DIGITAL TOOLS IN MY WORK

I’ve worked in Kainuu Central hospital as an anesthesia nurse in operating room almost thirteen years now. Nowadays I am assistant service supervisor, but I still do clinical work 50 % of my work time. There is a lot of different tools which I use. For example in operating room I use LifeCare, our patient information system. It gives me very important information about my patient. There is for example drug list, allergies, diseases, laboratory results etc. If I don’t see all that information, it could be quite dangerous to take care of my patient. As an anesthesia nurse I must have anesthesia information system. It’s called Antti. Information from LifeCare must be written to Antti, for example diseases. Some informations, for example allergies go to Antti itself. When patient is in ventilator and I observe patients vitals, goes information directly to Antti automatically, so I don’t have to write it. There has been only six years, when we got electronic anesthesia information system. Until then we wrote all information to paper. It took a lot of time and it wasn’t so exact and didn’t get that much information than electronic system.

As an assistant service supervisor I use a lot of “HR desk”, where is information about our employees. For example when I keep orientation discusses, I write all information about it in there. From HR table I also see, if employee is in sick leave or doing lower working time percentage. It helps me to organize employees future shift planning. Also “Titania” is one of the most important tool, because my work is to do shift planning and Titania is tool to plan employees shifts. I think it’s quite difficult to me, because I’ve planned shifts only for 1,5 month now. Hope it’s getting easier the more I use it.

FIVE TOOLS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Todoist. I visited pages and it seemed to be the top-ranked productivity app that brings clarity and efficiency to people. It encourages teams to focus, create and disconnect. There is email, chat and different forums for example. It seems to be helpful tool for different companies to organize different things.

Slack. It seems to be quite similar tool as Todoist. It has also forums, chat, different helpful tool to grow your company. It uses also AI. my mind comes Teams, which we use in my work.

Miro. It’s also visual tool to marketing. It helps teams to plan and build future together, as their website is telling. For example Nike and IKEA is using Miro.

TikTok. It’s familiar application to me, because I have the app in my phone. There were only dance videos, when I loaded it maybe six years ago. Different people around the world danced same dance, how funny! It is also very addictive app. It goes easily hour and you notice that you haven’t done anything else but watching TikTok. Nowadays there is much more than dance videos. There are companies, self-employed persons or singers and bands who advertise themselves. There is food videos and good recipes, Make up tips and lots more. In TikTok website says that TikTok helps to create new jobs, drives revenue for businesses and contributes to the growth of economies around the world. I think that nowadays it can be very good place to advertise your company in TikTok, because there is a lot of young people who watch videos rather than read some advertisements in newspaper for example. If video is interesting, you probably watch it and maybe buy what video is advertising. I have done it one time. It was some face serum and believed all it said. Well, it didn’t worked to my face.

Jodel. “The hyperlocal community, which connects you directly to people around you”, says their website. There you can do same things than in TikTok for example, advertising, telling stories and share videos. They advertises that you can be anonymous. I haven’t loaded Jodel and I think that Instagram, Facebook and TikTok is enough for me in social media. I’ve understood, that there are more younger people than me, so maybe content is not for me.

First three tools were quite same, helping to get your company to make more money, advertising better, helping everybody in company to keep touch easier. I haven’t realize how much different tools to help companies in this world have! How is possible that all of them get clients with advertising same idea? Maybe because I work in social and health services, I don’t understand those things at all. Only Teams and Zoom is all what I use. I can call video calls and share my screen during video call, that’s all I know! Thank God I’m not a manager in company ;). I think that many of them can be use in social and healthcare, Especially in private companies. There is bigger pressure to make many than in public services.

About TikTok and Jodel. I think that those are good place to advertise and give tips and experiences to people, but everything isn’t so nice and safe what comes social media. There is a lot of people who can see your post, somebody can be so sick that can even steal your identity. In Jodel you can bully anonymous and upset people with your words. Bullying is a big problem in social media, I think. It’s a lot easier to speak in some forum than tell things to your face. It’s also very sad that we had read that some young people had died during some TikTok challenge. Social media has a lot of bad sides, but if you use it responsible it can be very entertaining and instructive platform. Our ward is in TikTok and Instagram, and there is funny and instructive videos about our work. I think some people can learn about us, and maybe some young student sees that OR is the place to work in future, because our videos tell a lot of our work.

