Digital work life.

When we started care work we wrote reports by hand. Patients had personal files in which we recounted the happenings of our shift. These files contained the patient’s information and additional information obtained through the phone. Information was largely transferred through paper and pen.

The earliest technological advancements were seen when computers began to replace paper. This surfaced in bigger organizations. Digital development was fairly slow in the private sector and still is to this day in comparison to big operations.

In these corporations the shift to digitalization was swift and required constant learning from the employees. Apps were developed, updated and expanded at a constant rate.

Data privacy became a relevant matter that required training from the personnel.

This created tension in the nurse community. People feared that technological development would increase work hours and some found the idea of digilation daunting.

Future development

Digital advancement has many possibilities in the field of care work. Technological softwares are constantly improving and their usage is increasing. They increase care’s security and availability. Potential for digital innovations are limitless even in care work.

The latest digital addition in my own organization was the inclusion of remote contact in relation to care work. Remote contact is fairly familiar for many through meetings, education and liaisons. In care work remote contact is still rather new. However, in the last two years Corona has increased the advancement of remote work.

Telehealth is still a researched field. Nevertheless, it’s usage in care work within a patient’s home is minor. Research like Telehealth gives hope to the nurses that digital solutions back care work rather than inconveniences it. It can offer faster and better care for patients.

Digital global risks and security

Digital development is not without risk. However, there are concerns about data and personal privacy. Andy Yen discussed a possible future where the youth do not even know the concept of privacy. The thought that privacy would completely disappear is frightening and should not be condoned. People like Andy Yen and James Lynen who lecture about data security bring up a serious problem that we should not turn a blind eye to. Everyone has the right to their own privacy and that right should not be violated without justifiable reason. This is important to keep in mind in work and personal life.

Luckily the European Union has done their part in defining policies for personal security in the digital environments. Companies operating within the EU are required by law to secure data privacy even if the organizations are located outside of Europe. With the help of General Data Protection Regulation an individual can manage their own information and demand control over them if necessary. Companies also benefit from this equal injunction that guarantees rights to accessibility and viewability of data.

Digital development has been rapid in the social and health sector. However, data transfer has not yet been overly successful in that regard even if the possibilities are there. I have familiarized myself with digital healthcare over the last two years. The biggest problems so far seem to be data privacy and performance of the applications. Modern smartphones are not yet able to run heavy software required in the field of healthcare which is why transferring medical procedures in real-time is both difficult and slow.

This is a problem I hope will be solved in the future. The necessary connections are already available. It comes down to will and dedication to begin commissioning this technology.

The increase of digitalization and remote contact has shown a decrease in social interaction skills. Corona has especially forced people to work remotely.

Education should never be entirely remote. People need social interactions to learn the ways of life. Gestures and expressions required for socializing are something we learn through interactions with others. Human encounter skills can only develop with the help of other people. I can not imagine that even the best virtually transmitted education can ever replace that. Furthermore, not everyone is able to achieve maximum efficiency in remote learning. Some need additional support.

However, digital softwares is beneficials as one form of education. It brings alternative and new ways to learn and teach. Virtual platforms offer limitless potentiality for new knowledge in a way that was not possible in the past.

Self-evaluation

This assignment helped me to develop a clearer image of the digital world. Even though it offers countless possibilities through the development of big data, the internet and new applications, it also comes with ethical responsibilities and personal boundaries. Digital development does not give us the permission to do whatever we want. No technical or digital application should be allowed to take away the necessary humane interaction skills.

Digitalization presents an alternative for the availability of health care. The possibility for equal health care regardless of one’s residence is still a long way out. However, I believe we can make it there. We as the users have to be unprejudiced and willing to develop with the digital world.
