Kela, Omakanta, Keva

Kela provides social security coverage for Finnish residents. Different forms of social security are family benefits, health insurance, rehabilitation, basic unemployment security, basic social assistance, housing benefits, financial aid for students, disability benefits and basic pensions. Dealing with KELA is very rare for me, because even when I was a student, I was not entitled to any financial aid (all working in Finland is punishable).

Omakanta provides your own health records and prescriptions. It is also possible to renew prescriptions through this service. You can also print corona vaccination certificate from Omakanta. Accessing to Omakanta is easy, but it requires strong authentication.

KEVA is a service intended for public sector employees, so I need to check my pension information on the Työeläke.fi service (Varma). The earliest retirement age for me was 67 years and 7 months and the highest retirement age was 70 years. These extra two and half years will increase the pension amount by 17 percent.

Digital shops

The most common thing I order in online shop is car parts. I have noticed, that you can save more than half, if you just bothered to search a bit. I tried to favor local services as much I can, but if the price difference is significant, it is easy to lean towards the cheaper side. Duel is usually between Motonet and Autodoc. All the services I have used have proven to be reliable. If the service seems to be shady, even a little, I don’t use it.

Service from my own field: patevyyspalvelu.fi

This is FISEs certification service, where anyone can search for people with various design qualifications. Designers can also apply for new certifications, if all the requirements are fulfilled (sufficient education and work experience).

Digitalization and digital gap

There are some people who have never used a computer, but these people are invariably old. The further we go in time, the number of these people will decrease towards zero. Today, children are exposed to various digital devices at a very young age, and it goes without saying that such young people are more ready for the digitalization of working life than older people who did not have digital devices in their youth. Even I feel that I don’t master everything new as gracefully as people younger than me, so there will be always some gaps in the digital skills of people and you just have to accept that.

Digital Competence Test

self-reflection

Most things of this part of course was quite familiar to me and I think my digi-citizen skills are pretty good.  Fellow students had found interesting point of view to things, that I haven’t been able to think of.

I commented these blogs:

Hi Tommi! And thank’s for your blog. You had the same point of views about the gabs and online shopping as me. I think the older people are not able to keep up with the digitalization as we younger folks are. But as you said, time will take care of this phenomenon. As the online shopping, I also think it’s one’s own responsibility to check where you do your shopping. I haven’t had any problems with security when you just do the sites back ground research well enough.

Thanks for the text. While reading, I kept thinking about what disadvantages digitalization has or can have. You brought up the good side of things, but can it also be bad?

This article on the digital gap makes the excellent point that older individuals are more likely than younger people to have never used a computer. Despite the fact that some young people in my experience and in my country lack access to computers. To make sure that everyone can utilize digital services, the government must take appropriate measure and action.

    Hi Tommi,

Thank you for a good writing. You wrote about the change of digilization turing the time. When I was kid in the beginning of 90´s only a few people in my neighborhood had internet. I got my first mobile phone when I was 15 years old. Developing in technology is happening all time time, but how much can we develope the systems? We also have to remeber that Digital services are made to serve us, support security, improve up-to-date information and act as support for better communication. We should raise people´s awareness of digital environments and its opportunities and risks.
