MY WORK AND DIGITAL TOOLS

I work in the neonatal intensive care unit at Kuopio University hospital. I’m a midwife and I take care of premature babies and sick newborns. Furthermore, we take care of under one year of babies who are waking up after surgery and under one year who need intensive care in our unit. So I take care of babies on my hands and with observing. I also work with many devices which are needed to help care for babies. A lot of information from devices goes straight to the patient information system. I record in the patient information system, Clinisoft. I also use some other patient information systems to the treat of patient for example Verkis (blood order), WebLab (requests to the laboratory), Haikara (birth information), Miranda (patient information system of Kuopion University Hospital), Leksu (plans of surgery) and Oberon (check in and check out).

I use digital tools to sharing information at my work, especially Microsoft Office tools. I’m connect with other colleagues like by email (Outlook) or Teams. I’m a member of the different groups in Teams where we communicate by writing or meetings and develop our work. Information of our unit is provided through an electronic information board, by email or in Teams. Because of pandemic time most of meetings are moved to Teams, or they are hybrid meetings so a person can be present or online.  I also use Word and Powerpoint when I make presentations to the breastfeeding counselling. Most of trainings are online too. It saves money, time and nature. It’s simple but collaboration isn’t so easy if participants don’t know each other.

Titania is a system to plan shifts and check actual hours when I have been at work. It’s important to get plan own working shifts in shift work because it helps employee’s well-being. We also use an alerting platform, Secapp. This application alerts nurses/midwifes of own unit to the work if the unit haven’t staff enough. If it isn’t necessary to get our own nurses, we make request to KuntaRekry. There can be available nurses some can work in our unit. The employees apply/significant own sick leaves, holidays, study leaves, trainings and other leaves to HR-desk

I belong social media team which means I make posts and stories of our unit to the Instagram account of KYS_synnytykset

FIVE NEW TOOLS OF SOCIAL MEDIA FOR ME

LindkedIn is a platform for professional networking and career development. I have heard LindedIn, but I haven’t used this tool before although that can be good for me. That’s why I chose this palatform and now I can find out this at the same time. This tool can help job seekers to search work. Emplyees can privately tell recruiters or publicly share with the LinkedIn community that they looking for new job opportunities. Employees and employers create own profile and are connect with each other online. Members can be connect with people like co-workers, classmates, professors or friends. The employee can tell him-/herself and his/her skills in CV in LinkedIn. If the member want to tell his/her job to other people, he/she posts that work for millions of people to see. Members can invite to become a “connection”. LinkedIn can also be used to organize offline events, join groups, write articles, publish job postings, post photos and videos. Furthermore there can learnt the skills that can need to succeed. LinkedIn is not really a job search site, but it’s as a way to expand network and then get potential job offers and find the employees. Workers and employers will get visibility: they may find each other and cooperate. Those elements do successful use of this digital application.

TikTok hosts a variety of short-form user’s videos from genres like pranks, stunts, tricks, jokes, dance and entertainment. Duration of videos is from 15 seconds to three minutes. TikTok provides a platform for users to create content for fun, but also for money. TikTok picks out content according to the user’s preference. Because everyday in the hospital is a real work, TikTok videos can provide fun to patients and workers. It will bring visibility of hospital and maybe patients more. It’s important to evaluate carefully content of videos. Material of videos can’t be defamatory. Data protection and security must last.

Asana helps organize individual and team tasks in one shared space. Task management is like a to-do list. User can manage team projects and tasks by Asana. Teams can stay in sync, hit deadlines, and reach their goals. Asana empowers teams to work productively and efficiently. To Asana can make integrations like Microsoft office tools. Nurses and midwifes have their own ranges of responsibility in the our unit. This kind of task management would be good and help to develop the different working area in groups. Members of group see what has been done and what hasn’t done yeat. At the same time the management will see where we are going and provide more time to make projects like guidance of patient.

Twitter is a platform where people can talk and share their thoughts. People can express their opinions in Twitter. Public conversations must be collective health, openness and civility. There are congressmen, persons in a high position and celebrities in Twitter too. I can share some things from my daily work for example I can talk salaries of care industry. A chairman Milla-Riikka Rytkönen of Tehy have talked much salaries of care industry. I think it’s good to bring ills to the public. Health and social services reform is interesting subject to talk with professionals in various fields.

Vimeo is a tool for any professional, team, and organization to create, manage, and share videos. Resuscitation team of our unit have shared some videos of Vimeo to the employees. When we talk about training, videos are often more telling than a trainer only talks for “students”. I think we can use videos more in training in neonatal intensive care unit. Making of videos isn’t so easy and it takes time, but constantly available videos make easier to study everywhere and every time. Furthermore, the trainer can teach large troops quickly.

I chose five tools above. I wanted to choose as diverse as possible tools from different genre of social media. Some tools help to facilitate the actual work and some tools help to share information of work in public.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SIDES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Positive

  • Sharing of information
  • Accessibility
  • Visibility
  • Network, collaboration
  • Save time, money and nature (if you don’t have to move your place)

Negative

  • Interpretation of information, truth of information
  • Finding right information
  • Misunderstanding with people (writing, comments, emojis)
  • Lack of physical meetings
  • Addiction
  • Harassment/interference
  • Always available
  • Location with GPS
  • Too much information of person
  • Blue light

There are some positive and negative sides of social media. People must find a balance with using social media. For example, location with GPS help to reach your kid’s location if a parent doesn’t know where the kid is. Social media can see your location with GPS. Do you want that you can followed everywhere? This kind of big data is a little scary. It is up to us to evaluate what kind of information of social media we need to and what we want to tell ourselves. It’s important to evaluate risks and benefits of social media. Elements of successful use of digital application are that users know they do and it must be honest and secure. It will increase the positive cooperating.

SELF EVALUATION

This assignment of ePlatforms was interesting to make. I found out many different tools of social media which I could utilize my daily work. When I thought digital tools in my current work, I understood that I use them without thinking anything. The tools belong almost every work. I often choose the familiar tool to use. It would be good to try the next one. I think I will join to LinkedIn soon. This course was great, and I must challenge my skills of English. A blog platform was new for me. That’s why it was interesting to make.

Hi Anna-Miia! You used a lot of different digital apps in your work. You bring out the positive sides of remote work very well: saving time, money and nature. I agree with you that there are also downsides to working remotely. Personally, I would like to be able to work partly at the office in the future. I need social contacts.
