DIGI CITIZEN

Digital Services, Responsibilities, and My Experiences as an Indian Student

Whether we are communicating, doing business, accessing healthcare services, or accessing government services, digital technologies are an integral part of our lives. A digital citizen is not only someone who uses digital technologies but also someone who is aware of digital citizenship rights, obligations, safety, and the implications of digital citizenship. This assignment has helped me learn about digital technologies and how they are used in my home country, India, compared to the rest of the world. It has also helped me become aware of digital literacy, digital safety, and my own digital citizenship. I will talk about my experiences with social insurance schemes, digitalization of healthcare services, online commerce, engineering, and the problems faced by people who are not digitally literate.

The Social Insurance System in India & Digital Services, I use

The social insurance scheme of India includes government schemes and digital platforms through which citizens can access insurance benefits, which include Employees’ Provident Funds (EPF), Employee State Insurance (ESI), Aadhaar services, and welfare schemes.

Digital Services I personally Use

As a citizen of India, I use a variety of digital government services, which are as follows:

  • Aadhaar Portal (UIDAI): Identity verification.
  • DigiLocker: Digital document storage.
  • UMANG App: Unified access to government services.
  • EPFO Portal: EPF balance and passbook.
  • Incorporate Income Tax Portal: Filing returns..

With these services, it is possible for me as a citizen of India to interact with the government in a faster and more transparent manner.

Development Trends in India

  • Aadhaar-based authentications are on the rise.
  • UPI (Unified Payment Interface) for digital payment systems.
  • AI chatbots in government portals.
  • Paperless services through DigiLocker.
  • Health records through Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

Digital Services in Social & Healthcare in India

Even the healthcare sector in India has witnessed the digital revolution. Various digital technologies are being implemented by the government and other healthcare centers for the betterment of their patients.

Key Digital Healthcare Services

  • Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM): A digital health ID and electronic health record system for the citizens of the country.
  • e-Hospital Portal: This is an online appointment system through which users can access their lab reports and hospital information.
  • Telemedicine Platforms (e-Sanjeevani): This is an online consulting system through which users can consult doctors for free, especially for those living in rural areas.
  • Private Hospital Apps: Various apps are being designed by different healthcare centers through which users can schedule their appointments and access their prescriptions and reports.

Pros

  • Saves time and reduces hospital queues.
  • Easy access to medical history.
  • Better coordination between doctors.
  • Useful for remote and rural areas.
  • Reduces paperwork.

Cons

  • Not all hospitals are fully digital.
  • Elderly people have difficulty with apps.
  • Internet connectivity is a problem in rural areas.
  • Privacy concerns with health data.
  • Misdiagnosis with telemedicine.

Overall, digital healthcare in India is improving rapidly.

Online Shopping vs Local Shops

I explored platforms like Amazon, eBay, Booking.com, and Trivago and compared them with local shops and travel agencies.

Price Comparison:

  • Online platforms often offer lower prices due to discounts, competition, and bulk selling.
  • Local shops sometimes have higher prices but offer immediate availability and personal service.

Information Adequacy

  • Online platforms provide detailed product descriptions, reviews, and ratings.
  • Local shops rely on salespeople’s knowledge, which may be limited or biased.

Reliability

  • Amazon and Booking.com are generally reliable, with strong customer support and return policies.
  • eBay can be less predictable due to third-party sellers.
  • Local shops offer trust and physical inspection but may lack return flexibility.

Overall, online shopping is convenient and cost-effective, but local shops still matter for urgent purchases and personalized service.

Digital Application from my field (Engineering & Manufacturing)

The significant digital tool of engineering and production supervision is the use of an ERP system. The system can handle all aspects of production, inventory, and purchase order.

Why I Chose ERP

ERP systems are critical in modern manufacturing because they can:

  • Enhance production planning.
  • Minimize stockouts.
  • Track inventory levels.
  • Help manage work orders.
  • Increase transparency.

My User Experience

With the help of ERP, my work process has become structured and efficient, as I can now:

  • Monitor production progress.
  • Identify bottlenecks.
  • Check the availability of materials.
  • Coordinate with other departments, i.e., procurement and quality.

Benefits

  • Better decision-making.
  • Reduced errors.
  • Faster communication.
  • Improved productivity.

Limitations

  • Downtime can affect production.
  • Requires training for new employees.
  • Integrating with old machines can be difficult.

Despite these limitations, ERP systems are the backbone of digital manufacturing.

Digitalization & the Digital Gap

However, digitalization also has some negative aspects, which include a digital divide, i.e., a division between the people who are digitally literate and those who are not.

Who is at Risk?

  • Aged people.
  • Disable people.
  • Low-income families.
  • Rural people.
  • People with low digital literacy.

Challenges they face

  • Problem in accessing basic services.
  • Being dependent on others for digital activities.
  • Being prone to online scams and misinformation.
  • Being deprived of online opportunities.
  • Not being able to use online services.

Digital Competence Test – My Experience

I completed the Digital Competence Test as part of this assignment. I am strong in areas like online communication, information search, and using digital tools at work. However, I can improve in areas like cybersecurity awareness and advanced data management.

Self-Reflection

This assignment helped me understand digital citizenship from a broader perspective. I learned how digital services operate in India, how healthcare is becoming more digital, and how online platforms compare with local shops. The digital competence test showed me areas where I can grow further.

  1. It’s interesting to read about the subject from another country’s perspective! The text raised many similar issues as in Finland. Digitalization helps a lot, especially in rural areas, such as Lapland in Finland. In Finland, the development of internet connections in rural areas has been rapid, so there are fewer obstacles to using digital services than before.
