For this mid internship evaluation, I have been able improve my skills in perioperative nursing and I can apply theory and skill lab training to real life situations. I make research in advance before surgery and request feedback and actively seek where to improve.

CLINICAL COMPETENCE: PREOPERATIVE NURSING
I understand that patient needs to be assessed, prepared for surgery and checked to know if patient overall health condition is suitable for their surgery.
CLINICAL COMPETENCE: INTRAOPERATIVE NURSING
I spend at least 1 hour of my time to go over my notes and make online research.
I know instrument and materials needed to intubate a patient. I know different medicines given to patients and their pharmacodynamics. I know how to intubate a patient, measure and maintain patient vital signs , I know how to set and start a ventilator and anaesthesia monitor , I have cannulated a client . I have administered oxygen mask and I know how to interpret surgical patient vitals through ABCDE approach.
I also now the attributes, importance, and roles of an anaesthesia nurse.
CLINICAL COMPETENCE: POSTOPERATIVE NURSING
I understand that monitoring patient vitals and securing breathing and maintaining fluid balance and documentation are the important nursing interventions for a postoperative nursing.
EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING AND DECISION MAKING
Under supervision, I have documented patient medicines used during anaesthestia and during surgery. I am able to make use of evidence based data .
GUIDANCE AND EDUCATION COMPETENCE
I am able to introduce myself to patient when I meet them and I am able to guide and support a patient who had local anaesthesia back to the reception after a successful surgery.
QUALITY AND SAFETY OF SOCIAL AND HEALTH CARE SERVICES
I know the responsible role in maintaining data security and patient data protection.
I have also performed medication fluid therapy under supervision.

you have reflected your learning according to competencies.
You spent the two first weeks with the anesthetic nurses. You have been able to monitor and assess (under supervision) vital signs of the patient during anesthesia and surgery. You have given the patients iv. drugs and understand the basic drugs needed. Remember to pay attention to aseptic and if there is e.g. some contamination, it is very important to notice and acknowledge the mistake.
You have been active in searching data, if there has been unclear or new issues for you – very good. Guiding the patients has been quite challenging due to language, but you had now understood the importance of learning the language. And you have learned already and been using the words and sentences you know – very good!
When you are communicating in a team, it is highly important that everybody understands the information given and they are honest if they don’t understand. It is very important for you to “speak aloud” so that your tutor nurses will find out the level of your understanding.

I agree with Suvi Aura. Its good that you find information and are intrested in anethesia. As an anesthetic nurse you need to read lots of liturature and think how you can use learned information in real life situations. There are also lots of situations that are not from book and you need to think more how do you act to make the patients treatment right. Two weeks are short time of period in anesthesia.
Maybe some things to prove:
-aseptics (when do you need gloves and when you need just to use handsanitiser). This is good thing to learn because this knowledge is needed everywhere you might work as a nurse.
– skills of preparing drugs, how to use your hands in a way that you get things done asepticaly and faster. This is a skill that you learn by doing. You dont get all the medicine from the ampulla if you dont turn the ampula upside down. Eye-hand-co-operation.
– Also that you ask if you dont understand. I can see this also when a new nurse comes to OR. They might listen but asking things that they dont understand is sometimes missing. Even I ask daily things i wonder about anestesia because new situations comes nearly daily. Its important to understand whats happening and why we do things how we do.
Patients suprise anesthesia nurses and doctors time after time. Patients conditions vary and you never can know for sure what will happen. So its important to think all things that can happen and think in your head how would i act? What would I do if this happens? What medicine would I need? But this is also something you learn by doing and facing situations. Time after time you learn. Its one of the most important things in nursing : intrest to learn, want to learn and understand.