SELF REFLECTION

It was interesting to see and get known different websites which are helping to advertise for example, and giving tools to increase something bigger in your company. I learned, that lot of those different pages are quite similar, also in social media apps are quite same and same videos are rolling in Instagram and TikTok. You can learn and get help a lot of different tools and from social media, but you have to remember, that AI isn’t giving all the answers, which are true. So remember to doubt. And talk to your human colleagues, tools only help to do your job better, but nothing is better than good conversation with your work mate.

DIGI CITIZEN

KELA

Kela was familiar to me when I was younger and got study grant. I remember, that it was quite difficult to apply for support and it had to be very careful , if you work at the same time and got study grant. Nowadays I pay for student healthcare fee and my children get child benefit. I have European health care card and it’s with me if I go on holidays abroad.

OMAKANTA

OmaKanta is quite known website to me and I check my health information there when I need. There is easy to go, if you have online banking ID or mobile certificate. I use online banking ID. It’s clear site and easy to look for example your diagnosis or laboratory answers.

KEVA

If I retirement age is 68 years old, my pension is less than 3000 €. If it’s 69 years old, it goes about 200 € higher. I think, that my retirement age will go over 70 years. It feels like every year it gets higher and higher. System didn’t want to tell me how much I get if age was 63 years, because Lowes retirement age for me is 67 years old.

ONLINE SHOPPING

I’m not very active e-shopper, but sometimes I shop clothes or shoes from Zalando. There is sometimes good sales and returning or changing different sizes is very easy. Personally I hate to go shopping and match clothes in different stores. I get hot, my hair goes electrified and nothing fits me anyway, Rather I shop online and try clothes on in my home. For example I ordered to my daughter same dress in two colors and two different sizes and returned three of them. Also order is easy to deliver and I can pay it with Klarna check. I almost never pay my online shopping directly, because if I have to return them, is payment much easier later. I’m quite discerning shopper and I always compare prices between different shops. I think Zalando has very competitive prices. Service is reliable and custom service is easy, so I think it’s very safe to shop site like that. Also points to application, it’s easy to use :).

Online shopping is very popular way to shop and there is so much different choices for everybody. It’s so easy, that you can stay home and order almost everything to you home. Even food and some medicine are in online, so if you only want to stay home and go nowhere, even work from home, it’s possible and you can isolate oneself in peace. Quite scary, isn’t it?

APPLICATION FROM SOCIAL- AND HEALTH CARE

I chose Mehiläinen- application from my own field, because my occupational health care is in Mehiläinen. Mehiläinen is private provider of social- and health cervices. It operates also few countries in Europe. I haven’t use application so much, only when I make an appointment to vaccination for example. Logging in is easy. I remember that for the first time I opened app I had to identify, but now facial recognition is all I have to do to get in to app. In the front page you can choose if you need occupational health care, digi clinic or make an appointment. You can also check there your prescriptions and documents for example. But if you have been a patient in public healthcare, you can’t see for example your prescriptions in Mehiläinen app.

Good thing about app is, it’s very easy to be in contact with your occupational health nurse using app. Answer comes quite fast, in 1-2 days. If you need sick leave, you can use digi clinic. My opinion is it has made too easy to get sick leave without even talk to anyone and unfortunately some people use that opportunity too easy.

There also sees if some examination belongs to occupational health care or not. Also if you are regular customer and pay everything yourself, you can see price estimate in app, so there is not big surprises coming if you see a doctor. I searched how easy there was to change language to the app. I found it, but I had too look it for a while.

RISKS AND CHALLENGES IN DIGITALIZATION

There is a lot of people who don’t have skills to use digital services and that is what worries me the most in social and healthcare. I’m talking about elder people or disabled for example. They are in risk of being left without health services because they maybe haven’t knowledge to use computer. Almost everywhere you call, is phone machine answering to you and tells you to dial different numbers. That’s sometimes difficult to me, who you a lot of digital tools daily.

Government is planning to digitize domiciliary care services and that scares me. I understand that it is cheaper, but you can’t take care of elder people via computer. They people need a human to visit, not human behind the screen.

I remember my grandmother when she was about 80 years old and got her first and last mobile phone, Doro. She got angry because she didn’t even wanted it. She never understood how to use it. My close person has problems with her memory now, and I see how passwords and understanding of different digital devices is getting harder.

