It is a part of our job to teach and guide them with Kela benefits and applications. Despite it being my job, I find the Kela forms and requirements to be complicated at times.

I am privileged to not have needed to be in closer contact with Kela in my personal life. My family gets child allowance for our child from Kela. Previously I received student allowance during my bachelor’s degree studies and pregnancy allowance and parental allowance when I was pregnant and stayed at home with our son.

I have an European health care card already from before and did not need to apply for one as a part of this assignment.

OMAKANTA

Usually when using Omakanta I tend to access the page with my phone from Kanta.fi and log in with my banking info. It is important to access this type of pages from the actual website instead of for example googling “Omakanta” as there are many scammers who pay for their pages to appear as ads on the top of the search results and try to steal people personal and banking information.

I use Omakanta to check the documentation of me and my sons’ appointments in healthcare and at times to request renewal of prescriptions. Sometimes I find it difficult to find the right information from Omakanta and I feel like they should develop the information on the page to be more easily accessible.

At my work we also guide the youths on how to use Omakanta for their needs.

PENSION

For my pension I entered the Keva page as advised, but they did not have the information about my pension collected so far. After some research I found tyoelake.fi from which I was redirected to varma.fi due to my workplace having their employment pension insurance service from them. I had not looked into my pension before and hence was not sure about where to actual find it from.

So far, I have collected 576 euros of pension per month. My lowest possible age for receiving pension is estimated to be 67 years and 10 months. At that time the pension I would be receiving is estimated to be 2651,66 euros. If I work until I am 70 years old, I will get an estimated pension of 3064 euros per month. Unfortunately, with the cuts to the pension system and constantly rising age of retirement I am unsure if I will ever be able to receive pension or not.

ONLINESTORES

I tend to do a lot of my shopping, hotel bookings, travel plans etc. online. I find it easy to collect and compare information from different pages to find the best options. When visiting new digital shops and buying products online I pay a lot of attention to the customer reviews of both the page and the products they offer. I try to make conscious decisions on my purchases while making sure the online store is safe for a consumer to use.

AN APPLICATION RELATED TO MY WORK

As previously mentioned, we use many of the digitalized services at my job. Or rather focus on teaching and guiding the youths in using such services as Kela, Omakanta, Opintopolku and Työmarkkinatori. As the youths turn 18, they must take more responsibility for their life, and we try to practice the demands of an independent life beforehand as much as possible.

For the daily documentation at my job we use Nappula (myneva.nappula) which is a recording and reporting software especially meant for the needs of child welfare and disability services. I find the software mostly easy to use but I have no experience with different reporting software so I cannot compare it extensively.

DIGITALIZATION AND DIGITAL GAP

Finland is considered to be one of the most digitally advanced countries in the world with its strong digital infrastructure, extensive use of digitalized public services and high internet penetration. The citizens can access most government services online through secure digital identification systems. Having public services offered digitally makes the services more easily available and efficient for most people.

Unfortunately, there are certain groups that struggle with the ongoing digitalization and fall victims to the growing digital gap. Groups especially affected are the elderly, immigrants, people with disabilities and low-income individuals. The people who can’t use digital services can struggle with accessing public services, social exclusion and reduced ability to manage their health. These issues can affect the society, for example by increasing inequality, reducing the trust towards public institutions and weakening democratic participation. The EU recognizes digital gap as a challenge in their digitalization program as well. As a way to reduce the digital gap in Finland they offer for example digital support services, training programs and alternative service channels. They have also set requirements for accessibility in public services.

DIGITAL COMPETENCE TEST

The test was interesting and covered digital knowledge from multiple different perspectives. I am quite happy with my results, and I feel like they reflect my skills realistically. There are things to still improve and learn about as I am not an educated expert in the field but overall, I’m quite fluent in the digital environment due to personal interests. The average percentage of my skills came out to about 69%.

SELF-EVALUATION

It was interesting to investigate different digital solutions and pages from a research perspective rather than just visiting them casually as a part of one’s daily life. The chosen topics offered a wide range of perspectives and online applications to look into. My favorite out of the given topics was Digitalization and digital gap. I found it very useful to explore and see the perspective of people who lack the fluency to function in the digital world we live in. It was also fascinating to read about the experiences of my fellow students from their blog pages. There were multiple different kinds of approaches towards the assignment which resulted in a broad spectrum of viewpoints.

COMMENTED ARTICLES

I commented on blog posts by Aneel Kumar (https://blogi.savonia.fi/aneelkumar/digi-citizen/), Aino Marku (https://blogi.savonia.fi/ainomarku/digi-citizen/) and Hanna Iljin (https://blogi.savonia.fi/hannailjin/digi-citizen/).

KELA At my job I work with youths who are about to gain their independence from the foster care system as they turn 18.
