DIGI SOCIETY

DIGITALIZATION
I was born in the 80s and landline telephones and televisions were the only devices that resembled digitalization at that time. There were two channels on the television, and later the MTV channel brought The Bold and the Beautiful and Ostos-Tv to our home in a remote area. We kept in touch with friends through letters. In the library, borrowing took place with the library card number, which the library employee wrote on the note on the back cover of the borrowed book. Nowadays, when doing business in the library, you don’t even see library workers, when everything is handled by machines themselves, from borrowing to returning.

When I lived in a remote area, the parents trusted and believed that the children would manage and learn to become independent. I got my own cell phone when I came of 18 age. The computer came to our home when I was 15 years old, and its use was very limited. At school we learned ATK, how to use a computer. We saved our information on a floppy disk and later came memory sticks. Digitization has therefore changed enormously since my own childhood and youth. My own children sometimes can’t understand how we get along without cell phones.

My work is in early childhood education and the development of digitalization can be seen there as well. IPads have become tools for pedagogical documentation in our operations, and the basics of coding are learned with the help of various robots. There have been various programs for recording data and storing documents. Monitoring and recording children’s daily care times have their own applications that collect information about the need for early childhood education. In my opinion, all these applications and programs are aids for carrying out our work as digitalization changes. However, there are still no robots that would raise and guide children in early childhood education. Could robots be the answer to of employees in the field of early childhood education?

GDPR
According to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), people can better manage their personal data and companies benefit from a level playing field. Harmonized data protection legislation is important in order to guarantee the basic right of individuals to protect their personal data and to enable the development of the digital economy and to enhance the fight against crime and terrorism. According to data protection legislation, the protection of children’s data is ensured in my work. As a staff, we attend Navisec’s information security training. I think it is good that everyone’s right to protect personal data is taken into account. Today, logins with personal data are needed in many cases. Digitalization makes everyday life and managing things easier. I often wonder how safe my personal data is when logging into various functions on the phone. Andy Yen’s and James Lyne’s videos made us think about the security of personal data, for example the security of e-mail messages. How easy it is to create different viruses and get information. The package you’re waiting for has arrived message flashes on the screen and when you open it, you’ve already given your information.

SELF-ASSESSMENT
I have started my own blog for the first time. The choice of study course made me think about my skills. I read a lot of different blogs and I’ve been thinking about what it would be like to be one of the blog administrators. So I’m on the verge of a new thing. Digitization evokes many kinds of thoughts. It enables the smoothness of everyday life in many matters in a family with children, but it also evokes negative feelings. The digitization materials provided topics for the report on safety and the development of our environment.

I commented Huttunen Roosa’s and Kivekäs Paula’s blogs.

    Hi Mari!
I was also born in the 80s and had the same life as you have described. Interesting to analyze and see how the life has changed in so many areas. All these changes brought a lot of good things to the society, but in the same time challenges and risks, such as issues related to social privacy, SoMe dependencie and Cybercrime. Let’s see all this digitalization will affect our kids who haven’t seen life without digital tools.

    Hello Mari!
I loved to read about your memories back in the old days, that’s what i did in my first assignment, too! Nowadays the kids are diginatives, but i wonder do they teach them, for example, cyber security or some kind of media literacy in school, since most of them use smartphones all day?
