Digital tools in my daily work
Digital tools and social media platforms have become an important part of modern working life. Originally, many social media applications were mainly created for communication and entertainment during free time, but today they are also widely used in workplaces. In healthcare, digital platforms support communication, teamwork, scheduling, information sharing, education, and patient services.
In my current work in the laboratory, we use several digital tools every day. These tools are important for communication, patient management, scheduling, and workflow organisation. One of the main tools we use is Microsoft Teams. Teams is mainly used for formal communication, meetings, and sharing work-related information. It allows employees from different locations to communicate easily and participate in meetings remotely.
We also use WhatsApp for quicker and less formal communication. Patient information is never shared there, but it is useful for informing colleagues about practical matters. For example, if one of our programs is not working properly, employees can quickly ask whether others are experiencing the same issue. We also use WhatsApp to organize off-work activities and social events.
Outlook is used for official email communication within the company and with other hospitals. Some patient referrals are also received electronically through encrypted email systems, which improves efficiency and communication between healthcare organisations.
WebFimlab is one of the most important work systems we use. It is the official program for accessing patient laboratory referrals and test results. Through the system, we can see previous laboratory tests, upcoming tests, and patient information related to laboratory work.
Vihta is used for managing patient appointments and the queueing system in the laboratory. It helps organize patient flow and reduce waiting times.
Quinyx is used for work shift planning and scheduling. Employees can check their shifts, work locations, and schedules easily through the application.
Social media and digital tools in healthcare
For this assignment, I selected five social media or digital tools that could be useful in healthcare work: ChatGPT, DeepL, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
ChatGPT can be a useful support tool in healthcare, especially in clinical care where healthcare workers often need to write long patient reports and documentation. For workers whose Finnish or Swedish language skills are still developing, writing professional texts can sometimes be challenging. ChatGPT could help improve grammar, sentence structure, and clarity of texts. However, it is extremely important not to include any patient-identifying information when using AI tools. Patient confidentiality and data protection must always remain the highest priority. Another advantage of ChatGPT is that it can quickly explain medical concepts, summarize information, or help healthcare workers search for ideas and educational materials. At the same time, healthcare workers must remember that AI can sometimes provide inaccurate or incomplete information, so professional judgment is always necessary.
DeepL is a translation tool that I already use frequently at work when there is a language barrier with patients. Sometimes patients have their own translation applications, but if they do not, DeepL can help communicate simple instructions and information.I also use DeepL when writing quick messages or emails if I am unsure about spelling or certain expressions in Finnish or Swedish. I think language support tools are especially valuable in healthcare because clear communication is important for patient safety.One challenge is that translation applications are not always perfectly accurate, especially with medical vocabulary. Therefore, healthcare workers must still ensure that patients fully understand important information.
Instagram can be useful in healthcare organizations mainly as a public communication platform. Laboratories and hospitals can use Instagram to inform citizens about opening hours, changes in services, recruitment opportunities, and health campaigns.Social media also allows organisations to communicate with large numbers of people quickly. It can improve public awareness and make healthcare services more approachable.However, social media must be used carefully in healthcare settings. Confidential information and patient privacy must always be protected. Healthcare workers must also maintain professional behaviour online because inappropriate posts can affect the reputation of both the employee and the organisation.
LinkedIn is a professional networking platform that can support career development and communication between professionals. In healthcare, LinkedIn can be used for networking, recruitment, sharing professional knowledge, and learning about developments in healthcare.Healthcare organisations can also use LinkedIn for employer branding and recruitment. Employees may connect with colleagues from different hospitals and countries, which can increase professional collaboration and learning opportunities.I think LinkedIn is especially useful because healthcare is constantly evolving, and networking can support professional growth and career opportunities.
YouTube can be a valuable educational tool in healthcare. When working in clinical care, healthcare professionals sometimes need to refresh their memory about procedures they do not perform frequently. Educational videos can help review techniques and procedures quickly.For example, videos may demonstrate wound care, medical equipment usage, or patient procedures. Visual learning can sometimes be easier than reading instructions from textbooks.The challenge with YouTube is that there are many videos available, and not all information is reliable or accurate. Healthcare workers must therefore evaluate sources critically and preferably use videos produced by trusted healthcare organisations or educational institutions.
Positive and negative sides of social media in healthcare
The use of social media and digital tools in healthcare has many positive effects. Communication becomes faster and easier, even between people in different geographical locations. Digital tools improve teamwork, access to information, scheduling, and education. Social media can also support public health education and allow healthcare organisations to communicate directly with citizens. Educational platforms help healthcare workers continuously update their knowledge and skills.
However, there are also risks and challenges. One of the biggest concerns is patient privacy and confidentiality. Healthcare workers must be extremely careful not to share information that could identify patients. Another challenge is misinformation. Not all information shared online is accurate, and people may sometimes trust unreliable sources. Excessive use of digital tools can also increase stress and information overload for healthcare workers. Digital communication should support healthcare work, but it should not replace professional interaction, teamwork, or critical thinking.
Successful use of digital applications
Successful use of digital applications requires several important factors. First, applications must be easy to use and accessible for different users. Complicated systems can create frustration and reduce efficiency. Second, good cybersecurity and data protection are essential, especially in healthcare where sensitive patient information is handled daily. Third, proper training is important. Employees need support and education to use digital systems effectively and safely. Finally, communication and clear guidelines are important. Workers must know what kinds of information can be shared, where it can be shared, and how digital tools should be used professionally.
Self-reflection
As a registered nurse and phlebotomist, I use several digital tools daily in my work. This assignment helped me reflect on how social media and digital platforms can support healthcare work, what benefits they bring, and what challenges and risks are connected to their use. It also helped me understand how many digital tools and social media platforms are already connected to healthcare work. Some of the tools listed in the assignment, such as Asana, Issuu, Jodel, Mural, and Pi, were completely new to me. Learning about these tools expanded my understanding of how digital platforms can support communication, teamwork, organisation, and creativity in workplaces.
I also realised how important digital skills have become in healthcare. Technology and digital communication are now part of everyday work, and healthcare workers must continuously adapt to new systems and applications. At the same time, I was reminded me that digital tools should always be used responsibly. Privacy, professionalism, and patient safety must remain priorities when using social media and digital platforms in healthcare.
