Digital shops
Digital shops are very familiar for me. I have purchased online many items for years, such as, clothes, shoes, groceries, home decoration pieces, cosmetics, different supplies and appliances and so on. I find it very easy and convenient. Especially during the recent years, here in Finland many stores have closed their doors and thus, the assortment of items is very limited. Mainly I regard online shopping as time and effort saving. Many times lots of items can be found cheaper than what I would pay for them in Finland, even with a possible shipping costs and customs duties.
When I leisure travel, I use a service of Booking.com. I like it because I can quickly browse through and compare different accommodation options; and place different filters to further ease the search process. I always read reviews of the place, as I feel more safe and my expectations tend to be more objective, once I have read a feedback from other visitors. There is always a possibility to contact the accommodation provider and express any additional requests, which is extremely convenient. There are always several payment options available. Whenever possible I choose to carry out the payment process on the spot, not because I find the service unreliable (I have never had a problem with any refunds), but rather I like to keep my options open, in case my travel plans would change at the very last minute. As I have been a customer of Booking.com for many years and made many reservations through their service, I have earned a bit higher loyalty status, which enables me to receive special discounts or extra benefits, which I truly appreciate.
App of my choice
The app from aviation industry that I decided to introduce is called Flightradar24 (available also via a webpage). It is a service where one can follow air traffic in real time. One can view exact location of an aircraft, an aircraft type, a registration ID number, flying speed and flight altitude; as well as, a flight route with a departure and arrival airport. One can examine specific airport, aircraft rotation history and flight history. As a fun bonus, during Christmas time it displays a flight route of Santa’s sleigh (registration ID number HOHOHO, travelling from North Pole to North Pole 😁). I do not use it much for work purposes, but it does come in handy when traveling.
Digital competences
Students were asked to accomplish a Digital Competence Test. Participants of the test are asked a series of questions and they evaluate how well presented statements hold true. First, I tried launching the service without giving my permission to use any cookies. Not sure if it was a coincidence, but the page declined to proceed with experiencing “unknown error” and asked me to reload the page. After completing that step, I gave a permission to use only essential cookies and was able to proceed. I wonder if there would have been any difference in the test results if I would have completed it on a public computer, with a browser set to an anonymous mode.
Nevertheless, below are shown my test results. Based on the completed test, my core digital competences are critical evaluation (ability to process, understand and critically evaluate digital information when sent and received), social awareness (ability to reconcile behavior, tone, language and technology with regard to context and social relations) and self-service (ability and desire to seek out and benefit from self-service solutions online); while automation (ability to modify or create digital solutions that can fully or partially automate and perform a task) is clearly the field that I don’t have much knowledge about yet.
