Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit -Description of Different Digital Tools

I work as a nurse in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, in  Kuopio University hospital. In neonatal intensive care, as in adult intensive care, a lot of technical aids are used to support the work on a daily basis. Welfare technology and digitalisation are part of our everyday life. As a carer, I have had access to a wide range of new devices and have followed the development of digitalisation in the care sector from the front line. Some of the equipment and solutions have contributed to revolutionising the way I have worked in nursing during my career. Through these experiences, I have become interested in wellness technology and digitalisation. I believe that in the future, with the right kind of wellbeing technology solutions, we can continue to create new kinds of care practices.

In the healthcare industry today, digital health tools play a significant role. Various digital tools are created to streamline clinical work, minimize human errors, modernize outdated systems, enhance outcomes, and contribute to overall improvement. We use many digital systems in our daily work in neonatal intensive care. A lot of information from devices goes straight to the patient information system. I record in the patient information system, Clinisoft. I also use some other patient information systems to the treat of patient for example WebLab (requests to the laboratory), Haikara (birth information), Miranda (patient information system of Kuopion University Hospital) and Oberon (check in and out). Titania is a tool for planing shifts and tracking my actual working hours. Planning one’s own shifts is crucial in shift work as it contributes to the well-being of employees. The employees apply/significant own sick leaves, holidays, study leaves, trainings and other leaves to ESS-desk. Furthermore, we use a notification system called Secapp. This platform alerts nurses in our unit when there’s a shortage of staff. We can also make request to KuntaRekry if we don’t have enough staff.

I use digital tools to sharing information at my work, especially Microsoft Office tools. I’m connect with other colleagues by Outlook email and Teams. I’m a member of the different groups in Teams where we communicate by writing or meetings and develop our work. Information of our unit is provided through an electronic information board, by email or in Teams.  I also use Powerpoint while orienting new nurses. Most of trainings are online too. It saves money, time and nature. It’s simple but collaboration isn’t so easy if participants don’t know each other.
