My experience with KELA

OmaKela became very familiar with me while studying for my Bachelor’s degree. Back then I used it because of the study grant, but after graduating from that degree, I have only logged in to OmaKela few times to pay for the FSHS Student healthcare fee.

In my opinion, it has become harder to find stuff from OmaKela than it used to be, but I like the fact that you can basically do everything online.

How about OmaKanta?

When I logged in, I was first met with information regarding the last time I had logging in to the OmaKanta. That was over two years ago, so you could say I don’t use it very often. That is mainly because of the occupational health services, where I use their application to see the same information, as well as booking times etc.

Will I ever be able to retire?

I went to Työeläke.fi (https://www.tyoelake.fi/en/pension-record/) and got redirected to Varma’s website. There I was able to see my accrued pension at the moment, as well as estimates about my pension at the minimum and maximum retirement age. It was shocking to see the minimum retirement age at little over 68 years and maximum at 70 years. That means I have nice 40 years still to work, to reach the minimum age.

About the estimated pensions, I was actually quite surprised about the amounts considering that I started working “late” and have less than 10 years working experience. I also understand that because I have over 40 years still left, I shouldn’t take those estimates seriously just yet, because, well, anything could happen.

Logging in to these services and gaps in digital services

It is quite easy to log in to these services using bank’s identity service, but that is only when you have access to your phone and related applications. If I were to lose my phone, it would be much harder task to be able to log in. Also I am little bit worried about the budget cuts that keep closing branches and pushing important services to completely online. For example my grandparents only have phones like Doro, in which you can only call and text, and they are more dependent on those services than I am.

Online shopping

I went through several products on sites like Amazon and eBay, as well as “local” sites like Verkkokauppa.com and Gigantti. The prices were lower on eBay and Amazon on many cases, but not in every product.

I mainly checked for electronic devices, and did not create an accounts to see for the exact delivery prices, but with those included, the price would be close to what I would pay here.

So am I gonna order some devices from abroad, wait for them to arrive in few weeks and save like 20 euros or am I gonna go to Verkkokauppa.com website, order the same devices there and get them delivered to me within an hour using Wolt delivery? The latter one of course.

Online shopping has changed so much in the last few years as there are so many web shops that sell the same stuff. What I don’t like about the most new web shops is that they are just platforms for Chinese poor quality stuff with various different sellers.

My previous example was with Samsung products, but if I were to buy something else and click myself to a Sandstrom product (Gigantti’s store brand), I would look for the same product somewhere else because I know for a fact that the exact same product from same factory with different brand name is being sold somewhere else.

While on vacation, I always prefer Booking.com over hotels own web site. Most of my hotel bookings are part of road trips where I tend to stay in 5 or more different hotels or accommodations. Even though price for a night could be little bit cheaper on hotels own web site, I like it that I have all my hotel bookings on the same place with only one account, rather than giving my information to multiple different sites etc.

Application on my field

I chose 3StepIT’s Asset IQ application portal. 3StepIT is Finnish company offering lifecycle management and leasing for technical devices (https://www.3stepit.com/technology-lifecycle-management).

Part of my job is to oversee and manage our 1300+ device fleet and Asset IQ helps me with this job. If we were to invest in those 1300+ devices, the investment amount would be quite big. Now with 3StepIT, we lease them for little higher price than we would have needed to invest, but the amount is spread to lets say 36 months. After the leases end, I can just order a packing and picking up for all of those devices from their current locations, and I know that those devices are securely disposed, so I don’t need to worry about getting rid off them myself.

Also in the Asset IQ, with just few clicks, I have fully detailed list of all of these devices, e.g. serial numbers, locations, users, leases, etc.

Lets say I need to buy 100 new tablets. I can basically buy them from any place I want with the best price, and just let them send an invoice to 3StepIT. After this, I get confirmation on the Asset IQ with list of all these tablets and their information, and voilà.

Digital competence

I did the digital competence test and got scores that put me in the level 6 (advanced), with the top categories being data protection, self-service, storage and configuration. At the other end, categories were active participation, production and sharing and health. (I think I have commented once on social media in like 4 years, although I don’t know how that is considered a “bad” thing).

This was fun little test and I might recommend it to our staff.

Self-reflection

Going through these assignments and other people’s blogs, I feel like I can really call myself a Digi Citizen with good knowledge on related things. These assignments made me log in to services that I have known to exist, but have not need to use in long time.
