Final Evaluation Summary

ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALITY IN NURSING

Throughout the internship, I was able to take responsibility for my learning outcome by setting out weekly goals to be achieved. I also do a weekly reflection on my blog which served as a guide for me during the internship.

I was motivated to promote my professional confidence with the help of my mentor nurse who was there at every step of the way to give me the confidence and support needed to achieve my goals. I conducted myself in a professional manner and know my roles and limitations as a student.

An ethical situation that occurred and I was able to learn from was when an elderly resident refused for his blood sample collection, after informing him of the reason and importance, he was still adamant so we had to stop the collection. This was in order to respect his autonomy.

CUSTOMER-ORIENTED APPROACH AND CLINICAL SKILLS

I was able to further develop my interpersonal relationship skills and clinical skills during the internship, I familiarized myself with different wound care equipment and materials used at various stages of the wound healing process.

I also participated in the doctor’s consultations of residents where we prioritize and discuss the various health challenges of residents, I observed and performed physical examinations and collection of samples for investigations.

I performed safe pharmacotherapy by managing medication care process during discussion with the doctor and administration to the residents. I answered residents’ questions as regards new medication where necessary and watched out for any adverse effects of new medication.

COMPETENCE BASED NURSING AND DECISION MAKING

I was able to reflect on my learning outcomes and skills, that is, what went well and where I need to improve upon for example my ergonomic skills. I got more familiar with the pegasos documentation tool and also the domacare where the scheduled needs of the residents are documented. I also documented and gave oral reports more thereby increase my Finnish language proficiency.

QUALITY AND SAFETY IN SOCIAL AND HEALTH CARE SERVICES

Throughout my internship, while carrying out any procedure, I ensured the safety of the residents by adhering to the patient/customer safety guidelines at all stages of the nursing process.
