Digital Platforms in My Work and the Role of Communication Tools
Digital platforms are an essential part of modern working life. Even in fields where social media is not directly used, digital tools shape communication, documentation, and collaboration. In my professional field, biomedical laboratory science within healthcare, digital platforms support patient safety, workflow efficiency, and teamwork.
My Current Work and Digital Tools I Use
In laboratory work, digital tools are part of nearly every task. The most important systems are laboratory information systems, electronic patient records, automated analyzers connected to digital networks, barcode systems, and secure communication platforms. These systems ensure that samples, results, and patient information are handled accurately and safely.
Daily work involves:
- Registering and tracking samples using barcode systems
- Accessing laboratory information systems for test requests and results
- Documenting processes digitally
- Communicating with colleagues and other healthcare units through secure digital channels
- Participating in online training and meetings
Data security is extremely important in healthcare. Therefore, many common social media platforms are not used directly in patient-related work. However, communication and digital collaboration tools still play a key role.
Selected Digital Tools
For this assignment, I selected five digital tools: ChatGPT, WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, email, and internal digital systems. Although not all of these are “social media” in a traditional sense, they represent modern digital communication platforms.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT can support learning and knowledge work. In laboratory work, it could be used for explaining general concepts, summarizing guidelines, or helping with writing tasks such as instructions or reports. It is useful for brainstorming and understanding theoretical topics.
However, AI tools cannot be used for patient data or confidential information. The risk of incorrect or outdated information also exists. Therefore, ChatGPT should only support learning and general knowledge, not clinical decision-making.
WhatsApp is widely used in everyday communication. In work life, it could support quick communication within teams, especially in non-patient-related matters like scheduling or general coordination.
However, due to strict data protection requirements in healthcare, WhatsApp cannot be used for sharing patient information. The positive side is fast communication; the negative side is data security risk and blurring of work-life boundaries.
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is one of the most important collaboration tools. It supports video meetings, chat, file sharing, and teamwork across locations. In healthcare, Teams is useful for remote meetings, training sessions, and project work.
Its strengths include structured communication, integration with other Microsoft tools, and better security compared to open social media platforms. A challenge can be information overload and constant notifications.
Email remains a key communication tool. It is used for formal communication, documentation, and sharing official information. In healthcare, secure email systems are often used.
The advantage of email is clear documentation and asynchronous communication. The disadvantage is the large volume of messages, which can reduce efficiency.
Internal Digital Systems
Internal systems include laboratory information systems and other secure platforms. These are the core of digital work in the laboratory. They support patient safety, data accuracy, and traceability.
These systems are reliable and secure but can be complex and require training. Technical issues can disrupt workflow significantly.
Social Media in Healthcare: Positive and Negative Aspects
In my field, traditional social media is not used in daily work due to strict data protection regulations. However, social media still plays a role in professional development, networking, and education.
Positive aspects:

- Fast communication
- Access to current information
Negative aspects:
- Data security risks
- Spread of misinformation
- Blurring of professional boundaries

Healthcare professionals must be especially careful about confidentiality and professional behavior online.

Successful use of digital tools requires several elements:

In healthcare, digital tools must support patient safety and not increase risks.
Self-Evaluation
This assignment helped me reflect on how many digital platforms I use daily, even in a field where social media is limited. I understood better the balance between efficiency and data security.
I learned that digital competence includes not only technical skills but also ethical awareness and responsibility. In the future, I want to develop my knowledge about secure digital communication, AI applications in healthcare, and user-centered system design.
