I will also analyze five new digital applications that could benefit my practice, and evaluate the core elements required for the successful implementation of digital solutions within the social and healthcare sector.

Social media platforms and digital applications are frequently perceived merely as channels for leisure communication and entertainment. However, the boundary between personal applications and professional tools has blurred significantly. Organizations increasingly leverage modern digital solutions to enhance communication, streamline project management, optimize content creation, and foster professional networking. Within the social and healthcare sector—and specifically in residential child welfare services—digitalization has traditionally been viewed with skepticism, often treated as a challenge or an object of strict regulation. In modern social work, however, digital environments should be recognized as a natural extension of young people’s everyday lives and as valuable tools that can support professionals and promote comprehensive client wellbeing.

Current Job Role and the Utilization of Digital Tools

I currently work as a Social Care Instructor in residential child welfare services within a private social care company. My primary responsibilities involve supporting the growth, wellbeing, and daily life structures of sated children and young people within a multidisciplinary team. While my work is fundamentally relational and interactive, digital solutions intersect with my daily routines on multiple levels.

Simultaneously, I am pursuing my Master’s degree (YAMK) in the Development of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Work at Savonia University of Applied Sciences. Since my undergraduate studies, I have developed a keen interest in how digitalization, immersive technologies, and new innovations can support social and healthcare professionals and enhance client wellbeing. My master’s thesis focused specifically on the utilization of Virtual Reality (VR) and haptic technology in mental health work, expanding my understanding of how emerging technologies can be integrated into therapeutic and rehabilitative practices.

In my professional background, I have developed digital, QR-code-based room folders for young people to streamline communication and daily structures in residential units. Furthermore, I have extensive experience in digital youth work and online community moderation from the NGO sector, where I helped manage a Discord community of over 14,000 users, supporting young people’s mental health through digital gaming culture.

In my current daily practice, I utilize statutory, organization-specific client data systems for documentation. I also rely on standard communication platforms, such as email and Microsoft Teams, for multidisciplinary collaboration with authorities, schools, and families. While these tools fulfill statutory and administrative requirements, daily scheduling, creative brainstorming, agile internal project management, and client engagement would benefit significantly from more dynamic and visual digital solutions. Enhancing professional productivity and developing modern social services require continuous experimentation and an open-minded adoption of new digital tools.

Five New Digital Tools and Their Utilization in Practice

For this assignment, I selected five digital tools from the provided list and beyond that are not yet part of my daily routines in child welfare work or my master’s development projects. Below is an analysis of how I could utilize them and the rationale behind my selections.

Miro (Visual Collaboration and Service Design): I would implement Miro’s digital whiteboard in our unit’s development meetings, multidisciplinary team sessions, and service design projects related to my master’s studies. Miro allows teams to create real-time mind maps, process charts, and post-it note brainstorming sessions to improve daily structures or map out digital client service paths. It offers a highly visual, dynamic, and engaging way to co-create, even when team members are working remotely or across different locations.

Asana (Team Project Management and Development Projects): I would utilize Asana to coordinate internal development projects within the child welfare unit, such as organizing events, managing onboarding processes for new employees, or implementing new digital systems. I could break large projects down into smaller tasks, set deadlines, and assign clear responsibilities to colleagues. Asana brings clarity and transparency to workflows, preventing tasks from getting lost in email chains and reducing the cognitive load on staff.

DeepL (International Communication and Research Tracking): I would utilize DeepL on two levels. First, it would assist in multicultural collaboration with families from immigrant backgrounds when rapid, nuanced translation is needed for daily guidelines or notices. Second, I would use it in my master’s studies and expert work to rapidly analyze international scientific research papers on immersive technologies (VR/haptics). DeepL understands context and professional terminology significantly better than traditional translators, reducing the risk of misunderstandings in sensitive social care contexts.

