I work in the neonatal intensive care unit at Kuopio University Hospital. Intensive care for newborns is special medical care. There are many different meters and devices at work that measure and monitor vital signs. The department has an alarm system that can be used to call for additional help if necessary. Every nurse has a phone from which the patient’s vital signs can be viewed in real time and the patient’s alarms are received. Digital applications are used daily in a nurse’s work.
In the ward, patient information is entered into the patient information system, which is the intensive care system Clinisoft. Clinisoft has been modified and maintained to suit our use. Many other digital applications are used in intensive care work, for example the general patient information system Miranda, the laboratory system Weblab and the birth information system Haikara, as well as the surgery and procedure system Orbit.
Shift planning is also done digitally and “Titania” is used for this. Shifts can be planned remotely or at the workplace. In the role of responsible nurse, the municipal recruitment system is used when more staff are needed. The Secapp application is used when you need to alert your own staff to work. The staff communicates with each other using e-mail and teams.
When you want to participate in the University Hospital’s trainings, you register through the OSS system, and vacations and sick leaves are entered in the ESS system.
So there are a lot of different applications in my work. When a new employee comes to work, it takes time to learn to use and understand all the applications and other digitalization tools.
Social media tools- platforms i could use in my current job
A social media service where the user can share pictures and videos among other users. Users can comment and like content shared by each other. Instagram has influencers, i.e. popular content producers who have influence on their followers’ purchasing decisions and other actions. On Instagram, you can also publish expressions that take a stand and also do your own advertising, for example about your own company. With the help of Instagram, you can make your organization more visible.
I’m already familiar with Instagram, and this is used with our Department, but I think it could be used even more actively on behalf of the department. I think this application is easy and also interesting, but then the thought arises that is the page reliable.
is a networking tool for professional career development. LinkedIn is not necessarily a job search site directly, but it can be considered a way to expand your own network and get possible job offers or apply for employees. It is a really useful tool for healthcare professionals.
LinkedIn is familiar to me. LinkedIn could be used for your workplace if more nurses are needed. Here you could search for and import an ad about the department’s work.
YouTube
is a diverse video service where you can find all kinds of material. Useful but also useless. On YouTube, you can share health topics and make, for example, various presentation or educational videos. On YouTube you can find, for example, an introduction video of our Department and various educational videos such as baby massage. This could be used even more in the department’s marketing.
Mural
Mural is a digital workspace that enables remote collaboration using an easy visual application. Mural gives the opportunity to think and collaborate to solve possible problems. With Mural you can create, for example, diagrams, and with the help of various tools you can hold interesting meetings and workshops. In the healthcare environment, Muralia could be used, for example, remotely, in various meetings and teamwork at events. I’m not familiar with Murali, but it was nice to get to know this application.
Vimeo
is a video service. Watching videos and registering as a user is free. Registered users can add their own videos and write comments on others’ videos. In Vimeo, you can save a video in question on your computer. In Vimeo’s rules, the video must not be e.g. ad. On Vimeo, you can share even useful health videos. This was a new application for me, I think that in the future I will delve into the secrets of this application.
Social media – positive and negative sides
The good aspects of social media are that it reaches people in real time and also quickly. It helps you find a solution to a puzzle and also brings entertainment to everyday life. In social media, you can share experiences and create relationships.
Reliability, hate speech and copyright violations bring negativity. How can a picture or username fall into the wrong hands. If you sell something on social media, how can you be sure that the seller is not cheating. In social media, you also need to know what is being published and whether the participants in the video, for example, have signed a consent form. What to publish and how to publish. Is everything allowed.
Social media can also be addictive, especially among young people but also among adults. Its use may continue, which may also have harmful effects.
But if you know how to use social media wisely and moderately, it can open new avenues and new ideas. With it, you can find a friend, stay up-to-date on world events, or even find a job.
I think the most important thing is to think about what you post online and be honest. When you know the risks and benefits of social media, it’s easier to do business online.
Elements of successful use of a digital application
Ease of use, advertising, security, clear rules, user friendly and suitable for mobile devices. In my opinion, these things make for a clear and successful digital application.
Self-assessment
It was interesting to open different applications and think about things from a healthcare perspective. Some of the applications were already familiar, but there were also some I hadn’t heard of. Digitization has become a part of our lives and therefore we should look at things with open eyes and start exploring new applications. I like to think about things and it was interesting to think about how different applications help me in my work or how I can use them. This course has been interesting and challenged me to improve my English language skills.