MY DIGITAL COMPETENCE TEST RESULTS

My top 3 highest score was in identity management, law and self-service. For example I understand what might happen if I share personal information on the web. I also feel sure about what is legal or illegal write or share about others. About self service I know how to make address changes and make a dentist appointment for example. I learned that my digital skills are quite basic.

SELF-REFLECTION

I work in social and healthcare, so my thoughts about digitalization is easily in that area. Of course there is a lot more risks and challenges. One challenge is banks and their services. Almost everything is digitalized and you can’t have bank service from human that easily than used to be. My mind comes again older people, who wants to withdraw money from bank and pay their grocery with cash. Also I don’t know how is possible nowadays to pay your bills if you don’t have mobile bank. Information security issues and cyber attacks come to my mind also as a risk and challenge of digitalization.

I think, that there is more good things than bad things about digitalization. It is so much easier to take care many things nowadays, for example this school. I can work and study at the same time, because I don’t have to be physically in school. I can pay my bills in online bank and I can book a trip without going travel agency. That’s only few examples, how digitalization helps me vs digitalization in 90’s, when I was a child.

DIGI SOCIETY

Digitalization in operating room

I’m anesthesia nurse in Kainuu central hospital and been working there almost 13 years. Anesthesia hasn’t changed, we take care our patient in the same way as 10 years ago, but things have changed quite a lot when we talk about digitalization. When I started working, we wrote anesthesia document in paper and we were very last hospitals who got electronic anesthesia record system. It’s much easier to nurse, because all data from ventilator goes directly to “Antti” (that’s our electronic systems name). Writing took a lot of time, and everyone handwriting was not so clear (read anesthesiologist), so for example if they wrote regulation, sometimes it was hard to read and risk to give wrong medication or dose was much bigger than now.

Over all I think, it’s very good that we have different digitalization in our work, but there is a lot of different programs that we have to use when we treat a patient. For example in operating room we use “Opera”, our surgery information system, then we have to do “Rafaela” for every patient. It is patient classification system. We have to fill how hard or easy our patient is to take care of. Also we fill the patient record system for example bacterial culture for laboratory. So it takes a lot of time to treat computer nowadays. Digitalization is going forward and I’m sure, that we’ll get more different programs in future that we have to take care on instead of patient.

    Risks of open digital society

I think it’s good thing, that there is data protection reform to help citizen and also give tools and orders to different companies. For example health care system could be much easier if patients information can be moved to another heart care system. Also I think that it is very stupid that we have different systems in our country. I could be much easier that we had only one, because if you get sick and you are not in your home city, your patient record maybe don’t see in another hospital, if you haven’t get permission about it. Kanta service is not the easiest system when we want to see patient information.

There is many risk of digitalization system. We have seen that patient record can be stolen and been published on line. Also I read cyber attack from medical magazine from 2016. There said, that everyday there is a lot of attacks. Good thing is, that in Finland we are prepared to those attacks and system can recognized and stop them. Risks are big in open digital society. But do we want to go back time any more, because digital society also gives us so much?

    Questions to chat GPT

I asked, what operating room looks like. Most of it was right, but one thing about staff was wrong. There said, that everyone dress sterile outfit. That is wrong. Only surgeon, instrument nurse and assistant are sterile. Other people in the room are not. It also said that anesthesiologist is head of the patient. It was insult for anesthesia nurse, because we are there also :).

My second question was, what monitoring methods there is to keep patient in sleep during surgery. Answers were like I assumed. For example there is BIS-monitor, which gives direct estimate of consciousness level. Also we monitor vital signs of the patient; heartbeat, blood pressure, anesthesia gas level and oxygen level. Also we can feel if patient is sweating for example. So there is no only one thing to see if patient is in enough deep anesthesia.

All though, I think artificial intelligent can be good help, but you can’t trust that completely. I use chat GPT for example to tell a good marinade to meat, or to tell which cities in Thailand is good to travel if you want peace and quiet and also life and people. That is how much I trust in artificial intelligent.

    Self evaluation

I haven’t focused on digital society much in my thoughts, it just came along with me and I use tools what I have given in my work and home. When I think it more, it may be little bit scary also. Is there somebody watching in my laptop camera? Is there somebody takin information in our house, because robot vacuum cleaner is writing a map when it cleans? It also can take pictures. If I start think those things too much, I probably will come crazy, so is better that I don’t think those things too much.
