DIGI SOCIETY

Digitalization in My Work Experiences, Opportunities, and Challenges

In my work as a service supervisor and social counselor in a care home for the elderly, my daily life revolves heavily around human connection, empathy, and well-being. Work that was previously largely based on face-to-face interaction and manual processes is now increasingly tied to digital tools, systems, and remote connections. Technology has become an inseparable part of our daily work.

My experiences with digitalization so far have been a combination of improved efficiency and learning new things. We have transitioned from paper-based recordings to electronic client data systems and digital care plans. Although adopting these new systems took time, they have ultimately speeded up information retrieval and reduced human errors, making the daily lives of our residents safer.

Future Ideas and Development Areas

In the future, digitalization could be developed to be more customer-oriented. This would include, among other things, more user-friendly services for the elderly and vulnerable groups, better integration of digital and face-to-face services, the use of artificial intelligence in routine tasks to free up time for human interaction, and combining nature-based and well-being services with digital solutions.

In the future, digitalization will also radically transform both life and work with the elderly. My own ideas for the future focus on preventative and assistive technology that does not replace humans, but rather supports our work.

Predictive AI and Wearable Technology: Smart sensors and wrist-worn devices can monitor residents’ vital signs and movement. They can predict, for example, fall risks or sudden illness episodes even before they happen.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Robotics: VR glasses can offer lonely residents cognitive stimulation and the opportunity to travel the world right from their armchairs. Logistics robots, on the other hand, can handle heavy lifting and linen transport, leaving us employees with more time for genuine interaction and emotional support.