Dall-E / Midjourney (Visual Therapeutic Work with Youth): I would introduce generative image AI into direct client work with children and young people in residential care. A young person who struggles to verbalize their emotions, fears, or traumatic experiences could work alongside an instructor to generate AI images representing their inner world or future aspirations. These visuals can serve as powerful conversation starters and tools for reflection. Given my background in gaming culture, I view image AI as a natural extension of digital self-expression.

LinkedIn (Professional Branding and Networking): I would become active on LinkedIn to share insights from my master’s thesis (VR and haptics in mental health), digital development in child welfare, and gamification in the social sector. LinkedIn is the premier platform to showcase professional expertise, keep pace with emerging technology trends, and connect with other digital innovators, researchers, and stakeholders for future multidisciplinary projects.

Pros and Cons of Social Media and Digital Tools in Social Care

Integrating new digital tools and social media into child welfare and mental health work requires a continuous balancing act between benefits and potential risks.

Positive Aspects (Benefits):

Client Reach and Engagement: Young people inhabit digital spaces. Utilizing familiar platforms lowers the threshold for them to accept support and engage in their own care planning.

Efficiency and Time Savings: Agile project management tools reduce bureaucracy and administrative email clutter, freeing up more time for face-to-face client interactions.

Seamless Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Shared digital platforms ensure real-time information flow between social workers, instructors, therapists, and educators.

Access to Knowledge and Expertise: Professional networks provide rapid, free access to the latest international research and peer support.

Negative Aspects (Risks and Challenges)

Data Security, Privacy, and GDPR: Child welfare involves highly sensitive, confidential data. Third-party applications carry a risk of data leaks outside the organization. Identifiable client data must never be entered into public AI tools.

Ethical Issues and Addiction: Social media algorithms can be addictive and may exacerbate youth mental health issues, disrupt sleep, or expose minors to cyberbullying and grooming.

Fragmented Workflows and Information Overload: Constant notifications break professional focus. In social care, interruptions can be dangerous during acute or critical situations.

Digital Divide: Not all staff members or clients possess equal access to equipment or digital literacy, which can create operational gaps within teams.

Elements of Successful Digital Application Deployment

The implementation of technology in the social care sector frequently fails if tools are imposed top-down without an understanding of grass-roots operational realities. A successful digital application in a professional environment relies on the following elements:

Intuitive and Accessible Usability (UX/UI): The software must be easy to navigate, logical, and visually clear so that adoption does not require extensive manuals. In a fast-paced social care environment, complex interfaces are abandoned immediately.

High Security and Ethical Compliance: The application must comply with strict data protection regulations (GDPR and national client data laws). Professionals and clients must trust that their data is secure and not harvested to train commercial AI models.

Concrete Value to Daily Operations: The tool must solve a real problem—either by saving time, improving communication, or streamlining information flow. Technology must never be an end in itself, but rather a mechanism to work smarter.

Mobile Optimization: Because a social care instructor’s role requires continuous movement alongside young people, digital tools must operate seamlessly and lightweight on smartphones and tablets.

Change Management and Clear Guidelines: Successful deployment requires clear organizational protocols defining which application is used for what purpose, alongside leadership support and peer mentoring. Involving users in the development phase ensures optimal commitment.

Brief Self-Evaluation

Through this course and the process of compiling this report, my understanding of the diverse applications of digital platforms within the social sector has deepened significantly. While my background in immersive technologies and digital gaming provided a strong technical foundation, this assignment challenged me to evaluate digital solutions from a broader organizational perspective, focusing on team collaboration and workflow management.

I pushed myself to consider how tools like Miro, Asana, and generative AI—which are not traditionally part of the child welfare toolkit—could revolutionize the field. I evaluate my performance in this course as excellent, as I successfully bridged theoretical frameworks with my practical work experience and ongoing master’s studies. This process has reinforced my vision that the future of the social and healthcare sector lies in a successful symbiosis of human empathy and intelligent technology.

Utilizing Social Media and Digital Platforms in Professional Expert Work: Perspectives from Child Welfare and Social Care Development I will examine the role of digital tools and social media in my current daily work.
