTED NURSING CARE
The patients has and its always my first concern and i have ensured to put their concern first before any other, also considering that their families are a huge source of support and that means handling the situatuation holistically.

EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION-MAKING
I have been able to make research on my own and also read couple of booklets here in the ward given tome by my mentor, this has helped me grow.

my goal is to see and know how to make every situation beter for every child and i think that this has helped me want to treat every baby with EBN method.

CLINICAL NURSING CARE
I can gladly say that my clinical skills has improved radically and this is a huge thanks to the staffs of NICU and especially my mmentor for her flexibility and her willing to let me try new things.

i have taken part in resuscitation simulation with my mentor and learned how to use NEOPUFF ventilator and changed from Cpap to optiflow. i feel so confident this days and i feel like my mentor has confidence in me as and this helped my morale as well.

i have been the opportunity to try and learn everything at the ward and even more and this is a great tool for the future.

I do believe that my goals were acheived and met my expectations and a big thanks to my mentor.

Goal to be achieved in my next internship.

in my next internship i do hope to work more in finnish language and also communicate more and more with my mentor.

week 1 The things i did during my first week
