DIGITAL APPLICATIONS IN MY WORK TODAY
In my work as an early childhood education teacher, I use traditional Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Teams, Word, etc. Among other digital applications, I have used various shift-planning systems such as Titania. For communication with guardians, WhatsApp has been used, but due to data protection concerns we have transitioned to using the Signal messaging application, which is considered more secure in terms of privacy protection. In my pedagogical work, I have also used social media channels such as YouTube.
One positive aspect of using social media in early childhood education is that it enables easy communication with guardians and others interested in the activities. Information and announcements can be shared easily, and it also helps create a sense of community. One of the biggest challenges in the use of social media is definitely issues related to data protection. Children’s privacy is of utmost importance.
5 APPLICATIONS AND HOW I COULD USE THEM IN MY WORK
Instagram can be used in early childhood education in several different ways. It can be used to follow other early childhood education accounts in order to get activity ideas and other field-related information. In addition, many daycare centers have their own Instagram pages where they share photos and material related to their activities. This makes the daycare center’s activities more visible to children’s guardians and also works as a kind of “business card” for parents who are considering which daycare center would be the most suitable for their child.
When using Instagram and creating content there, it is important to remember children’s privacy and data protection. Identifiable pictures of children must not be shared without guardians’ consent, and agreed practices must always be followed.
LinkedIn could be used for professional networking among early childhood education professionals. There, one can follow other experts in the field and network with them, participate in discussions, and find events and training opportunities related to the field. In addition, LinkedIn can be a useful tool when exploring new job opportunities. It highlights one’s work experience and skills to potential employers. On the downside, it may also increase comparison with others and create pressure regarding one’s own work.
TODOIST
Todoist helps with organizing everyday tasks. It can be used, for example, for making reminder lists, weekly plans, and dividing responsibilities among team members. In the daily life of a daycare center, there are often many different projects happening simultaneously, which is why Todoist could serve as a good tool for managing them all at the same time. It could also reduce workload, clarify the division of tasks, and help with remembering important things.
Pinterest can be used to search for different craft ideas related to seasons or other themes. It also contains ideas for pedagogical materials, such as activities for visual perception, counting, play, or motor skills. This saves planning time and inspires trying new things. Ideas can be saved into personal folders, making them easy to access and use in one’s own work.
CHATGPT
ChatGPT can serve as a useful brainstorming tool in the everyday life and pedagogical planning of early childhood education. It speeds up planning and provides alternative ideas and approaches. For example, ChatGPT could be asked to come up with games or exercises suitable for a specific theme. However, it is important to remember that artificial intelligence can also make mistakes, and children’s personal information must never be entered into it. Pedagogical assessment is always the responsibility of a professional – it cannot be outsourced to AI.
SELF-ASSESSMENT
While completing this assignment, I became familiar with completely new applications and online services. There is a wide variety of different applications available. I understand that digital tools can be utilized in many different ways in early childhood education work, for example in planning, documentation, and communication.
Successful use of digital applications requires ease of use, purposeful implementation, data protection and privacy, as well as pedagogical benefit. I want to further develop my digital skills and learn to use new tools in a versatile but responsible way in my work.
I also learned that digitalization is part of everyday life in early childhood education, but it does not replace genuine presence and interaction or children’s mutual play.
