LEARNING COMPETENCE
I was involved in the planning of my work schedule during my internship which made learning easier and more flexible for me to be able to achieve my goals. From the start of the internship, I informed my mentors the procedures I will like to learn and practice and my method of learning, which is to first observe and then practice.
Also, at the end of every procedure, I ask my mentor nurse for feedback, sometimes, I was given feedback without asking which made me get better at the next opportunity, for instance, after an antibiotic infusion ended, I stopped it and started the next infusion without my mentor’s supervision. On coming back, she let me realize that she has to present at such procedures which I heeded to.
ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM
I ensured I work as ethically as possible by maintaining the privacy of my patients at all times. Patients were also treated with respect and dignity. I reported directly to my mentor nurse when I made I made an error in dispensing a medication which prevented the administration of such medication.
CLINICAL COMPETENCE
During my internship, I was able to assess the care need of patient by using the ABCDE and NEWS approach and act accordingly. For instance, a patient who suddenly developed breathing difficulties, using the ABCDE, my mentor and I were able put the patient in cardiac position in order to make the airway more patent, oxygen therapy was also started immediately at 5l/min to improve breathing and oxygen saturation while the oximeter was placed on her finger to continually monitor her oxygen saturation level, taking her circulation into consideration, her blood pressure was also checked and monitored. through out the ordeal, she was spoken to to ensure response. The ISBAR tool was used by mentor to communicate with the doctor on duty and the patient was later referred to the teaching hospital in Kuopio.
I ensured I work aseptically during medication preparation and administration. Hand hygiene was also observe before and after coming in contact with a patient.
Working ergonomically is an area I need to work more on as I often times just dive into the procedure without first checking the right position.
The BNF was used during my internship to source for information on drugs used in ward to treat or manage various ailments.
HEALTH AND FUNCTIONAL ABILITY PROMOTION
Patients were encouraged to be as self reliant as possible in order to aid their rehabilitation.
GUIDANCE AND TEACHING COMPETENCE
This was somewhat of a challenge for me due to the fact that patients are more fluent in Finnish, nevertheless, I observed my mentor doing the patient’s guidance. I believe I will be able to make up for this in subsequent internships as these will be done in English speaking environments
FINAL EVALUATION:
The practice went well, you are a very kind person and responsible student. You were motivated to learn new things, even though you have knowledge about patient treatment and diseases.
The language barrier made some parts of the practice a bit difficult, but you communicated in English with your mentors and also with some of the patients, who talked English.
LEARNING COMPETENCE
You followed the rules of practice very well, came to work on time and there was no unexplained absences. You asked for feedback and also received the feedback very well. You are motivated to learn new things and enhance the skills you’ve already had.
ETHICAL COMPETENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM
You treated every patient with respect and kindness despite of the background of the patient. You remembered the professional secrecy at all times. Your ethical conscience is good, you told me when you made errors handling the medicines. Always remember that, there is no error that big that you can’t tell anyone. When you keep your conscience clear, it’s much more easier to work as a nurse and treat patients.
CLINICAL COMPETENCE
Your measuring skills are reliable and you know how to measure different values from patients. You know when the values vary of the normal scale and have the courage to tell your mentor about them.
You were handling lot of medicines during this practice, which was one of your main goals and you got to practice that a lot. You put medicines in cups to patient portions, you made iv-antibiotics and gave them, you also gave injections s.c. and i.m. Your aseptic conscience is on point and you executed medicine treatment well. You learned about the most common internal patient medicines from the database also and asked questions of them. You practiced the use of OmniPegasos with your mentors and also practiced reporting in writing and giving report from one patient.
GUIDANCE AND TEACHING COMPETENCE
This was a bit difficult competence to execute, because of the language barrier. We as mentors encouraged you to go and answer patient calls and you brought the information back to us from the patient successfully many times eventhough you didn’t have a mutual language.
On following practices you could concentrate on making the treatment plans and reporting (writing and speech) as your Finnish language skills get better. Also we encourage you to speak Finnish and English with the patients as much as you can.

Dear Damilola,
Taking a critical look through your entire five weeks medical nursing internship, it is evident that you have developed your competencies and improved greatly week by week, gaining and developing new skills and experience that key in your career development. You have been able to put the knowledge and skills learnt in school into good use and this shows in your work. This is a remarkable achievement.
You have taken a keen and active role in your learning process, actively seeking information and putting them into practice, receiving feedback and applying them to improve your work. This demonstrates your desire to learn and is quite commendable, keep this up into your next internship and into the working life.
During this internship, It is clear based on your weekly reflection and our discussion during the mid evaluation, that you have been able to hone your clinical skills, encountered different diseases and understood the approach in taking care of these patients , hone your clinical skills in different interventions such as cannulation, iv fluid and medication administration, improved you assessment skills using ABCDE among others. This is commendable, keep building on the good work.
It is also clear that you have good hand skills, which is a crucial in carrying out care interventions. I am also glad that you have been actively practicing documentation of care using the different systems within the unit. It is evident that you achieved the goals set out for this internship and the goals that you had set out for yourself. Keep up the exceptional work, and the good qualities that you have gained in this internship, and continue to practice more clinical skills that you were not able to carryout during this internship into the next internship. I hope that this internship has helped to focus your clinical nursing approach to care.
