During this time, technological development has significantly transformed the industry, and this change has not been temporary but continuous and accelerating. Digitalization is no longer just about individual systems or tools; it has fundamentally changed the logic of business. It affects how decisions are made, how customers are approached, and what kind of value is created. At the same time, it raises an important question: are organizations keeping up with this change, or is technology already guiding us more than we guide it?

One of the most significant changes in my work has been the shift toward a data-driven approach. In the past, decision-making relied heavily on experience and limited information, but today data is constantly collected, analyzed, and utilized from almost all business activities. Customer behavior, purchasing patterns, and online traffic are closely monitored, enabling more accurate forecasting, targeting, and business development. This development supports the ideas of Kenneth Cukier (2014), who emphasizes that large datasets allow us to identify new patterns and connections that would not be visible otherwise (Kenneth Cukier 2014; https://www.ted.com/talks/kenneth_cukier_big_data_is_better_data). However, it also raises a critical question: to what extent is decision-making still based on human understanding, and at what point do we begin to rely too heavily on algorithm-driven insights?

From the customer perspective, digitalization is most visible in the growth of e-commerce and the ease of services. Today, almost any product can be ordered directly to one’s home regardless of time or location, which has significantly changed customer expectations. The global growth of e-commerce has been rapid and is expected to continue in the future (Statista 2025; https://www.statista.com/topics/871/online-shopping/ ). At the same time, the role of physical stores has evolved. Traditional checkout processes are decreasing as self-service checkouts, mobile payments, and automated payment systems become more common. Payment methods have diversified significantly, making transactions faster and more seamless. However, this also raises the question: what happens to human interaction and personal service in this transformation?

Digitalization has also significantly transformed marketing and customer experience. Social media has become a key platform where companies interact with customers and build relationships. At the same time, entirely new professions have emerged, such as social media influencers, whose role in marketing continues to grow. Through data, companies can offer personalized advertising, recommendations, and content tailored to individual customer behavior, which has been shown to improve customer engagement and experience. However, this development also raises concerns about privacy and ethical use of data. In addition, the boundaries within social media are becoming increasingly blurred: are we interacting with real people, influencers, or algorithm-created — even AI-generated — digital personas?

The impact of digitalization extends beyond individual organizations and affects society as a whole. European Commission highlights in its Digital Decade strategy that the goal is to create a human-centered, sustainable, and inclusive digital society. The strategy emphasizes the development of digital skills, infrastructure, business digitalization, and accessible digital services (European Commission 2025; https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/europes-digital-decade). This demonstrates that digitalization is not only a competitive factor for companies but also a fundamental part of broader societal transformation.

Future Ideas and Development

Looking ahead, the importance of digitalization will continue to grow, and its impact will become even more visible in both working life and everyday life. In particular, artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics are reshaping the nature of work. Routine tasks are increasingly automated, while work becomes more focused on analysis, problem-solving, and creativity (McKinsey 2021; https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/future-of-work/the-future-of-work-after-covid-19). This also raises an important question: what skills will be essential in the future, and how can organizations support continuous learning?

In retail, this development will lead to more accurate demand forecasting, automated supply chains, and highly personalized customer experiences. Artificial intelligence can anticipate customer needs even before a purchase is made and offer tailored solutions, making the customer journey more seamless and individualized. However, this also leads to a critical reflection: to what extent are customers making their own decisions, and at what point are choices being subtly guided by algorithms?

Marco Annunziata (2013) describes this transformation as part of the industrial internet, where intelligent systems, machines, and humans work together (Marco Annunziata 2013; https://www.ted.com/talks/marco_annunziata_welcome_to_the_age_of_the_industrial_internet). In this environment, systems do not only collect data but also analyze it in real time and support decision-making. While this increases efficiency, it also requires new competencies and a deeper understanding of technology.

Digitalization is also transforming how work is organized. Remote work and digital environments enable more flexible, location-independent work, which can improve work-life balance. However, this flexibility also introduces challenges related to communication, collaboration, and constant connectivity. Where should the boundary between work and personal life be drawn when work can be done anytime and anywhere?

At the same time, it is important to recognize the challenges of digitalization. The increasing use of data raises concerns about privacy, cybersecurity, and ethics. Furthermore, it is essential to ensure that digitalization does not increase inequality, but instead allows all user groups to access and benefit from digital services equally. This requires both technological development and user-centered design that takes into account different needs and capabilities.

This image was created by providing a prompt to the open version of ChatGPT, instructing it to generate a visual representation of digitalization in retail and business development.

Risks of an Open Digital Society and the Role of GDPR

While digitalization creates significant opportunities for efficiency, innovation, and improved services, it also brings risks that need to be critically examined. As digital services become more integrated into everyday life and working environments, large amounts of personal data are constantly collected, processed, and shared across different systems and platforms. This raises important concerns related to data misuse, privacy violations, cybersecurity threats, and ultimately, trust. The more digital our environment becomes, the more essential it is to ask: how much data is too much, and who is really in control of it?

One of the most important responses to these challenges is the General Data Protection Regulation, which came into force in 2016 and has been applied since 2018. The regulation aims to strengthen individuals’ rights regarding their personal data and ensure that organizations handle data in a transparent, secure, and responsible manner. According to GDPR principles, organizations should only collect necessary data, protect it appropriately, and clearly communicate how it is used (GDPR.EU 2026; https://gdpr.eu/what-is-gdpr/). In many ways, GDPR has set a common framework for responsible data practices across Europe.

