Changes in my life
I am part of that generation who has grown up in this time Marco Annunziata calls Internet Revolution in that one video. I remember those days without mobile phones or every day Internet access. I remember when we had our first computer at home and it was such a big machine and it took so long to connect to the Internet. And if you wanted to watch some television program you needed to be in front of the tv when it was on. Nowadays even (my) kids have their own mobile phones so they can connect to their friends and family and also parents can find out where they are. They use computers and tablets at school and kindergarten every week. In our house we never watch “normal” tv because we can watch our favorite programs in what time we want. We do not need to listen to radio or watch the news on television because we can read them online from our mobile phones. We can access to Internet right away and everywhere and sometimes if the connection is bad we get frustrated. So many things have really changed since I was a kid when talking about digitalisation.
Changes in my work
I work in the Martha Organization that is a Finnish non-profit organization well-known for its dedication to educate the public in matters of home economic. Digitalisation game fast in our work during the COVID 19. Before 2020 we used e-mail, social media, intranet and our web site everyday at work. But now we use all kind of digital tools like TEAMS, ZOOM, our own digital platform called Martta-akatemia and our own martta-application. We have learnt to use so many different digital tools in past two years that I can not even remember all of them. We needed to learn to use all these digital tools to continue working during that time of isolation and I am happy that we did because now when finally we can meet people face to face we still have that option to use for example TEAMS if it is not necessary to be physically in the same place. I think that in the future we will continue using some of these digital tools in everyday work. We can also work more from home what is a really good thing in my point of view. Digitalisation helps us to keep in touch with our colleagues around Finland without travelling so much. Also it gives us a good way to contact more our members who live far away from our offices. And from digitalisation we have got so many new ways to be “martta”.
Feeling secure in digital society
Digital society gives us more options and access to information faster than before. It also helps us to connect people around the world and makes our life easier. There are lot of benefits in my point of view but also lot of risks. Some people, for example elderly find this digital society difficult and sometimes they do not understand all the risks involved and they need help with basic everyday tasks. In my personal life and in work I use so many different digital tools or digital platforms or websites that it is very difficult to remember all the passwords and usernames. Sometimes I found it very annoying that in every program or website or whatever you need to have your own username and password to use them. But I understand that it is the way to keep my or my organisation´s information safe. I am trying my best to do the basics to help me to be secure as James Lyne told in that video. Most of the time I do feel secure about the open digital society because I think I am doing only reasonable things and not giving up too much information about my life. I know that I leave marks in every website I visit so I try to avoid those that do not seem secure. I understand that some day I can make a mistake or misevaluation but I am not thinking about it continuously. I think that this Data Protection reform gives us more secure and keeps our personal details safe. It is a good thing. Even thought that first when it came it made us to do so many small changes at work and some of them made our everyday work more difficult. But now it does not effect much because we don´t need to collect customers personal information or at least we don´t need to save them.
What have I learnt?
It has been interesting to read what other students have written about this topic. So many different ways to write about the same thing. I have learnt many small new things and got more interested about digital society. Videos made me think more about secure in digital society and I also found those videos about future visions fascinating and surprising.
