My field off expertise and experience so far..
As a laborant and biomedical technologist I think the most visible thing at my daily work has been seeing the development in automation and robotics. Currently I work ”with” a liquid handling robot and I had to learn a little bit programming to be able handle the coming challenges and to make sure the robot can be reprogrammed if needed. Programming skills wasn’t in my mind when I started studying in 2006.
I think in the future my work will be more and more about handling robotics and automation instead of doing things, like pipeting, manually. Digitalisation is also about changing the way we think, how we can do things more efficiently and more economically by using new technology. I think there will be ways to do my job, that I can’t yet even imagine.
Digital society
In general I think the digitalisation is a two way road. If I want to use for example Google maps (for free!), I give return some information about my location for Google to use (and to sell forward). Also if I use my green S-card, it collects my shopping habits. Before only the organization used the data, but now I can also see how I use my money, and I think both wins. We can see the same data, but we just use and utilize it differently.
I think this is the thing that also scares people. What kind of information can I give about me, without the feel of giving up my privasy? The general data protection regulation gives a little help with that. The regulation ensures that you can manage the data what organisation have on you. But I also think that the GDPR is not known commonly enough. Organisations must comply it, but how common people utilize the regulation?
Self evaluation
About digitalisation I think I’ll never know enough. One video of the course said that technology renews itself every two years. I have learned that digitalisation is here and I must be open to it and try to understand. As shown in videos, researchers have many inventions ready to come into everyday life soon.
I read and commented on Jaana’s site and Annu’s blog:
Hi Mia,
what an interesting experience you’ve had with your everyday job and how much it has changed since 2006. I agree, robotics and automation have increased and will increase very fast soon in all fields. And you’re right on criticising data collection from Google Maps, customer loyalty programmes etc. I receive every month a summary from Google Maps detailing every journey I have made during the previous month. It’s scary to see how accurate and spot-on the information is. Maybe the only option to go fully incocgnito would be to leave the smartphone home, but it’s tricky since I always need it when it’s not with me…
