My Experiences and Thoughts on Digitalization
In my work in substance abuse rehabilitation, I have practical experience with digitalization. I use electronic client information systems for documentation and communication with others, and digital tools are part of my daily work. Digitalization has made work easier and more efficient.
However, there are big challenges. Some of the clients don’t have access to digital services and tools. Some of them don’t have a phone, internet connection, or even the basic digital skills to use these services. This is very common among people in vulnerable situations, such as those in substance abuse rehabilitation or the elderly. This is why digitalization can increase the digital gap and may exclude some clients from some services.
In the future, digitalization can and will offer new opportunities. Online services, mobile apps, and AI chat support could make it easier to get help and get in touch with professionals. However, it is important to remember that traditional face-to-face services must remain available, so that no one is left behind.
Digitalization will continue to change everyday life by making services faster and more accessible to everyone, but at the same time, it may increase social inequality if everyone is not taken into account, ie, the elderly, those who are not able to have daily access to smart devices etc.
In the work environment, digitalization will increase the use of remote services and require better digital skills from employees. While work may become more efficient, it may also become more demanding. We must remember that we cannot just bring in new services without training everyone to the new systems. These systems and devices must also talk to one another, so that we won’t have to learn dozens of new services just for one client.
The Impact of GDPR on My Life
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has affected my life in both positive and negative ways, especially in my work.
On the positive side, GDPR has improved the protection of sensitive and personal data. At my job, I handle very confidential client information, and GDPR ensures that this information is managed carefully and securely. It has also increased trust between clients and professionals. In addition, I have become more aware of data protection and privacy, both at work and in my personal life.
On the negative side, GDPR has made daily work more complex. It requires more time for documentation and careful handling of information. There are also strict rules about sharing information, which can sometimes make cooperation between professionals more difficult. In some situations, GDPR can feel complicated and increase administrative work.
Overall, GDPR has brought important improvements in data protection, but it has also added new challenges to everyday work.
We remember the data breach that happened just a few years ago in Finland, where confidential data was leaked from the health services to the public. We must ensure that this never happens again, so that the people who come to us in their time of need and at their most vulnerable moments don’t lose faith in us.
Chat GPT
I asked Chat GPT about my work in substance abuse rehabilitation. The answers were mostly correct but quite general and vague. They did not fully understand the individualistic needs in my line of work. For example, the importance of one on one meetings and long-term support could have been explained more deeply and thoroughly. The answers also lacked practical examples from real work situations.
Benefits of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence can provide quick information and support learning. It can help professionals generate ideas and improve their work. It is also easily accessible and easy to use.
Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence
AI often provides very general answers and may lack practical understanding. It cannot replace human interaction, which is essential in social work. There is also a risk that the information may be incomplete or not fully accurate. It is very important that anyone who uses it will still think critically about the answers it provides us and that we have oversight on what AI can provide us.
My Opinion on Artificial Intelligence
In my opinion, artificial intelligence is a very good tool, especially for learning and supporting work. For example, in my own work, I have noticed that AI can provide quick ideas for therapeutic discussion groups or ways to support clients, which helps me plan my work more efficiently. However, AI cannot replace human interaction, empathy, or professional judgment. In social work, human contact is always essential due to the fact that humans need other humans to survive through lifes ups and downs.
This is why on AI-tools, we must have good oversight and not trust everything blindly. Critical thinking and fully comprehending every individuals need is the most important thing and we cannot forget that.
Self-assessment
I learned a lot from this assignment. I was not clear on what exactly was GDPR, but I had the general idea of what it was and how it effected my work. Digitalization has made my work easier, but also with some tools and platforms which don’t communicate well with each other, it can make work sometimes frustrating.
I use a lot of AI-tools to generate ideas and topics with my clients, since it is a much quicker way to assess information from the internet compared to using Google or other search engines. However, it is very clear that we cannot trust these AI-tools blindly and must use critical thinking to filter out information and misinformation.
Hopefully someday we can have a society where we can all use the advantages of a digital society without leaving anybody in a digital gap, without forgetting the importance of face-to-face services.
