My first week began well with a warm welcome from the staff. I was introduced to staff on duty. My mentor later introduce me to the children (patients) in the ward and also got a brief on the history on the mental condition on some of the patients. I knew that trust was going to be an issue having mind that children are always careful about new things in their environment. I was also aware that for my internship to be successful, I needed create a cordial relationship between myself and the patients (nurse client

My mentor later introduce me to the children in the ward and also got a brief on the history on the mental condition of the patients. I knew that trust was going to be an issue having mind that children are alway careful about new things in their environment. I was also aware that for my internship to be successful, I needed create a cordial relationship between myself and the children (nurse client relationship). I knew from the onset that my greatest challenge in establishing a nurse client relationship was going to be my inability to express myself in the Finnish language. How ever i was very determined to pick some new Finnish words that will aid me during this period of internship.

My mentors discussed that they want me to used the first week to get to know the normal work routine in the and also familiarize my children. They are going give me a patient to work in the coming. We will be discussing the mental health problem of the patient, symptom, mediation and therapeutic measure to aid the patient.

I observed on two occasions two occasion the multi-professional meeting that are held at the hospital to discussed the mental health issues of the children in ward. The only challenge i had in that meeting was the fact that Finnish language was the sole means of communication. However, my mentor explained to me the major decisions that was taken in that meeting. I was told it is in that meeting that the multi-professionals take major decisions as weather to change a medication, continue a medication or even change or maintain any form therapeutic measures to help the children.

The last meeting I observed was between the social worker, nurses and school teachers. This was to review how the children are progressing with regards their academic work at school. This also helps the nurses to know the mental state of the children when they go to school.

I think that the week has been good especially after i have familiarize myself with the normal work routine in the ward. The coming week seem more promising so will take advantage of every learning opportunities to maximize my knowledge in handling mental health issue.