From my own perspective, GDPR is a visible and essential part of daily work. In my workplace, compliance with data protection regulations is taken very seriously, and regular training is organized to ensure that employees understand and follow the requirements in practice. This continuous learning helps maintain awareness and reduces the risk of unintentional errors. At the same time, it supports a culture where data protection is not seen merely as a legal obligation, but as a shared responsibility embedded in everyday work. This raises an interesting point: is compliance driven by regulation alone, or has it genuinely become part of organizational values?

GDPR has brought several positive effects to both working life and society. One of the most significant benefits is increased transparency and strengthened customer trust. Individuals are more aware of their rights and have greater control over their personal data. For organizations, this has meant improved data management practices, clearer processes, and more structured ways of handling information. In many ways, GDPR has encouraged companies to adopt more ethical and responsible approaches to data usage, which is increasingly important in a digital economy where data is a key asset.

However, GDPR also introduces challenges. From a business perspective, compliance can increase administrative workload and require significant resources. Processes such as documentation, consent management, and system updates can be time-consuming and complex. In fast-moving environments like retail, where data plays a central role in analytics and personalization, strict regulation can sometimes slow down development or limit how data can be utilized. This creates a balance that organizations must constantly manage: how to remain innovative while also being fully compliant.

When reflecting on discussions and blog posts written by other students, similar observations emerge across different fields. Many highlight the importance of trust, ethical thinking, and clear processes in digital environments. At the same time, it becomes evident that digital solutions can introduce new types of risks if they are not carefully designed and implemented. These shared insights reinforce my own view that GDPR is not only about regulation, but a fundamental element in building safe, reliable, and trustworthy digital services.

This image was created by providing a prompt to the open version of ChatGPT, instructing it to generate a visual representation of the risks of an open digital society and the role of GDPR.

Reflection on Using ChatGPT in My Field

As digitalization continues to reshape working life, it is also natural to explore how artificial intelligence can support everyday work and decision-making. In this context, I tested ChatGPT by asking several questions related to my field, retail business development and digitalization. The topics included how digitalization is transforming retail, the role of data in decision-making, and how technology can be used to improve customer experience.

Overall, the responses provided by ChatGPT were clear, well-structured, and relevant. The answers covered key themes such as data-driven decision-making, personalization of customer experience, and the role of digital platforms in business development. In many cases, the responses were aligned with commonly recognized theories and practices, which indicates that artificial intelligence can provide a solid general understanding of complex topics and serve as a useful starting point for further analysis.

At the same time, it became evident that the responses remained quite general in nature. They lacked deeper context and organization-specific insight, which are often essential in practical business development work. ChatGPT does not have access to real-time data or internal company information, which limits its ability to provide tailored or highly practical solutions. In addition, the rapidly evolving nature of digital business means that not all information can be fully up to date, which further emphasizes the need for critical evaluation of AI-generated content.

Another limitation relates to the nature of artificial intelligence itself. While ChatGPT can process and generate information efficiently, it does not understand situations in the same way humans do. It cannot fully interpret complex organizational dynamics, human interactions, or tacit knowledge, all of which play a significant role in decision-making and development work. This highlights the importance of combining technological tools with human expertise rather than relying on them independently.

Despite these limitations, I see strong potential in the use of artificial intelligence in my field. ChatGPT can support idea generation, help structure information, and provide quick overviews of different topics. It can also enhance efficiency in everyday tasks, especially in digital business environments where large amounts of information need to be processed quickly. When used alongside human expertise, artificial intelligence can become a valuable tool that supports decision-making and continuous learning.

Self-Assessment

Working on this assignment has deepened my understanding of the role of digitalization both in my own field and in society more broadly. I have learned to approach digitalization from a more comprehensive perspective, and in particular, the importance of data has become much more concrete. I now better understand how central data is in decision-making, in developing customer experience, and in creating competitive advantage in today’s business environment.

As part of this learning process, I familiarized myself with the course orientation materials, including videos and written content, which provided a solid foundation for understanding the topic. In addition, I actively searched for further information from different sources to gain a broader perspective on the impacts of digitalization. Reading other students’ blog posts and engaging with the related discussions also offered valuable insights from different industries and brought forward practical examples of how digitalization is visible in everyday work and life.

Throughout the assignment, I aimed to combine theoretical perspectives from the course with current knowledge and my own professional experience in retail business development. In my view, I was able to respond to the assignment requirements quite well. I examined the impact of digitalization in my own field, explored future developments, and evaluated the risks and opportunities of an open digital society. This process also helped me reflect on how digitalization is not limited to one industry but affects a wide range of professions in similar ways.

Reading and commenting on other students’ blog texts highlighted how shared many of these challenges and opportunities are across different sectors. At the same time, it strengthened my understanding of the importance of user-centered thinking, accessibility, and the human perspective in developing digital solutions. These aspects are essential when aiming to create services that are not only efficient but also meaningful and inclusive.

Overall, I found this assignment both interesting and insightful. It represents only a small part of a much broader topic, but it has helped me build a stronger foundation for understanding digitalization and its role in shaping the future of work and society.

My thoughts on other blogs

DIGI SOCIETY

Digi Society

DIGI SOCIETY

Digitalization in Retail and Business Development Digitalization has been a central part of my career, especially over the past decade, as I have been working in retail business development.
