Utilizing Social Media in Everyday Healthcare

Healthcare is a rapidly digitizing field where communication, information sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration play a central role. Traditionally, social media has been considered a tool for personal communication, but increasingly, its various platforms are being used in professional contexts as well. In healthcare, the use of digital applications can support patient guidance, professional networking, keeping up with current research, and building organizational visibility and trust.

In today’s work environment, healthcare professionals already use many digital tools daily. Patient information systems, telemedicine platforms, electronic appointment systems, and internal communication channels are all part of everyday practice. In addition, social media channels offer new opportunities for communication and professional development.

However, using social media in healthcare requires special consideration. Patient safety, data protection, and professional ethical principles set clear boundaries on what and how information can be shared. At the same time, social media can serve as an effective tool for health communication, spreading preventive information, and correcting misinformation.

Nurse in Pediatric and Adolescent Care – Digital Tools Supporting Everyday Work

I work as a nurse in pediatric and adolescent care. My work focuses on holistic patient care, family guidance, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Working with children and adolescents emphasizes clear communication, building trust, and appropriate age guidance. Digital tools have become an essential part of my daily work, supporting both patient care and professional development.

The primary tool in nursing is the patient information system, which I use daily. In addition, I use various healthcare digital applications, such as Terveyskylä and the organization’s own digital care pathways. One of the most frequently used tools in my work is the Terveyskylä website. Terveyskylä provides reliable and up-to-date information on various diseases and care pathways for patients and their families. It serves as an important support for guidance because its content is trustworthy and evidence based.

The organization’s digital care pathways enable individualized care plans for patients. Through these pathways, patient monitoring, guidance, and communication can be carried out easily and securely. They also support continuity of care between hospital visits.

In daily work, I also actively use Microsoft 365 Outlook for email. Outlook enables interdisciplinary communication with colleagues and partners efficiently and flexibly. The calendar functions help organize my workday and manage meetings.

Retrieval information is an essential part of nursing. I use Google to search for up-to-date information. However, it is crucial to critically evaluate sources to ensure that information provided to patients is evidence-based.

Additionally, I use YouTube to enhance professional competence and practical nursing skills. YouTube offers a wide range of educational videos. In practical nursing, it is useful for patient guidance, such as demonstrating exercises for pain management or muscle maintenance. However, using YouTube in healthcare requires careful consideration since content quality can vary.

The use of digital tools in pediatric and adolescent care improves information flow, increases patient participation, and supports families’ everyday life. At the same time, it requires strong knowledge of data protection, professional judgment, and the ability to guide patients to reliable information. Digital tools do not replace human interaction, but when used correctly, they significantly complement and strengthen nursing care.

New Social Media Tools and Their Use in Nursing

WhatsApp – Communication and Team Bonding

WhatsApp is an instant messaging application that allows communication between individuals and groups. Users can send text messages, images, videos, and make voice and video calls. In my work community, WhatsApp could be used more effectively for informal communication and team bonding.

Using WhatsApp could support grouping, getting to know colleagues and exchanging information. The advantage of the application is its ease and speed, and it is certainly available to almost every employee. On the other hand, you must be careful not to share patient data or sensitive information in the application, as it is not designed for healthcare data security requirements.

Microsoft 365 Teams – Team Communication and Collaboration

Microsoft 365 Teams is a versatile communication and collaboration platform. It serves as a secure and organization-approved channel for internal communication, video meetings, and file sharing. In my work community, Teams could be used daily for regular weekly meetings, recording sessions, and transcribing meeting notes, ensuring consistent information is shared across the team.

Teams’ internal chat and channel features allow rapid communication within the department, visible to all team members in real time. This facilitates inter-team communication and requests assistance. Teams also make it easier to organize interdisciplinary meetings and can be used to plan nursing work and share documents. Its integration with the organization’s email and calendar simplifies workflow coordination.

ChatGPT – Information Retrieval and Content Structuring

ChatGPT is an AI-based tool for information retrieval and content structuring. It can quickly provide information on various topics. It is not a medical database and does not replace clinical judgment, but when used correctly, it can support work tasks. Patient data should never be entered into AI services due to privacy concerns.

In nursing, ChatGPT can assist with structuring information, supporting learning, and generating written material. It can help clarify medical concepts, understand nursing recommendations, and learn new procedures. It can also draft reports, summarize long texts, and format instructions for patients. Highlighting ChatGPT’s use in the work community can improve workflow efficiency.

Mobile Certificate – Secure Authentication

A mobile certificate is a tool for strong electronic authentication, allowing secure login to online services and signing documents via confirmation requests sent to a mobile phone.

In nursing, mobile certificates can be used to access patient information systems, electronic services, and sign documents. Currently, many use physical professional cards for authentication. Mobile certificates represent the future of healthcare, offering ease of use, strong security, and accessibility from anywhere via phone and network.

LinkedIn – Professional Networking and Expertise

LinkedIn is a social media platform where users can create a profile, showcase education, work experience, skills, and network with other professionals. It supports professional networking, expertise development, and information sharing.

As a nurse, LinkedIn can be used to build a professional profile, job search, and network with other healthcare professionals. Users can share updates, participate in discussions, and follow training and career opportunities. While LinkedIn is not used directly in patient care, it plays an important role in professional growth and keeping up with current knowledge.

Successful Use of Digital Applications in Healthcare

Effective use of digital applications in healthcare requires several key factors. Applications must be user-friendly and clear for both professionals and patients and their families. In pediatric and adolescent care, content must be age-appropriate and understandable.

Security and data protection are crucial. Healthcare deals with sensitive information, so applications must be secure, and staff must use them responsibly. Professional competence and adequate training support smooth use. Continuous familiarization and skill updates are necessary.

Digital applications should support daily workflows without increasing workload. Ideally, they improve information flow, save time, and enhance patient guidance. Organizations should provide clear instructions to ensure consistent use.

Successful use also requires smooth interaction and service accessibility. Finally, applications should be regularly evaluated and developed based on user feedback to ensure they truly support safe and high-quality nursing care.

Summary

The role of social media and digital tools in healthcare continues to grow. In pediatric and adolescent care, digital applications can support patient guidance, interdisciplinary collaboration, information flow, and professional development. In my daily work, I already use several digital tools, including email, patient digital care pathways, and information search services. I also explored new tools such as WhatsApp, Teams, ChatGPT, mobile certificates, and LinkedIn, considering their potential to support my work.

Using digital applications offers benefits like faster communication, improved accessibility, and up-to-date information. They can increase work efficiency and support patient engagement in care. At the same time, challenges include security and privacy issues, technical problems, and potential increased workload. Therefore, digital tools require professional judgment, clear guidelines, and ongoing skill development.

Self-Evaluation

Completing this assignment helped me reflect on my digital competence and attitude toward social media use in work. I realized that I already use several digital tools daily but could use them more purposefully and strategically. I also learned to evaluate the benefits and risks of various applications more critically, particularly from a healthcare perspective.

I consider my digital skills to be at a good level, but there is still room for improvement, especially in utilizing new applications more comprehensively and deepening data protection knowledge. In the future, I want to develop my skills in professional networking and using digital tools for patient guidance. This assignment enhanced my understanding of the importance of using digital applications responsibly, always prioritizing patient safety and ethics.
