DIGI SOCIETY

I´m born in 1997, so digital tools has always been “a normal” part of my life. I know what it is to live without mobile devices, but in my life, the devices have always been there. I have always loved everything about digitalisation. In my opinion it makes life easier. Most importantly, saves our time.

Digitalisation in my work

I work in the child protection services. In my daily work I use many different digital tools. Nappula is the application we use to document children´s everyday life. All the administrative tasks we do trough Nappula. As much as we use Nappula, do we work with Microsoft-tools. We use Outlook, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Word, OneDrive, Lens and Teams. Ortec and Workday are apps we use for rota planning and checking employee data. Nappula, Ortec and Workday was totally new for me, when I started to work in our company, but Microsoft´s tools, where all familiar to me.

In future, I hope many of the processes are much more digitalised. For example, now we transfer signed papers every day into a digital form. It would save much time, if the signing could be done electronically. In my work, also Artificial Intelligence (AI) would have a lot work. Now the kids bring us receipts about what they have bought, we check the amount, scan the receipt, and manually transfer the money back to them. AI could do all the work for us, when it sees with one overview what to do.

Future

I see, that digitalisation will change life and work dramatically. Many processes will be automatized. I hope it will save time from work, and give people more time off. New professions will appear, and old ones will disappear.

Security

Nowadays people seem to share everything on social media. People have public sites on social media, so everybody can see what they publish. Digital footprint is something is something that is too rare spoken about. For example youths may not think about the chance, that their possible future employee may find their improper posts, and it can risk their career. People doesn’t care so much about their privacy, or think about the consequences whit being on social media. People accept different cookies on websites, without reading the terms. There is so many risks about the open digital society that people doesn’t know, or doesn’t care about.

I’m glad that General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in 2018. Shortly, GDPR requires organisations and companies to handle personal data more safely than before. I don’t have any memories of that time, so I can’t directly tell, how it effected on me. I can remember, that apps and websites started to ask me to read and accept some terms more often. I see that GDPR has affected on me only in a positive way, even if the up popping “accept terms” is sometimes annoying. As GDPR is valid, organisations and companies are forced to collect as little personal data as possible, and that makes me feel more safe in my personal life. In my work, we need to be even more aware of how we use personal data. In my everyday work, I don’t see the effects of GDPR.

Self evaluation

As I earlier wrote, the digital word has always been a very normal part of my life. I´m the kind of a person who starts to use the newest digital tools as the first person in my inner circle. I’m very exiting about new mobile applications. I’m very interested in using applications to support my healthy lifestyle. I like to encourage other people to use new technology and often help them with the use. I often know the basic things about digital solutions and learn quick how to use them. I’v been writing a blog as a child, so the basics of building a site was familiar, but WordPress was totally new for me before this course, so now can I say that I’m somehow able to use it. During the assignment, I realized that information security is something I really should and would like to know more about. I do understand the importance, but would like to understand how to be as secure as possible. I feel like a understand it as a private person as deep as I need to, but I would like to understand it on a professional level.

  1. Hi Petra,

And thank you for your blog!

It was interesting to read, what kind of digital applications you use at your work. You wrote about the process dealing with the children/youth bringing their receipts to get money from you. It sure sounds like a really complicated process, which could be helped and fastened by using the AI!

As you wrote, many people are sharing very personal data in the social media and internet. I’m concerned of this as well, and in my opinion, especially the youth are in a high risk. It seams that people don’t understand, how realistic the risks are, and like you said, they are just clicking “accept all cookies” without really understanding what it means.

I also had very similar thoughts with you about the security issues. I would like to learn more about it too, because the threats are real and we, as professionals, should be able to understand them.

  2. Hello Petra,

I agree that you wrote about eBay as well. When I was younger, I used to order a lot of phone cases from eBay because of the low prices. Nowadays, I prefer to order phone accessories from Finnish companies, even if they are more expensive. I don’t use eBay much these days unless the product is being shipped by Europe. I trust more European sellers.
