Sure, we have the usual cloud services etc. in use, but the adoption phase is still taking baby steps. I think it´s the amount of workforce and also (I hate to say this out loud) the average age of the employees, that create an obstacle of fully taking all the possibilities of digitalization over. I´m not saying that every person must embrace the on-going development of technology and digitalization, but some have seemed to overall skip the basic software stuff. And in this context, we´re talking about sending a simple email to someone. This could be corrected by offering education about the basic usage of cloud services. When the employees are ready and instructed to utilize different systems, the usage percent could rise, and it would lead to less time used for example in planning working shifts, driving around to bring new instructions (in paper). At first the learning of full usage and the possibilities will surely take a lot of time, but when it is completed, I believe that the time it will release can be used more efficiently for example focusing in improving well-being at work.

The open digital society

I think that we have taken the right steps, when the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) took place in 2018. At our line of work, we process a lot of personal data, for example names, identification numbers etc. And it used to be quite carefree, who had the hold of the information to say at least. And of course, everything was in paper. When in 2018 the information had to be evaluated, regarding, who needs it and for what, it was a welcomed reform. Nowdays the personal data is obviously runned digital and is well supervised, who is using the data. So, in this I see only positive. But the negative I can see is the fact that there are a lot of companies, that really don´t protect the data enough. It needs to be an ongoing process, that needs experts on it. It also needs the personel to get the understanding about the data, that can be used as a identification information. And as I brought out already, training personel to this is worth the effort.

In my personal life, the regulations about personal data has been present for example, when I register myself to a new service or quit using one, I know where my information is been stored and/or I can ask my information to be deleted (if it is possible) or I can choose the options about passing my data forward to other parties. But also in my studies, I have encountered the requirements of GDPR, for example as I was writing my thesis and needed to create interviews that were anonymous. This required me to be the data controller and processor at the same time, and I have to admit, it was a mild “high-pressure” situation to ensure that the data was only in my hands and nothing about the true identification information leaked to the thesis or people involved in the interviews.

Chat GPT

I have used Chat GPT in my freetime already, but not in my studies or in working life. I have, however, acknowledged that this will be reality in near future (if not already), that the use of AI is going to be almost mandatory in both fields. I asked Chat GPT the following questions:

How will the AI become a part of the health care support services?

The answer was an overall answer about medication and frankly everything that didn´t relate to the supporting service factors of health care. So I had to ask more specifically regarding the supporting services, and it gave an answer that AI will become a part as robotics, nutrition planning and delivery, logistics, supporting personel in scheduling, helping reduce burnout(!). The AI`s answer was quite extensive, but the thing that kinda shook me in it´s answer was, that human contact will still matter as giving comfort, emotional and cultural understanding and noticing the subtle changes in one´s condition. So, the Chat GPT recognized in its answer, that a human needs a human even in the supporting field in health care.

What does GDPR deny from AI?

Chat GPT gave an answer including the basic stuff we all already know that AI cannot freely use anyone’s personal data, not even in organizational use, without a lawful reason to use it. Then the answer specified to health care, supposedly because of the previous question I made. But in this answer, I found interesting was the reference to the article 22, that is the biggest limit in GDPR for the use of AI. It creates a protection against solely automated processing in decisions, that have significant effects and Chat GPT gave me examples like; denying insurance, rejecting a job application automatically or determining medical prioritization. In summary Chat GPT told me that:

” A simple way to think about GDPR and AI is: AI is allowed, but organizations must justify the data use, minimize it, secure it, explain it, and keep humans accountable for important decisions.”

In general, the AI should be used to all of the potential, but we should be able to work, study and create with our own hands and minds. The use of AI should go to fastening processes, making more efficient of the daily micro decision and basically give us more time for example keeping our human contacts present. The answer, that the AI gives us can be used as simple guidelines, but we cannot 100% rely on them as the full truth without checking the facts.

Self-evaluation

I learned that the data we give to a harmless website can be joined together with all the data of different harmless websites and it enables creating a bigger picture of your data all together. The idea of the email isn´t private was also thought provoking, though it has been somewhat acknowledged. Also, for someone who hasn´t used Chat GPT in a while, it was surprising how human considerate it was in its answers. That is because when I used it before, it was more machine like answers, but I guess it is a part of its evolvement process and at the same time learning from us. Overall, this was an educational blog assignment, that felt hard to start but it was actually very inspiring to go on. As I brought up in this blog post, the most important thing is to educate yourself and train for the usage of AI and also understand how the data and data users and abuser’s work.

Commented blogs:

DIGI SOCIETY

DIGI SOCIETY

I´m currently working in healthcare support services and in my field of expertise digitalization hasn´t been so quick to move in.
